Bit by bit, I come to hate it (like it)

Summary:

"I'll be helping out Recovery Girl, from now on. And you're about to be my patient!" he chirped before he gave a soft kiss to Shinso's hand.

'Oh no.' was the first genuine thought from Shinso.
He could already see Monoma become one of those nurses in horror movies, with the blood stained uniform and the crazy eyes.

Notes:

This was out way sooner than expected, though I don't know what to think about it.

Please, tell me if you see any mistakes with grammar or if you see any typos!

The title is from 'As you like it' by Eve.

Work Text:

The bell indicating the start of lunch period rang, cutting off Vlad king as the lesson wrapped up.
Chatter filled the room as the students gathered their things to head for lunch, after their teacher had dismissed them.

The hero looked down at the assignments he was going to have to grade in the afternoon, sighing as he skimmed Tetsutetsu's work.
As his eyes quickly took in the multitude of mistakes he could already detect, he didn't notice that there was a student still lingering in front of his desk.

"Kan-sensei?" the teen finally spoke up, and the teacher looked up to find Monoma standing in front of the desk, waiting for attention.

He put the paper down, and addressed him:
"Monoma? What can I help you with?"

"Recently, I've been thinking that I managed to get a satisfying level of control on all of my classmates' quirks." He begun, his voice calm and steady.
It was true, Kan nodded, Monoma had shown great skill with all the abilities shown in the class.

"And I think I'm ready to try another."
He stopped for a moment, possibly trying to get an idea of Kan's thoughts on the matter, if the teen's scrutinizing gaze was anything to go by.
"Since it's a rare kind of quirk, and I have it in reach here at UA, I'd like to use Recovery Girl's [Heal]." he explained after a moment.

Kan considered this, and upon finding no reason to not let Monoma try, he agreed.

"I don't see why not. I'm sure she will appreciate the extra help." Kan smiled, proud of how intraprendent his student was.
"I'll make sure to mention it to both Recovery Girl and Nezu."
After a moment of pondering, he added:
"Ask her to teach you basic field medicine, too. It's in the curriculum for the next year, but it wouldn't hurt to get ahead."

The boy nodded at him with a pleased smile, glad that his request was met with acceptance.

"Go have lunch now!" Kan dismissed his student as he went back to the papers, he was dreading having to grade Tsuburaba's, too.

The blond gave a brief bow in thanks, "Thank you, sensei."
He then turned around and caught up with Tokage and Kuroiro, who were waiting for him out of the classroom's door.

The afternoon sun was shining over a beat up Hitoshi's eyes, his purple hair falling over his eyes as he panted at the exertion.

He was glad that Aizawa had decided to train him, he really was, but fuck, did he ache every time.

His mentor looked at the time, and then took a look at his apprentice.
After a shrug, he turned his gaze down and addressed the student in front of him.
"It's enough for today, you're dismissed. Go to Recovery Girl's for a check-up."

Hitoshi nodded his head and stood up from where he had been kneeling on the floor.
He entered the main building and then made his way over to the infirmary.

He opened the white door, and while he was expecting to find the elderly woman alone, he was met with the sight of the hero talking with another student.

It didn't take much for Shinso to recognize him: he'd made quite the impression at the sports festival, Shinso was honestly surprised that someone could be as reckless as to taunt someone like Bakugo.
He quickly recognized the blond Hero course student as Monoma, from class B.

It didn't take long for the two to turn their attention to him.
"Hello, Shinso. What brings you here?"
The other teen hummed in wonder, then taking in his beat-up appearance, and walking towards him.

"Training." Was the curt answer.
Hitoshi couldn't elaborate further before the shorter took his hand, and gently led him to sit on the infirmary bed.

"What are you doing?"
The purple haired boy asked, a bit taken aback by the action.

Monoma never let go of his hand, and once he'd been sat down, he brought it closer to his mouth.
"I'll be helping out Recovery Girl, from now on. And you're about to be my patient!" he chirped before he gave a soft kiss to Shinso's hand.

'Oh no.' was the first genuine thought from Shinso.
He could alreasy see Monoma become one of those nurses in horror movies, with the blood stained uniform and the crazy eyes.

Slightly flustered by the blonde's action, though, Shinso couldn't say anything before the woman cut in: "About time Nezu decided to get me some help!"

The hero kept complaining as Monoma went through the check up procedure, and eventually, Shinso was let free.

From then on, Hitoshi kept going to the nurse's office after training, as he had always done.

Every time, Monoma would be there, and he would be the one to treat him, under the watchful, yet approving gaze of Recovery Girl.

Eventually, the woman had decided that the student was competent enough to be trusted alone, but Shinso was more leaning into the thought that the old nurse just wanted a break desperately enough to put the whole student body's health on the line.

Not that he blamed her, of course.
UA was a handful.

As he, once again, made his way into the blindingly white room, he noticed that, this time, the other boy wasn't alone in the room.

Midoriya was there as well, resting into his bed with bandages around his arms, which was weird, as the boy was supposed to have overcome his minor bone-breaking problem.

"Midoriya?" Shinso muttered out in confusion, hoping to get an explaination for his presence.

"Shinso!" Instead of the green haired boy, it was the blond who addressed him, turning around with a pleased smile. "My favorite patient!"

The shorter boy made his way over to Hitoshi, gently taking his hand and guiding him to an unoccupied infirmary bed.
He tried not to mind the fact that Monoma's touch sent sparks flying up his arm, he just decided to blame his training-induced aching for it.

"What happened to him?"
Shinso wondered, still looking at the beat-up class A student. "Didn't Midoriya stop breaking his bones after the sports festival?"

The other injured teen spoke up at that.
"I was training, and I overdid it..." He seemed flustered at the situation he was in.

"Of course, classic class A, always being reckless and inconsiderate."
Monoma huffed out his annoyance with a roll of his eyes.

The class B student then turned back to Midoriya, and even if with discontent, he took the boy's arm in his hand, and brushed his lips just where the bandage finished, activating the school nurse's quirk.

Midoriya's energy seemed to drain considerably, and he was asleep in no time.

Hitoshi decided to ignore the sourness the scene left in his mouth.

Instead, he focused on the fact that the student was reaching into a drawer and searching for something, and then he took out a purple metal tin?

"I'm surprised you helped Midoriya. I thought you hated class A?"
He raised his eyebrow at the uncharacteristic behaviour.

"As a hero, I'll have to help out all kinds of people, even those I don't like."
Monoma muttered out, and Shinso deemed that enough explaination for him.

Dismissing that, Shinso squinted towards the tin, but since the writing was in english, and the box was a bit too far away, he couldn't quite make out what was written on it until the blond took out two plasters with something printed on them, still in english.

He then went back to the sleeping boy, and gently applied them to keep the bandages from unraveling.

Snickering, he took a step back and admired his work.

Shinso tried to make out what was written on them, but gave up when he noticed it wasn't modern english, and then settled on sending a questioning glance towards the hero student.

"What's written on them?"
He finally decided to ask out loud, curious about the glint of amusement in the other's eyes.

"'I’ll beat thee, but I would infect my hands.' and 'Thine face is not worth sunburning.'"
He revealed with joy written all over his features.

After the second needed to translate in his head, Shinso paused, then snorted.
"Are those- are those Shakespearean insults?" he asked, trying to contain his laughter.

Monoma seemed pleased at the fact that Shinso caught that, and turned around to let him see the purple box better.
Now that it was closer, Shinso could clearly read 'Shakespearean Insult Bandages' written on it.
At that point, he could barely contain his laugh.

"I- I think I saw Kaminari walking around with one of those, yesterday!" he finally commented.

Monoma hummed in affirmative.
"His was 'More of your conversation would infect my brain.'"
After a moment of pondering, he added:
"I gave one to Mineta, too! He got 'Methink’st thou art a general offence and every man should beat thee.'"

That got Hitoshi to burst out laughing, and then he flinched as he remembered that he was in the infirmary for a reason.

The hero student made his way over to him, and brushed his hand against a gray hair left on top of a desk. Must've been Recovery Girl's.

He gently took Hitoshi's hand in his own, and gave it a kiss, even pulling away with an exaggerated "Mwah!" for good measure.

Shinso felt some of his energy drain, but he overall felt better.

"Are you going to give me one of those, anytime soon?"
He decided to ask, as he, for some reason, really felt like keeping the conversation going.

"Oh, no. These are a class A exclusive."
He chirped, much to Hitoshi's amusement.
"You know, I need to add insult to injury."

Well, that sounded like something Monoma would do.

"I thought you were going to help them, even if you don't like them?" Hitoshi questioned the other teen.

"Yes, I am going to help them, but that doesn't mean I have to be kind to them, too."

He then took another bandaid in hand, and Shinso could tell it read: 'The tartness of his face sours ripe grapes.'
"I'm keeping this for Bakugo." the blond bit his lip not to let his giggles out.

Monoma decided to go on with the check up, and as he went through the motions, Shinso decided to ask him a question, "So, how are you so good at english?" a lot of students struggled with it, since both alphabet and pronunciation were very different from those of the Japanese language.

"I'm bilingual," the boy proudly stated, "My mother is british, so I grew up with both english and japanese."

"That must be so useful..." Shinso groaned in annoyance.

Monoma, without looking up at him, smiled.
"I'm willing to help you out, if you ever need it." after a beat of silence, he added "Are you, by chance, any good at physics?"

"Yes, I'd say I'm doing pretty good. Do we have a deal?"
Hitoshi wasn't really thinking when he agreed to it, but he couldn't find himself regretting his choice.

"Marvelous, then." the blond hummed, and then deemed Shinso good to go.

A few afternoons later, Shinso happened to catch sight of Kirishima, and noticed that he was sporting a plaster with written on it: 'The rankest compound of villainous smell that ever offended nostril.'

He had to bite the inside of his cheek not to burst out laughing.

'God, I love him.'
He thought fondly, and then he paused.

'Oh, no.'

The next time he entered the infirmary, Monoma's touch felt like it was burning his skin, his hands seemed to linger longer, and suddenly, Shinso was so incredibly aware of just how soft Monoma's lips were.

He was looking anywhere but at the blond in front of him.
He scanned his surroundings, searching for something to focus on other than Monoma's soft hands on his skin, or the pleasant smell of his hair.

As he looked around, he noticed a little pile of textbooks on one of the desks -that was probably how Monoma managed to keep up with homework despite helping out in the infirmary.

His gaze then settled on a small item on the desk, that he quickly identified as chapstick.
Maybe that was why Monoma's lips were so soft. Though his lips didn't seem tinted, maybe it was just clear.
He wondered what it tasted like.

He felt warmth spread all over his face.

That was a line of thought he wanted to avoid.

Pretty, blue eyes -were they just blue? If Shinso really looked at them, they were actually grey, with a light shade of blue mixed in- settled on his face, and Monoma looked at him with fake concern.

"What is it, Shinso?"
The hero student gently cupped Hitoshi's face with one hand, then placed the other on his forehead.
"You're looking a bit red... You don't seem to have a fever."

'You're not helping.' the general education student mentally cursed.

"Oh..." the blond seemed to come to a realization, "Your heart is beating so fast."
Shinso was suddenly very aware of the fact that Monoma's pinky was resting just in the right place to feel his heartbeat.

He cursed his heart at the betrayal.

Shinso could do nothing if not sputter and try to look away, but Monoma's hands kept him firmly in place.

In the end, the blond managed to initiate eye contact with Hitoshi, and the taller student noticed that yes, his eyes were, indeed, gray with a light shade of blue mixed in.

Suddenly, he felt something soft graze his forehead, and Monoma let go of his face, taking a few steps back.

"This should settle it. You're good to go!" The blond looked back to the door, and if Shinso hadn't been so flustered, he would've noticed the light shade of pink on the tips of Monoma's ears.

Monoma was having so much fun.

Every time Shinso entered the infirmary, he perked up, ready to tease him and prod at him in any way he could.
Not his fault that the taller was so interesting to mess with.

Just as a grumbling Bakugo was leaving the room, Shinso entered it, all beat up as usual.

"There you are, my saviour from this boring, boring day." Neito greeted him while bringing the back of his hand to his forehead and batting his eyelashes, and the taller nodded in reply, already making his way to a free bed.

Monoma took the other's hands in his, and noticed that his wrists and arms had marks all over them.
"How did you get these?"
He wondered, feeling them under the pads of his fingers.

"I was training with the capture scarf."
The boy responded, unable to tear his gaze away from the careful hands sending shivers up his spine, and giving him goosebumps.

"That must be quite hard. I still have no idea how that thing works, it's so confusing."
The blond muttered under his breath.
"Don't feel bad for not mastering it so soon. I'm sure it took Aizawa-sensei quite some time, too."

Shinso hummed.
"He said it took him six years, but he was self taught."
He bit his lip, and Neito could see self doubt flashing in his purple eyes.

Now, that was not allowed.

Monoma gently slid his hands down Shinso's wrists, then cradling his hands gently with his own.

He gave them a squeeze, and that prompted the other to look him in the eyes.
"Listen, Shinso. I think you're amazing for putting so much effort into your dreams, and I think it's quite admirable."

His expression was soft and gentle, and Shinso seemed to be studying it with attention.

"You shouldn't put yourself down like that. You're not Aizawa-sensei and shouldn't compare yourself to him."
Shinso was still looking at him, but after a beat of silence, he nodded his head hesitantly.

"Thank you." he smiled, and from somewhere within, Monoma thought that was beautiful.

After a moment, Neito perked up again, regretfully loosening his grip on the other's hands.
"Good! Now that you're out of your gloom, how about you teach me how to use that scarf, someday?"
He asked, his voice going back to his usual tone.

Shinso seemed to ponder this for a moment.
"You don't always have a quirk to rely on, right? A support item for mobility wouldn't be a bad idea... Though it doesn't really seem like your thing. I think something like a grappling hook would fit you better."
He decided, looking at him closely.

Monoma furrowed his brows in fake disappointment, though he was surprised that Shinso had paid such close attention to him.
He was quite pleased with it as well, but it didn't mean the taller could get away from teasing.

"Awww, and here I thought you wouldn't decline getting to see me get all tied up!"
He lamented, voice conveying his displeasure.

Shinso flared up at the comment.
"Are you flirting with me?"
He asked, dumbfounded.

"Yes, I have been doing that for the past -what?- two months? But thank you for noticing."
The blond rolled his eyes, then gently put his hand under the other's chin, and gave him a kiss on the cheek, activating [Heal].

Shinso seemed to be still processing the turn of events, and Neito honestly thought he would just get up and get out of the room without responding to his flirting, but before the taller could exit the infirmary, he turned around.

"Are you free, tomorrow?"
He asked him, the pink of his cheeks having subsided almost completely.

"Why, yes I am!"
Neito turned to look at him from where he'd been tidying some papers.

"Would you like to go to a cafè together, then?"
The general education student proposed with what was probably more confidence than what he was feeling.

"Is this a date you're asking me out on?"
Monoma asked with a teasing grin.
This was going unexpectedly well, he thought.

"If you want it to be."
Shinso finally grinned back, smug.

"Perfect, then!"
Neito hummed, and in his elation, he hadn't noticed that the taller had been stepping closer to him until his face was being held up by a slightly calloused hand.

He then felt slightly chapped lips press on his cheek, much like he had done earlier.

It was a brief contact that sent shivers down his spine, and before he knew it, it was done.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow then."
Shinso spoke up, and Monoma nodded in reply.

Just then, the door opened to reveal a support student, looking dazed.

"I'll see you tomorrow! Now shoo, I have another patient to treat."

With that, Monoma directed his attention to Hatsume's nth victim, already looking forward to the next day.

Notes:

Thank you for reading!

This is my first time writing both their dynamic, and Shinso, so please tell me if something seems off, I'd appreciate it a lot!

Next up is some (hopefully) good angst, but that's definetly a bigger project, and it'll likely take me waaay longer than this. And I need to do my summer homework, too. Sobbing.

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed!
