Work Text:
Dear Calypso,
Kyoko doesn't know what possessed her that night to decide to suddenly start writing a letter to her sister.
She bites her lip.
Calypso used to be her biggest role model when they were still close. She looks fondly back on those memories— days of laughter and the lingering image of her sister being by her side. Hah… she never really knew how much she would come to cherish those moments until the person she used to share them with disappeared.
It was quiet. There wasn't any fuss. Just one day, Calypso decided to go on another adventure, and never returned.
She never did tell Kyoko where she was going.
"I wonder if Calypso did ever get sick of me…" the pen she's holding barely grazes the paper, tracing over the space between the lines. Kyoko wouldn't blame her for doing so.
Even if it's just for my own sake, all I hope is you'll come home one day.
Is she selfish for wanting that? What would she even say if Calypso did come home?
…Kyoko can imagine herself being surprised—maybe even a little angry— and then breathing a sigh of relief knowing that her sister was still there.
"I missed you!" Calypso would say, "Have you been doing okay? How's life been?"
They would talk, play games, eat dinner together… everything would return to normal as it was before her adventure.
…Well, now that she thinks about it, it would be horribly selfish and unrealistic for her to wish for that. What if her sister doesn't want to come home? If she's mad at Kyoko over something, or she comes home not fully there, not fully right— her idealistic view of her sister wouldn't hold up then. Still, it doesn't stop her from wishing. Wanting her sister back.
A sigh. The pen scribbles across the paper as the ink flows out, writing out simple words too shallow to express how Kyoko feels in the moment. A good adventurer never lets their emotions cloud their thoughts.
Since you've been on your journey, I've decided to become an adventurer, just like you!
And yet everything she's done up to this point almost feels pointless.
I've even made a brand new friend…
Kyoko is reminded of the hero. Jon was their name, from what she could catch?
To have that level of sheer willpower and dedication to their mission… if Kyoko had even a quarter of that, she bets she'd be able to find her sister in no time.
Sometimes she feels like she worries for their health like Calypso used to do for her. It brings back memories, the faint, nostalgic sense lingering behind. And just like Calypso, they're steadfast… maybe even a bit reckless, if she thinks about it. She sees a bit of her sister in every interaction they have. How lucky she is, to have a friend like that…
…I was scared at first, but talking with them made me happy… really happy.
Even if the first few situations they've talked in were… admittedly not the best, just being seen is enough to make her smile.
Mmm… adventurers have to look out for each other, after all.
She remembers the second conversation they had back at the manor— she did hand them a bottle of some juice she picked up earlier, and Jon took a little bit to finish it.
Better now to makes some small talk, Kyoko remembers thinking.
Turns out they went to Blackrock Kingdom first to get the Ice Dagger. Roadtown, although snowy, was nice to sit in and enjoy the environment. At least they weren't sweating to hell and back chasing people like they were in the Rugged Rainforest. There was also this cool ice cream shop somewhere in the castle area… albeit it might not be the most accessible. That was the only time they got to try out a banana split.
For a moment, she was happy.
…They convinced me that I can't give up.
If someone like Jon could shoulder the burden of three swords in such a short period of time, then she couldn't give up on finding her sister.
It gave her hope that she might actually one day achieve her goal.
So, she's not going to let up until she finds her sister and finds out why she never came back home. That's her ultimate goal. It wouldn't be fair to give up on that just because Kyoko thinks she's not capable.
It hurts to think about Calypso now, but…
I've learned so much from you, I just hope there's still time to prove it.
She has to never lose sight of what she's doing all this for.
Kyoko's hand shakes as she's holding onto the pen. Once she finds her sister, she's going to show her all the new things she can do. Can fate at least let her do that?
Calypso has to be out there somewhere. She knows this— her sister isn't one to walk away from a challenge without winning. Calypso has to be okay.
A deep breath. She's doing all this for her sister, and everything she's done for Kyoko up to this point. Calypso looked out for her when she was young— now it's time to pay the favor back.
I promise we'll see each other again.
-Kyoko.
She gently puts down the pen.
There is an old rumor Kyoko used to hear about. If—at around midnight, when the moon was out—one were to wish under the stars and send a message through a bottle, then the ocean and sky would make sure to deliver it to the recipient.
Of course, it's probably not true… but it couldn't hurt to try, given how it's late at night already.
The waves lap at the land as Kyoko walks up to the dock holding a note in a bottle. It's a comfortable enough cold outside. The moon and the stars shimmer in their reflection on the water.
Haha… she feels silly doing this.
"…If… there's just the slightest chance," Kyoko starts, bending down to place her bottle in the water, "…could you please deliver this letter to my sister?"
It's not silly to hope, though. She's sure of that.
