    Summary

Aldo rolls his eyes, annoyance genuine this time. “Oh, for God’s sakes. The worst thing we ever did was teach children they have rights.”

“You don’t mean that,” Thomas says patiently.

“I do,” Aldo insists darkly. “Freedom of expression does not mean you have the right to scrawl ‘skibidi toilet’ all over the third floor bathroom.”

    *******

The ancient and venerable St Peter's School for Boys elects a surprise new headmaster, and Aldo reaches heights of stress headache never before experienced by mortal man.

God, Aldo loves him. The aftermath of this is going to rival the Book of Revelations.

“ I won’t work for him, Thomas,” Aldo said through gritted teeth. “And I won’t let him ruin this school.”

    “So you would rather lie.”

Aldo just looked at him, willing Thomas to understand. But Thomas had shaken his head.

“I never thought you would lack the courage to do the right thing, Aldo,” he said. He left without a backwards glance.

And after all, it had been for nothing. Tedesco had disgusted everyone with his tirade after the news of the Hull attack came through, and Benitez had charmed the birds from the trees with his earnest, spontaneous address. Even Aldo had been taken in: the way he spoke about education as a transformative force for justice, education as a tool for making peace in a world so divided…it was everything Aldo loved about his job. He had turned to try to catch Thomas’ eye - but he couldn’t, because Thomas was turned towards Benitez like a sunflower to the sun.
