Aventurine was an incredibly dynamic individual. If he wasn’t so preoccupied with both his responsibilities with the IPC, his research, and teaching, Veritas might have been content to spend the rest of his days studying every little one of Aventurine’s tactics, mannerisms, and mechanisms that helped him function in a world that is so against him. Even with the little bit of attention he could afford to Aventurine, he noticed how even in relatively “friendly” conversations, the gambler was always calculated, always searching the other person for any hints about their motivations while keeping his own cards close to his chest. Behind that guarded smile was an intelligent man stripping his conversation partner’s character bare right before his eyes.
He wondered if it was exhausting always being on the offensive.

“Her familiarity with me does not excuse her unprofessional attitude. This hospital has certain standards to maintain efficiency and provide our patients with the treatment they deserve.”
“I apologize on her behalf.”
Zayne’s words were surely branded into your mind, and if anyone were to split your head open and peer inside, that’s exactly what they’d find—a festering wound in the shape of his disappointment, excruciating and untreatable.

Pressing her lips together, she glanced quickly around the hall, watchful for familiar faces that actually might question her if they saw who she was talking to.
When she felt the coast was sufficiently clear, she turned back to him. “What are you doing after work?”
Jax only stared at her for a beat or two, his eyes a touch wider than they had been a moment ago. He seemed surprised to hear her be so forward—an unintended effect, but not an unwelcome one.
At length, though, he smirked. “You tell me.”

It's subtle at first. His shorter temper, leaving his food untouched, following her around. Everybody else writes it off as him being him, but something is clearly wrong.
Then he bursts into her room, shaking and drenched in sweat. He looks desperate and terrified.
“P-Pomni, I…” He lifts a hand to curl loosely over his chest where his heart must be trying to break his ribs. His voice rattles out of him, brittle with emotion. “I’m in heat.”
Her stomach drops through the floor.
