Work Text:
“You are no longer glowing like you used to, Sunshine.”
The usual pale, complexion even and calmed Grim Reaper, is now nothing but a blotchy mess of red. Eyes swollen from the relentless tears that wouldn’t stop falling, puffy and it’s rimmed painted with an angry red caused by the constant rubbing.
“It’s all my fault. This is all my fault. The reason they’re gone is all because of me.” Casper’s body shook with every sob, tears continued to escape his bright red orbs, contributing to the trail of tears that had already run down his cheeks. His throat ached from the cries that had torn through it. Never in his life did he expect himself to feel such an overwhelming force of emotions breaking through his now dull heart.
Drained by the emotions that he no longer contains, Casper is utterly spent. He felt overwhelmed. Lost. Lost in the sea of never-ending what-ifs and could-have-been. What if he never tried to connect the two of you? Would you still be by his side? What if he wasn’t assigned to be the one that hunts you down? Would you still be alive, carefree, and shining like always? What if. What if.
Yet all of these are useless. You will never return. You will never be the Sunshine he once knew and fell in love with. You will never be able to have the happy ending that the both of you yearn for secretly.
The weight of his regrets was suffocating, leaving him gasping for breath and grasping for any sense of solace. Never had he felt more like dying, despite being already ‘dead’. With Azreal pressed against his embrace, he cried his heart out. Sobbed through the night like there’s no tomorrow.
Maybe in this lifetime, in this universe, you two were never meant to be. Perhaps you were the sun while he was the moon, yearning for closure yet never being able to achieve it. The moments when you two were together, like a lunar eclipse, were brief yet cherished. Maybe in another life, when the moon finally meets the sun again, when the two are finally aligned, the stars will bear witness to your reunion. The heavens will light up with a brilliance that rivals the dawn, and the universe will hold its breath, marveling at the beauty of the love you two beholds. In that perfect alignment, the world will pause, if only for a moment, to honor the connection that was always meant to be.
Maybe In Another Life, It Will Be Us
