The Lion sounds terribly sad when he turns to Peter and asks, as soft as a lion can manage, “Son of Adam, are you certain?”
Peter isn’t.
Peter is more unsure and afraid and sick to his stomach than he has ever been in his life, including when Dad left, including the air raids, including yesterday afternoon when he pushed the Wolf off his chest with shaking, blood-slicked hands.
But he nods anyway, because it’s for his brother. Because it’s Peter’s job to look out for him—for all of them. And he will. He is.
