“I was so nearly devastated when you called us ‘friends’ in the carriage,” Colin murmured, moving his hand to her back to draw wistful shapes across her bare skin.
He expected her to chuckle, maybe – to tease him. Or maybe for her to gasp a breath at the still-unfamiliar sensation of being touched so familiarly. Instead, her body tensed, the plush mouth that had been barely skimming the area below his collarbone retreating from him, as if she were biting her lip.
