The Prom
“So we’re agreed?” Kevin asked, his tone anxious.
“We are,” Nazz affirmed, her expression set and serious.
“You think they’ll be okay with it?”
“Eddy will. Edd will probably be a little upset,” she said, her mouth turning down into a frown that made Kevin worry anew.
“So, maybe I shouldn’t do this to him?”
“No,” she disagreed. “I think, in the long run, it’ll be alright. He’ll forgive you. And love it.”
“I’ll take your word for it. And blame you if he’s pissed.”
She laughed, her own worry lines smoothing away. “I don’t mind taking full blame.” She reached up and ruffled Kevin’s hair. “It’ll be fine,” she assured him again. “Your hair is getting so long,” she observed.
Kevin shrugged. “Edd likes it.”
“Makes you look like a troublemaker.”
Kevin laughed. “Hardly. Edd says it’s nice to grab on to.”
She made a face at him, pushing her palm into his face. “Did not need to know that.” Then, her expression shifted to sly. “Keep it up and I’ll start relating some intimate details of Eddy and me.”
“Uh, I’m good.”

“Eddward! It is almost time to walk over to Kevin’s!” The musical shout from his mother came from downstairs. Loud enough for Edd to hear in the bathroom, where he fussed continually with his tie and that one lock of hair that wouldn’t curl just right. It wanted to curl under when Edd specifically wanted it to curl out. Curses.
“I shall be down in a moment, Mother,” he called back, glancing at his phone and pressing the button to display the time. He was almost late and Edd did not like to be late.
He glared at the offending lock one more time, flipped it out, then straightened his tie again. His blue-green eyes gazed at his reflection, contemplating how he looked. Not bad. Even after all of Kevin’s constant compliments, he didn’t consider himself a ‘catch’ or anything. He didn’t think he was ugly, per se, but not cute or adorable or, and here he blushed giving much needed color to his pale cheeks, sexy, like Kevin said.
His skin was clear, his eyes were a nice color, and he had decent hair. At least, what one could see slipping on his forehead and nape from under his hat. A new hat for the occasion – not the one with the white stripe, but a solid black to match his tuxedo. He turned his head to admire his profile in a side-glance. Yes, not too horrible.
He smiled at himself, trying not to wince inwardly at the gap in his teeth. He’d never gotten around to having it fixed, but he knew Kevin loved it. Loved his smile, and he knew he could get his way on many things by simply smiling at Kevin, so he should really keep it like it was. If Kevin thought him perfect, there was no reason to change anything about himself. He wouldn’t change himself for someone else anyway. He wasn’t like that.
“Eddward!” He chuckled to himself. Mother would never have yelled in such a way before her and Father’s time away in Europe.
“Coming, Mother!”
With one final glance to check that he looked as perfect as he could look, Edd stepped back, tugged at the hem of his tuxedo jacket and squared his shoulders. It was go time. Time for prom.
It was a little embarrassing to walk across the street to Kevin’s house with his parents in tow. His hands clutched a plastic container with Kevin’s boutonniere, a carnation that matched the color of Edd’s vest, which was a green that wasn’t that far from Kevin’s eye color. He had no idea what color Kevin was wearing, or even what style of tuxedo Kevin had picked out. Kevin wanted it to be a surprise.
Edd went for classic. He was not a showy person, nor was he an outwardly flamboyant person. A simple suit, a full vest, and a bow tie the same color as the vest. He knew Kevin would lovingly laugh about the bow tie, but Edd figured once a geek, always a geek. The only thing he and Kevin knew about each other’s outfits were the dress socks Edd found online and bought for the both of them - Iron Man for him, Captain America for Kevin.
There was no doubt that Kevin would look devastatingly handsome. He looked handsome in anything, even grungy shorts and a ripped tank top - his house-cleaning outfit. Edd was excited to see Kevin all dressed up in formal wear, though. There’d been dates where they’d dressed nice, but prom was the first occasion they had where they’d be in full formal wear. Sylvie had told Edd, after shopping with Kevin for his outfit, that Kevin would knock Edd’s socks off. Rachel assured her friend that Edd would equally stun Kevin.
As his nervous hands shook the innocent flower he held, he thought how strange it was for him to go to the prom. It certainly wasn’t on his radar this time last year when, as a junior, he watched the seniors work themselves into a tizzy getting ready for their prom, while he lamented the fact that he had no one with whom to go to junior prom. Edd would tell himself it was a silly waste of time, money, and effort to devote to one night. It still hurt that no one had asked him or had hinted at it, even though he didn’t think he’d want to go in the first place.
Until Kevin.
Especially now that they were out. Edd thought he had a slight understanding of the excitement prom brought to the hearts of high school students. He wanted all of that traditional and, to him, corny stuff surrounding prom. He wanted to take posed pictures with Kevin. Wanted to have dinner with him and his friends beforehand. Wanted to wear an uncomfortable suit with a droopy boutonniere. Wanted to ride around in a limo. Wanted to dance to whatever popular slow songs were in vogue. Wanted to go to the after party at the lake house. Wanted it all.
He climbed the steps of Kevin’s front porch, his parents smiling behind him. He gave them a quick glance and saw his mother with her hands clasped and pressed to her chest. His father gave him a thumbs up, grinning in a way Edd had never seen before. Turning back to the door, he took a deep breath and rang the bell, where normally he walked right in. He deemed it proper to seem like a gentleman on this special night.

‘I wonder if Edd is this nervous,’ Kevin thought, bent over the sink of his bathroom to brush his teeth for the third time. He certainly was. More nervous, he thought, than he was before their first date. He’d been way nervous for that.
Who was he kidding? Didn’t he know his little dork? He knew Edd was definitely nervous. He hoped Edd was as excited about prom as he was, though. He was so happy they were out now and could go as a couple instead of a secret date as it looked like might happen. Sitting at the prom with Edd, but not with Edd, would have been torture. Now, he could hold Edd all night and dance – something they’d never done. Not seriously.
He wanted this night to be perfect in every way. As much as he wasn’t too thrilled over a lot of high school traditions, he really wanted to make memories with prom. Now, with Edd, he wanted all those posed pictures and dances and after parties. Pictures their future kids could look at and laugh, pointing at how dorky their dads looked when they were younger. The future memory thrilled Kevin in such a way that his stomach clenched.
They were closing in on the six-month mark, so thoughts of the future shouldn’t include children. He wondered again, as he often did, if Edd ever thought about a family. He was confident that Edd viewed their relationship as Kevin did – something permanent. He wouldn’t have planned the next few years with Kevin if he didn’t think about them seriously. Edd had even chosen Maryland for his school, despite other prestigious schools offering him scholarships. Simply because Kevin would be there.
That was a huge commitment.
Edd would talk about living in Boston with Kevin when he went to Harvard for graduate school, mentioning that Kevin should easily find a job in his chosen field in the large city. Edd would be there at least six years in school, so that meant he planned the next ten years together. That meant…a lot.
Kevin was just as committed. He could close his eyes and see the future. See them in a house together…somewhere. Building a life together. They’d fallen into their relationship so easily, that it felt as if they’d spent their entire lives together as more than enemies.
Kevin had always wanted kids, but he hadn’t told Edd that, and Kevin wasn’t exactly sure how to bring it up. Edd wasn’t even eighteen yet and had all that schooling ahead of him. Even if he were to want children, would he wait until he had his degrees and found a place to work? Their late twenties, of course, wasn’t too old, but Kevin thought maybe they could adopt earlier?
He shook his head, looking himself over again in the mirror. Definitely not the time for his brain to go down that road. Something to consider talking to Edd about over the summer maybe.
The doorbell sounded faintly from downstairs and his heart dropped into his stomach. Fuck, he was so nervous. He couldn’t wait to see Edd, but damn, his palms were sweating. Why? He washed and dried his hands, thought about brushing his teeth for the fourth time (decided not to), and drew in a deep breath.
Go time.

Kevin was breathtaking. He’d picked out a similar black tux, that had tails and Edd felt his cheeks heat up. His boyfriend looked so sexy. The vest was a surprise; a blue-green that Edd knew was close to his own eye color. So Kevin had done the same as he had done.
It was cliché. Kevin came down the stairs where Edd waited as Edd had seen in dozens of teen comedies and rom coms. He smiled the whole way down, his eyes only for Edd, though their parents stood in the background watching with their camera phones at the ready. Edd knew his mouth was slightly open and his expression showed his awe; he had a brief thought of disbelief that this gorgeous man was his. However, Kevin’s smile, with his eyes full of love, chased that notion out of Edd’s head. The last month had proved their love and, more importantly to Edd, that they deserved each other.
Edd got a chaste kiss when Kevin reached him and, flustered, he shoved the plastic container into Kevin’s hands. “F-for you,” he stammered.
Kevin took it gently, lifting it slightly to see it better. “I like the color,” he said. “It’s like your eyes.”
“That’s what I wanted to give you.”
Kevin leaned to peer around Edd at his mom. “Can you get Edd’s?”
While Sylvie went to fetch Edd’s boutonniere, Edd took the container back and opened it, extracting Kevin’s flower and handing the plastic holder to his mother. “If you will allow me, Kevin,” he said. “I can pin this on you.”
“Go for it, Dee.”
His hands trembled as he did, but it wasn’t the first boutonniere Edd had ever pinned on, so it was soon gracing Kevin’s lapel. “It matches your vest,” he said.
“I got the vest I thought matched your eyes,” Kevin whispered, low enough for Edd’s ears only. “My favorite color.”
Kevin had gotten him a green carnation and Edd marveled at how they thought alike. It took a few minutes for Kevin to pin it neatly to his lapel, tugging at the suit to straighten it out. “I love it, Kevin,” Edd said, looking down at the color so similar to his lover’s eyes.
“Can we get some pictures before everyone else gets here?” Sylvie asked.
“Sure, Mom!” Kevin answered, looking at his mother. “Outside?”
“Of course!”
The friends had all decided to take their pre-Prom pictures at Kevin’s home. Sylvie loved to garden, and her backyard was magazine worthy, with beds of flowers in a riot of spring colors, a little fountain, rock gardens, and ivy-covered arbors. Edd had helped her this year with planting and readying the flowerbeds after the winter snows disappeared.
Their friends weren’t supposed to arrive for another hour, so they allowed Sylvie to drag them into the backyard, followed by Edd’s laughing parents and Pete. It was embarrassing, at first, to have Sylvie order them around from spot to spot in order to find the perfect backdrop, but once they started taking the pictures, both boys had fun.
Kevin smiled down at Edd, who had his arms wrapped around Kevin’s one arm, standing side by side, as Sylvie clicked away. His little dork looked amazing. He liked to see Edd dressed up as he was, but the bright, gap-toothed smile and shining eyes mesmerized Kevin. “You look really handsome all dressed up,” he said.
The blush that flared up in Edd’s cheeks made him chuckle. “Kevin,” Edd said.
“I’m serious, Dee.”
“Not as handsome as you.”
“We’re gonna be the best looking couple at the prom,” Kevin declared as he followed Sylvie’s instruction to turn toward Edd.
Edd tilted his head up for a kiss. “Most certainly,” he murmured.

It was organized chaos after their friends, parents and family in tow, started to arrive. Sylvie marshaled them all like a pro photographer in order to get her pictures. Everyone was babbling, laughing, and jostling around, the excitement of prom fueling their enthusiasm. Parents chatted to each other, drinking and snacking on the spread Sylvie, Rachel, Edd, and Kevin had prepared earlier. Serious posed photos quickly gave way to goofy poses from the teenagers and Edd couldn’t believe he found himself in the midst of this crowd.
To see his smiling mother, her eyes shining, chatting to Eddy’s mother, made him happy in a way he hadn’t been in a long time. She looked ten years younger and happy, and he knew it wasn’t only because she was home. His father, too, holding a craft beer (of all things!) and wearing khaki shorts as he stood in a group with Pete and the other fathers present, was a huge surprise. Edd suddenly looked forward to the summer in a whole new way, with the prospect of spending plenty of time with his parents.
The limo bus arrived promptly at two and the group piled in, laughing and chattering like a pack of monkeys. The dresses of the girls reminded Edd of a floral bouquet with the riot of pastel colors. The boys were all dressed in various tuxedos, mostly black, though Joel stepped out in blue and Rolf wore white.
The limo bus had picked them up in the early afternoon to give the teens the thrill of being in a limo and driven around their small town. The company, owned by Angel’s uncle, provided sparkling grape juice to add to the festivities. They stopped a couple of times to take pictures – first in the town park where a pretty stream babbled by and provided a picturesque background. They stopped at a couple of older and unique looking buildings, and had to get the obligatory picture with the statue of the founder of Peach Creek at City Hall. Kevin told Edd everyone got pictures with the statue on prom – a tradition started ages ago.
Edd had suggested the restaurant for dinner. It was the place Kevin had taken him the night of their first time. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was romantic. The teens invaded the somewhat stuffy place, injecting their life and laughter into it. Their snooty waiter seemed put out by the large group, but for the most part, they got indulgent smiles and gushing compliments of their outfits from older patrons.
The prom was at a banquet facility on an apple farm. The rolling fields of apple trees were beautifully in bloom, framing the building built to look like a rustic barn (only much bigger than a real barn would be). It was lovely, covered in strings of lights inside and out that Edd couldn’t wait to see when the sky got darker.
He still could not believe he was here, wedged into the limo bus squished between Kevin and Joel. Away from school, the teens were even more rowdy. Not in bad way, but their language was a lot looser, making Edd’s ears burn and his tongue ache with admonishing everyone for their words. He did find himself laughing more than he thought he ever would with this group. Why had he ever been nervous? To be included in the teasing and innuendos gave his heart a warm feeling.
Not that he never felt that inclusion with Ed and Eddy, but to know that this large group all accepted him (better yet, accepted him as Kevin’s boyfriend) was a completely different level. For a boy who had never felt included at school, he felt it a miracle that he was in the midst of it. There was a small pang of regret that he’d taken so long to make this happen. The end of school loomed up ahead of the group soon, and with it they would go their separate ways.
At least they had the summer.

The music faded out as their Principal, Dr. Ruffin, took the stage, microphone in hand. A couple of the prom organizers herded off the last of the dancers to make room for the King and Queen dance.
“Not gonna be jealous, are you guys?” Joel said, glancing around Maddie at Eddy and Edd, who stood with their friend group at the edge of the dance area.
“Why would I be?” Eddy growled in response. “Pretty sure the King isn’t interested in the Queen.”
“I am not jealous,” Edd stated, much more calmly. “Kevin and Nazz are dear friends. Nothing more.”
“Besides, Edd would kill Kevin…”
“I would not resort to violence, Eddy,” Edd protested.
“Ladies, Gentlemen, and Enbies,” Dr. Ruffin announced. Edd thought it endearing that the older man tried to be inclusive, especially seeing as how they still stuck to old-fashioned traditions of having a King and Queen of the prom. “It’s time to welcome your Prom Queen and King!”
Still, they kept the tradition for a reason, if the enthusiastic applause from the crowd was an indication. Edd cheered, too, since his boyfriend was the King and his close friend was the Queen.
Nazz and Kevin stepped onto the stage from the back, holding hands as they joined Dr. Ruffin at the front. They waved their free hands, big smiles plastered on their faces.
“Nazz truly looks beautiful, Eddy,” Edd said, leaning closer to his friend so he could be heard.
“She’s always beautiful,” Eddy said, his eyes never leaving the figure of Nazz onstage.
“True, but she is radiant tonight.”
Kevin himself looked good and Edd drank him in. He shook his head – Kevin looked so cocky and sure of himself on stage. He watched with an amused expression as the principal placed crowns on Nazz first, then on Kevin. Oh, he looked so rakish with it on. He wore it with a careless air, sending little waves to the crowd.
‘Now,’ Edd thought, ‘time for their dance.’ He was curious what song Nazz would choose. He figured it wouldn’t be overly romantic. He wasn’t very up on modern music, and wondered if there were a song that suggested a friendship type of relationship as opposed to a romantic one.
However, instead of announcing the dance, Dr. Ruffin said in the mic, “As you know, every year the Prom Queen and King have a dance together, but this year our couple came to the prom committee to request a change to the tradition.”
A confused babble swept the crowd and Edd glanced to his side at Eddy, who returned his confused glance.
“They requested to each dance with a partner of their choice to a song of their choice.”
The confused babble turned into a more “ahhh” sound and excited chattering. Someone behind Edd made the comment that “It’s about time. I’d hate to see two people who barely tolerate each other forced to dance together.”
The commenter’s date laughed and said, “Well, at least Kevin and Nazz are friends, so it wouldn’t have been that bad.”
“Still.”
Edd’s thoughts hadn’t caught up to the principals remarks. He watched in bemusement as Dr. Ruffin gestured to one side of the stage. “Miss Natalie, please choose your partner.”
Nazz did something like a curtsy to the Principal, flouncing out the skirt of her pale, pink dress. Edd heard Eddy groan and he looked at his friend again, who now wore a pained smile as he watched his girlfriend practically float down the stage stairs and across the floor to him. When she reached Eddy, she held out her hand, her eyes dancing. “Shall we, Eddy?”
Eddy went willingly, mesmerized by the beautiful girl. Nazz took him to the center of the floor and faced him, waiting for the music to start. Edd recognized it, a sweet tune by Ed Sheeran called “Perfect”. His friends looked so happy, wrapped up in each other as they started moving to the music. What a sweet gesture, he thought.
“Of course, Ed Sheeran,” a low voice said on his left side. It was Joel, who had inched closer to Edd when Eddy moved to the dance floor.
“It is a song Eddy played for her on Valentine’s Day,” Edd murmured.
“Ah, makes sense,” Joel said, then gave him a half smile. “You’re next.”
“Beg your pardon?”
He jerked his head toward the stage. “Pretty sure Kev will pick you.”
Oh.
Oh!
Oh no!
Of course Kevin would pick him! Who else? If Kevin weren’t going to dance with Nazz, then. Then. Oh, dear. His hands automatically lifted, clasped together to pull on his fingers. Kevin expected him to dance – alone – in front of the whole prom? He glanced back up at the stage to see Kevin staring at him. He still wore his affable smile, but his eyes watched Edd with an intensity Edd usually saw only in the bedroom.
Curses.
He glanced around, wildly thinking about escaping, though he knew he wouldn’t. It did seem like a decent idea. Rolf caught his eye and gave him a little grin, but also a firm shake of the head. Rolf didn’t have to do that. Edd wasn’t about to bolt and hide. Still, he gulped and turned back toward the dance floor.
His fingers fidgeted nervously as the song droned on. Oh, would it never end? The quicker to get to his mortification! He felt guilty thinking that way. He knew Kevin simply wanted to dance with him and Edd knew they would dance together that evening. This? This was them alone, in front of everyone, with everyone’s attention on them. It was one thing to be the focus for a few days after they came out. Most of the time he didn’t notice it.
He’d be well aware of the attention the whole handful of minutes of the dance.
Nazz and Eddy’s song played on, the bars of the music stretching for what seemed like hours. The lighting even highlighted the dancing couple, shining spotlights directly at them. Eddy was surprisingly graceful, guiding Nazz in a sweet glide around. Oh, dear, Edd wasn’t a good dancer. At least, not for more modern dancing. He knew how to waltz and other fancier dances. He should have thought ahead on this. He knew he would dance with Kevin tonight, but he never considered it important to learn something new.
Because he didn’t think that he’d be center stage, so to speak.
The applause for Nazz and Eddy startled his attention back to the two figures, who bowed to the audience before Eddy gave Nazz a kiss by grabbing her waist and dipping her. She clung to his shoulders, laughing until his lips pressed to hers.
If Kevin did that…
His mouth was dry, because the pair walked off to the side and the spotlights on the stage came back on. Dr. Ruffin gestured to Kevin. “And now our Prom King.”
With a little nod of his head, Kevin jumped off the stage and went straight toward Edd, who couldn’t stop the tremble that went through his body. Kevin’s expression was a mix of apprehension and excitement that melted Edd in the best way. He could see how much Kevin wanted this as he bore down on Edd, who felt like sinking into the floor.
Kevin stopped in front of him, that little smirk that Edd couldn’t resist gracing his lips. “May I have this dance, Dee?”
Edd couldn’t answer. He simply nodded, his lips slightly parted as he stared up at Kevin and held out his hand. Kevin smiled and took it, pulling him toward the middle of the floor as the lights around the dance area dimmed. There was applause, but Edd couldn’t hear it. His whole focus was on Kevin, who walked backwards pulling him along.
When they stopped, Kevin pulled him gently closer. He wasn’t sure how it happened, but his free hand ended up on Kevin’s shoulder and Kevin’s on his waist. A proper stance, which surprised Edd. He didn’t know Kevin knew how to dance. Surely, he’d seen Kevin do his dorky style of dancing to fast music – an unrhythmic gyrating where Kevin barely moved to the beat.
“Listen to the lyrics, Dee,” Kevin whispered. “I picked this for you.”
Edd barely nodded when the song started, Kevin singing along with it. The lyrics started right away.
“I’m only one call away.
I’ll be there to save the day.
Superman got nothing on me.
I’m only one call away.”
The music started and so did Kevin, leading Edd in a simple dance. The song was a little peppier than a normal slow love song. Despite the fact that Kevin normally couldn’t follow the beat when dancing, he certainly did now. Edd couldn’t even think of his feet as he followed Kevin’s lead, staring up into his boyfriend’s eyes as they moved. Kevin continued to sing, loud enough to be heard by anyone nearby, though Edd had no awareness of those around him. Everything dissolved into this perfect moment where it seemed like just the two of them occupied this space.
The words. He listened to them, marveling at how perfectly they fit. How Kevin promised with the lyrics to be there for him. To be his strength when he needed it. Hadn’t he already been that for Edd? Hadn’t Edd been able to count on Kevin whenever he felt stressed or upset or scared or anxious? Edd loved his voice, too. The way he could inject so much emotion as he sang, looking at Edd with love and affection.
Near the end of the song, the music stopped and Kevin stopped them, holding Edd close as he sang,
“I’m only one call away
I’ll be there to save the day
Superman got nothin on me
I’m only one…I’m only one call away.”
Kevin sang that line with such feeling as the note rose in octaves on the word ‘one’, and Edd stared open-mouthed. He knew Kevin had a good voice, but that was incredible. He couldn’t think over it, though, because the music started again for the last few lyrics until it ended, Kevin whispering the last line. “I’m only one call away.”
And there, in front of their classmates, teachers, and chaperones, Kevin leaned down and gave him one of those kisses usually saved for privacy. Without thinking, Edd’s arms went up around Kevin’s neck, giving himself up to it with an eagerness that shocked him.
Then his hearing cleared as his focus on Kevin faded, and he heard the applause of their audience. Kevin was smiling down at him and his cheeks flared up. Edd hid his face against Kevin’s shoulder, feeling a wild urge to punch his boyfriend when he felt Kevin’s laughter, but they soon separated slightly and, with hands joined, bowed to the crowd of cheering students.

“I thought you would kill me.”
“You seem to think that often,” Edd said in response. He looked slightly up at Kevin’s grinning face. “I may have to start carrying a weapon with me.”
“You’d never hurt me.”
“That is true.”
They were no longer in their little bubble. The dance floor was crowded with couples swaying to the slow song playing – something Edd didn’t know. He didn’t care, however, because it was still sweet to be in Kevin’s arms, his arms around Kevin’s neck and Kevin’s around his waist. They weren’t moving very much. Not as much as their solo dance, because too many bodies pressed against them. It was the first slow song after the dancing started, because after the King and the Queen dances, the music kicked up to a series of popular fast songs so the teenagers could rave to their hearts’ content.
Edd did not want to dance that way, so they skipped off to the side to their table to rejoin their friends. Or some of them. Most were out gyrating their way through the music. It was a good opportunity to let Edd’s blush fade while Kevin fetched some punch for them.
Friends came and went, chattering to Kevin and Edd. Not their normal friend group, but the other students Kevin knew. It was strange for Edd to be included, but he felt more comfortable than before they came out. Kevin involved Edd in his life so much now, that other students saw Edd as someone more than a quiet, shy, nerd who ghosted through the halls. While Edd wouldn’t consider himself popular by any means, his relationship with Kevin brought him from the shadows into the limelight, so to speak.
Dancing with Kevin for the Prom King’s dance seemed to cement their relationship in the minds of the other students in a way their coming out, being constantly together, and kissing at school, hadn’t. Edd had some regret for being so scared of coming out. He should have put more trust in Kevin’s friends than he had. To be fair, at first, he didn’t know them very well, but he should have seen it right away. They were good people.
The way Kevin’s eyes shone when Edd kissed him at school could have been a regular thing for months now if it weren’t for Edd’s stubbornness.
He shooed that thought away. After a few long talks with Kevin’s mother, and a good long one with his mother once she’d returned, he’d learned that his feelings were valid. He shouldn’t think he was wrong – he felt what he felt at the time. Regret wouldn’t change anything. Both he and Kevin had to grow and adapt to their relationship.
He felt Kevin’s lips on his forehead, pulling him from his thoughts. He smiled, tightening his hold on Kevin. Though the prom was fun and he was happy, he also thought it would be nice to be somewhere quiet with Kevin and doing more than slightly swaying on the dance floor receiving little forehead kisses. He wondered what time it was, because he knew they were supposed to move to the after party at some point.
The music picked up into something more pop and modern, and Kevin didn’t let him go. He pulled out of the tight hold, and grabbed Edd’s hands, swinging them back and forth, trying to get Edd to follow him in a dorky little dance. Edd laughed, his cheeks flushing at how silly he must look, but the gleam in Kevin’s eyes and the sly grin made it worth it. Edd thought Kevin was trying to do swing moves, but he was woefully unsuccessful at it. Perhaps he should show Kevin someday.
Edd jerked his head to the side, hollering, “Let us sit!” over the music. Kevin nodded and led him off the dance floor, squeezing carefully between the enthusiastic dancers, trying not to get clonked in the head.
Their table was empty, save for Eddy and Nazz. Edd collapsed into the chair next to Eddy, who grinned at him. “Smooth dance moves, Sockhead.”
Edd shot him a frown. “I do not see you showing off your nonexistent dance moves, Eddy.”
Eddy scoffed, straightening the collar of his suit. “I didn’t want to put Kevin to shame.”
“Whatever. C’mon, let’s go grab our beautiful dates some punch, asshole,” Kevin said, the insult coming off mildly. Kevin’s opinion of Eddy had drastically changed over the school year.
“Kevin,” Edd chided. “Stop calling me beautiful.”
“I will when you aren’t anymore, sweetheart. Guess you’ll have to hear it forever.”
“That’s a good one, Kev,” Eddy said, standing up and kissing Nazz on the head. He glanced over at Edd’s returning flush. “Really good.” He hooked his arm out for Kevin to take. “Shall I escort you?”
“Let’s do punch!” Kevin responded with a grin, tucking his hand in the crook of Eddy’s arm.
“Those two,” Nazz murmured, watching the pair wander off together. She gestured at them as she turned to look at Edd. “Did you ever think you’d see them like this?”
“Not in a million years,” Edd agreed. “I do admit it gives me satisfaction.”
“Oh, me too,” Nazz agreed. “Those two used to make me so angry as kids. I just wanted us all to get along. But, oh no. We have the two most stubborn and hard-headed best friends in the world.”
Edd chuckled, placing his arms on the table and leaning his weight against it. “Truly.”
“I’m sorry it fell on you and Ed as well.”
“It was never your fault, Nazz.”
“I know, but I should have stepped in more. But, I liked Kevin too much to try and stop him.” She scrunched her pretty face up into a grimace. “Crushes make you do stupid things.”
“I did think you had a crush on Kevin back then,” Edd said. “It was always a mystery to me that the two of you did not date.”
“It wasn’t much of a mystery to me,” she said, her eyes dancing mischievously. “Remember that time you went in search of Eddy’s brother?”
“Oh, yes! What a horrendous affair!”
“I know we were still young, but I kept flirting with Kevin. The entire time,” she said, pursing her lips. “He was more worried about his bike than about me. I think that’s when I suspected he didn’t like girls.”
Edd hummed, mulling that over. It had been a mystery to him when he thought about it, which, admittedly, wasn’t often. Once the ‘kids’ had drifted apart in middle school, Edd was relieved to not be a target of Kevin’s hostility. Kevin, Nazz, and Rolf rarely came into his orbit, but it wasn’t as if he didn’t know anything about them. All three were insanely popular. When he did think about them, he did wonder why neither Rolf nor Kevin dated Nazz.
Nazz herself went through a string of boyfriends and dates, but never Rolf or Kevin. Edd knew, now, that Rolf didn’t date anyone because his parents had arranged a marriage for him already. Edd thought this strange, but Rolf assured him he was happy with the arrangement, and couldn’t wait for his bride-to-be to move to the U.S. after college.
Of course, he now knew why Kevin never dated Nazz, but back then he thought it strange. Nazz being the most popular girl in school and head cheerleader, paired with the most popular boy and athletic star. Nazz did date their middle school football team quarterback, an arrogant little toad (Kevin’s words) who moved to another state during their sophomore year. Kevin never liked him and was glad the move broke up him and his best friend.
Kevin and Eddy returned, breaking up Edd’s thoughts and scattering them away. The punch, a fizzy concoction that Edd hoped wasn’t spiked, refreshed him, though he was still warm and felt a little sticky from sweat. The lights, combined with the amount of bodies packed together, combined with dancing, combined with the tuxedo, drenched him in a bad way. He hoped he could shower at the lake house, because he couldn’t bear to sleep like this.
“How many are going to the lake house?” he asked.
“Just our group,” Angel said, settling into a chair at the table, held for her by Ben. “It’s huge. It’s actually my uncle’s company that owns it. He entertains clients there. There’s like, five bedrooms. There will have to be a couple of double ups, but some of us aren’t dating each other, so we can figure it out when we get there. There’s the hotel party, too. We can stop there if you want before we head out to the lake house.”
Kevin shook his head. “Nah, I just want to get to the lake,” he said, getting everyone to agree.
“Whenever we’re ready,” Angel said, checking her phone. “The party bus will take us there.”
“How shall we get home, then?” Edd asked, looking at Kevin. “Surely, the limo will not wait until tomorrow?”
Eddy answered instead, “A few of us drove out cars to the lake house yesterday. We should be fine.”
“I even dropped off a bag for us,” Kevin said, leaning against Edd. “So you don’t have to wear the tux for a walk of shame tomorrow.”
“Walk of shame?” Edd asked, as the others at the table laughed.
“Yeah, when you go home after a hookup wearing clothes from the night before,” Nazz explained. “Especially if you’re dressed up. It’s kind of obvious what you were up to.”
Edd flushed, but laughed.
“Don’t laugh, Sockhead,” Eddy teased. “I’ve seen Kevin do the walk of shame from your house plenty of times.”

The lake house was impressive. It overlooked Lake Michigan with a short bit of lawn before the edge of the water, with a firepit. There was no real beach, but rather a rocky slip at the edge, where a dock with no boat waited. Angel mentioned that the boat was in dry dock for maintenance, though she thought that perhaps her uncle took it away in fear that the kids might do something crazy with it.
The kitchen was well stocked and the kids attacked the food hungrily, since the prom had nothing to snack on. Edd wondered if Kevin and Eddy had taken care of that when they dropped off the cars the previous day. He couldn’t imagine the place stayed stocked for food. He also didn’t want to know where the alcohol on the counter came from, but he suspected Nazz. He knew he wouldn’t indulge and likely Kevin wouldn’t either, but at least he’d be able to make sure the others stayed safe.
Rolf hooked up the sound system to his phone and music invaded the space. Where normally chaotic music and loud laughter and noise would disturb him, Edd found that he relished this. These were his friends, old and new, laughing and teasing each other, loosening their ties and slipping off constricting high heels, relaxing and eating and enjoying their time with each other. Edd had wandered over to the floor to ceiling window overlooking the deck and the lake and stared out into the dark evening. What he wouldn’t give to have a home like this! Or, at least the ability to stay for more than a night.
“Do you want to change? I brought some clothes for us.” Kevin’s question startled him out of his thoughts. “They’re up in our room.”
“We get our own room? I thought perhaps we would share with someone.”
“Nah, I claimed it yesterday. We should be able to see the sunrise in the morning if we get up early enough.”
“That sounds romantic.”
“Or see it before we go to sleep,” Kevin teased.
“Are you suggesting we be intimate?” Edd asked, raising an eyebrow at Kevin’s beaming and expectant face. “I do not think I shall be able to do that with everyone here.”
“Everyone will probably be getting lucky tonight.”
“Surely not Rolf or Ed? Can you imagine Rolf having a sexual encounter with Ed’s little sister with Ed just down that hall?”
Kevin laughed, taking Edd’s hand to lead him to the stairs leading to the upper floor. “No, I don’t want to imagine it in the first place. Second, it wouldn’t be a good idea. I think those three and Ed’s date are crashing in the kids’ room.” Saying that, Kevin pointed at a door off the kitchen.
“Kid’s room?”
“Yeah, it’s got a bunch of bunk beds in it. Not the best place to fu—“
“Kevin! Language!”
“Already going for private time?” Jake yelled as Edd followed Kevin upstairs.
“No, you dick!” Kevin shouted back over the music and laughter. “Just getting changed!”
Edd felt his cheeks flare up at everyone’s knowing looks and amused grins. Due to the insinuation, he quickly changed into shorts and a t-shirt and slipped out of the room. He didn’t want anyone to think he and Kevin were fooling around instead of joining the party.

The muffled and rhythmic thumping and squeaking next door would be a telltale sign without the muffled moans and panted whispers. Apparently, Eddy and Nazz had a creaky bed and were making full use of it. He marveled that both of them didn’t care that others were in earshot of them, though Edd could tell they were both trying to keep somewhat quiet.
Edd lay on his back, hands clasped and resting on his belly as he waited for Kevin to finish in the bathroom. He should be back soon because Kevin never took too long, but his boyfriend had wanted a shower before bed, and Edd absolutely refused Kevin’s suggestion of taking one together – to Edd’s mortification because Kevin had suggested it when they were at the fire pit with their friends.
He sincerely wished for earplugs, because while he was happy that Eddy was happy with Nazz and enjoyed sex with her, he didn’t want to hear it. He wondered if this would be what college would be like. He and Kevin would be in the dorms their first year, and, as he’d thought before, he figured dorm walls were not soundproof. He and Kevin would be able to hear if their neighbor was sexually active.
Which meant in turn, their neighbors would be able to hear them.
Granted, the room that shared a wall with theirs would contain two individuals most likely, and unless they were a same-sex couple as Edd and Kevin were, Edd doubted there’d be much sexual activity going on in that room. Edd and Kevin would probably be in the room with the most sexual activity.
If he could bring himself to do it with the knowledge that someone could hear him.
It had gotten slightly easier the past couple of weeks since his parents came home to make love to Kevin with them in the house. The knowing smiles of his mother in the mornings after caused him no end of embarrassment and blushes, but he couldn’t help himself. Kevin was tempting, after all, and Edd reasoned there was no way he could go without sex until August, or even later.
Maybe he should do something to help get over his little hang up. Hadn’t Edd gotten over many hang-ups in the past six months of dating Kevin? He never imagined himself being able to show affection for anyone at school, and here he was, kissing Kevin there. Dancing with Kevin at a school dance. Not to mention all of their intimacy – something Edd wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to do, and now he approached sex as enthusiastically as Kevin did.
Since he loved sex with Kevin, he knew he’d have to get over whatever it was that held him back when thinking about being within hearing distance of anyone while they did it. They could start tonight.
The door opened and Kevin came in, shutting it firmly behind him. The catch for their door didn’t catch properly unless you pushed the door hard. Edd had discovered that earlier when he’d been changing into his pajamas. He hadn’t realized when the door had swung slightly open and Jake saw him in his underwear. Sure, the whistle Jake sent him was flattering, if insincere, but both Edd and Kevin didn’t want a repeat of that.
Kevin was already in his normal sleeping outfit – boxers and tank top – and padded over to the bed, shooting Edd a little smile. “You look comfy. Do you want the window open? There’s a nice breeze off the lake.”
“That does sound nice,” Edd agreed.
Kevin nodded and slid the window up. It was a nice breeze, cooling and smelling of water and faint traces of wood smoke from the fire pit Ben and Joel had started up. The group had spent most of the evening chatting and laughing around the fire, until well past midnight.
“Mmm, feels good,” Kevin said as he climbed onto the bed and snuggled himself to Edd’s side. “I set my alarm for a few minutes before sunrise,” he said, then kissed Edd’s cheek. His voice sounded sleepy and Edd felt his heart fill with love. “Wanna make sure not to miss it.”
“Thank you, my love,” Edd said. He’d been calling Kevin ‘my love’ since they’d started sleeping together. It felt unnatural at first, for Edd who never thought he would use terms of endearment. Certainly, he hadn’t in their whole time of dating. But Kevin seemed to enjoy it when he did, and ‘my love’ was easier to say than ‘babe’ or ‘baby’. Those simply would not come out of his mouth.
Kevin, who was strong, started moving Edd into the position they usually slept in – on their sides with Kevin spooning against Edd’s back and holding him so tightly it was like a koala hold. “What are you doing?” Edd asked.
“Going to sleep?” Edd could hear the confusion in Kevin’s tone.
“I thought you wanted to…”
“I thought you didn’t.”
“I may have changed my mind,” Edd said. “I have been listening to Eddy and Nazz for ten or so minutes while you were in the bathroom.”
Kevin sat up, but stared down at Edd with an incredulous expression. “Please tell me hearing them didn’t get you horny.”
“What? No!” Edd exclaimed. “No, it was not that!”
“Thank fuck!”
“Language!”
“Whatever.”
Edd wondered why Kevin looked put out at that, but he pushed on. “It did not make me desire you. At least, not really. It merely made me realize that we should not worry over who can hear us.”
“We shouldn’t worry?” Kevin asked with a frown. “You’re the one who worries about it. I don’t care who hears me.”
Edd chuckled, touching Kevin’s knee, then tracing a finger up along his thigh closer to his groin. “I know.”
Kevin’s agitation cleared from his face and he seemed to hold his breath as he watched Edd’s finger. “So, you think you don’t mind now?”
“I do not think I mind,” Edd said. “I would like to test the theory, however.”
“Test the theory?”
“Yes. See if my libido is affected when we make love, with the knowledge we are in a house full of people who will most likely hear everything we do.”
It took a moment for his words to sink in, but once they did, Kevin gave him a big grin. “I’ve always said I’ll be your willing test subject, Dee.”
“Then I shall try my best to seduce you, Kevin.”
“I don’t think you’ll have to try too hard.”
“Hard?” Edd asked, moving his fingers under the thigh hem of Kevin’s boxers. “Apparently I have no effect on you,” he said, pulling a sad face.
“Touch me and you’ll see what kind of effect you have.”
Edd tickled up the soft hair of Kevin’s inner thigh and reached the even softer skin of Kevin’s balls first. Kevin drew in a breath when Edd’s fingers touched his cock, which responded to Edd’s light stroking with his fingertips. “Like this?”
“Just thinking of you gets me hard sometimes.”
Edd grinned and pulled his hand free of Kevin’s boxers. Kevin gave a little whimper. “Lay back, Kevin. I want to pleasure you tonight.”
Kevin shifted and scooted around the bed until he was lying on his back with his head comfortably on the pillows. “I guess you could say ‘this morning’ since it’s late. And don’t worry, baby. You always pleasure me. You always make me feel good.”
Edd normally played the role of bottom, though they occasionally switched. Each of them liked to bottom and Edd found he did like to top sometimes. Something about this time made Edd want to top. He felt a certain power over Kevin, and a confidence that came from where he knew not. He guessed it was his decision to try this. Overcome his embarrassment and face his fear, and that made him feel in control. He wanted to carry that over to their lovemaking.
Without verbally responding, Edd hooked his fingers in the waistband of Kevin’s boxers and slowly pulled toward his feet. Kevin lifted his butt slightly to help, huffing a little chuckle when his cock popped free. “The wind is a little cold. Any way to warm me up?” he teased.
“I shall try to think of something,” Edd responded. He tossed the boxers to the floor and crawled to the side of the bed where he knew Kevin had placed his overnight bag. He suspected that Kevin had probably brought lube in the off-chance Edd would be amenable to sex. Sure enough, the toiletries bag had a small bottle. Edd fished it out and sat back on his heels, holding the bottle up and giving Kevin a look.
“What? A guy can hope, right?” he asked, giving Edd a cheeky grin.
“You had better hoped you would use it with me,” Edd chided.
“It’s only ever you, Dee.”
Edd crawled back to Kevin, nudging his legs apart so he could settle between them. Kevin watched, his eyebrows lifted, as Edd opened up the bottle. Edd caught his surprised expression and asked, “What, my love?” even as he squeezed lube onto his pointer finger.
“Are you topping?”
“Yes,” Edd said in a firm voice, his concentration on his fingers.
“Oh.”
“Do you not want me to top?” Edd asked, glancing at Kevin out of the corner of his eye.
“No! I mean yes! Yes, I want that!”
“Good,” Edd said, rubbing the gel on his finger to warm it a little. “For if you did not, then we would not do this and would just go to sleep.”
“Wait, you’d stop this if I wanted to top.”
“I would.”
“Damn, that’s hot.”
“Excuse me?”
“I like you taking control of me.”
“You do?”
“Mhm.”
Edd wasn’t unfamiliar with those aspects of sex, but he wasn’t sure if he could pursue them. Then again, he hadn’t been sure if he’d ever want sex in the first place, so maybe it was something he would enjoy. Kevin had mentioned perhaps Edd tying him up someday. He didn’t think he would like to be restrained himself, but if Kevin wanted it…
“You have mentioned being tied up before. Unfortunately, I did not bring any rope with me, and if you tell me you have that in your overnight bag…”
Kevin barked out a laugh. “No! I don’t!” His laugh abruptly cut off with a sharp intake of breath as Edd simultaneously took the tip of Kevin’s cock into his mouth and nudged his finger inside. “Fuck, Dee.”
Edd pulled off enough to murmur a “Shh…language” before returning to his task. Kevin valiantly tried to remain quiet as Edd both worked him open and worked on pleasuring his dick. There was, however, no way that Kevin could remain silent. He squirmed with the sensation and the effort, but when Edd added a third finger, well lubed, and connected with a press against Kevin’s prostate, that was it for Kevin.
“Fuck! Dee! Fuck!” followed by a long groan that had Edd popping off once again to shush him and admonish his language.
However, mid-shush and with his fingers still lightly massaging Kevin inside, he did a little shrug to his shoulders. They were testing out the effect of loud sex on his libido, and if the neglected hardness he himself had was any indication, Kevin’s audible noises weren’t bothering him. If anything, it gave him a small thrill of excitement to think that any of their friends could hear him pleasuring Kevin.
Little, mild-mannered nerd, indeed!
He returned his attention to the head of Kevin’s dick, having learned some time ago what Kevin was prone to like. Kevin often mentioned Edd’s way of twirling his tongue around the tip sent him into orbit, so that’s what Edd concentrated on doing. That and continuing the prostate massage, pumping his fingers in and out slowly, stroking firmly when pulling out. A thin sheen of sweat had broken over Kevin’s body and his inner thighs pressed hard against Edd’s upper arms. Edd loved the feeling of Kevin caging him in, holding him in place firmly, though it limited his arm movements somewhat. It did tell Edd non-verbally how good Kevin felt.
However, it wasn’t as if Kevin was not verbal, though most of the sound coming from his boyfriend wasn’t distinguishable words. Kevin had a hand pressed over his mouth to muffle the noise, but the moans weren’t stifled as well as could be. Edd had a feeling of wantonness wash over him and he found he loved it. Dorm room walls be damned. He was not going to hold back once they were in college.
“Fuck, Edd! Fuck, I’m close!”
As much as Edd wanted to see Kevin come, as much as he wanted to give that bliss to his lover, he popped off once again, leaving Kevin panting and whining at the sudden stop. With one last, slow and dragging stroke, Edd pulled out his fingers getting an “Nghhhh!” sound from Kevin. “Not yet,” he said in as stern a voice as he could muster.
“Wh-what?”
Edd met Kevin’s surprised stare. He was looking down his body at Edd crouched between his thighs, mouth dropped open, but eyes hazed over with hunger. “I do not want this to be over too soon, my love,” Edd said in a much gentler voice.
Leaving the secure space between Kevin’s legs, Edd scooted over to the edge of the bed and slipped off to pad over to his overnight bag. Using the hand that hadn’t been inside Kevin, he rummaged around until he found his ever-present wipes and brought the little package over to the side table. Kevin lay, head turned enough to track Edd’s every move, his body practically thrumming with want. Edd took his time, letting Kevin cool down slightly as he wiped his hand. He enjoyed fingering Kevin, but he always had to clean his hands after.
Kevin cleared his throat twice before managing, “A-are you coming back to bed?”
Edd realized he was still fully dressed. Kevin was the naked one, and oh, that was a turn on for him. He knew his boxers were tented in the front, but he hadn’t touched himself at all, wanting to concentrate on making Kevin feel good. He also knew that while he didn’t talk much during sex, he was loud. He first wanted to see how Kevin’s verbose exclamations during sex affected him.
“Of course,” he replied. “I merely wanted to wipe my hand.”
“Do I get to suck you off now?” Edd sensed a need in Kevin’s tone that made him smile. He loved that Kevin always seemed to want him as much as he wanted Kevin.
“I do not think so,” he said, and continued when he saw Kevin open his mouth to protest. “I want you to feel good tonight. I will have pleasure when I make love to you.”
Kevin huffed a small laugh, reaching up a hand. “Of course, you will, baby. Now come back in here and fuck me.”
“Language!” Edd chided, but didn’t grab Kevin’s hand. Instead, he stepped back, grabbed the hem of his t-shirt, and as slowly as he could, peeled it up and over his head.
Kevin whistled, leaning up on his elbows to get a better look. “I’m getting a strip show, too? You’ve never done that for me!”
“Shh,” Edd said, finally feeling a blush creep into his cheeks. He was unsure, however, if the blush came from the knowledge that Eddy and Nazz surely heard that, or if it was how hungrily Kevin watched him take off his clothes. Despite all of the confidence he’d gained and the knowledge that Kevin found him sexy, it was still hard to believe that.
“Pfft,” Kevin blew out. “Can you wiggle when you take your underwear off?”
“No,” Edd refused, simply opting to pull them down slowly, after he’d turned around, so Kevin got to see his butt slowly revealed.
“God I fucking love your ass.”
Edd paused, the waistband of his boxers halfway down his cheeks, and looked over his shoulder. “Language,” he repeated again. “Or I stop.”
“Oh, come on! You can’t expect me not to swear when you’re banging me!”
The laugh he felt bubble up turned into a throat clear. “Please do not ever refer to me as ‘banging’ you.”
“It’s just a phrase.”
Edd bent to pull the boxers all the way down, blushing even more now that his hole was exposed so lewdly to Kevin. He heard the covers rustle slightly and warned. “No touching.”
The curse whispered under Kevin’s breath brought a smile to his face and made the blush worthwhile. He kicked the boxers aside, for once foregoing neatness, and turned. It took his breath away to see how Kevin looked at him. His boyfriend obviously struggled to stay still; Edd could practically see him vibrating with the need to grab hold of Edd and drag him into the bed. When Kevin had that look, it brought out the basest of carnal desires in Edd.
“Please assume the position on your knees, Kevin.”
Edd knew Kevin loved this position. Edd had tried it himself, on his knees so that Kevin could take him from behind. There was a certain pleasure in the position. A sort of giving up of oneself, along with the heightened sense of not being able to see exactly what your lover was doing behind you. Edd preferred to see Kevin, however. At least, see his face. It was easier for Edd to judge if the things he did were right or felt good to Kevin. But Kevin loved being on his hands and knees, so Edd liked to oblige, only requesting partway through for Kevin to get on his back. He liked stroking Kevin with his hand as he made love to him, and Edd’s arms just weren’t long enough to do what Kevin called a ‘reach-around’.
Tonight, though? He would take it all the way. Since he hadn’t stimulated himself or let Kevin, he knew it would take some time to reach his own climax, so he was curious to see if he could make Kevin come without being touched. Edd had read it was possible, of course. Whether or not he could do it would make an interesting side experiment to the one he was already conducting.
“Yes!” Kevin exclaimed, eagerly flipping over and positioning himself, looking over his shoulder as Edd climbed back into bed. “I love it from behind.”
“I know you do, my love. That is why I plan on it this way.”
“You spoil me.”
“Not as much as you spoil me.” Edd had to search for the lube. Kevin must have kicked it to the side when he flipped over. When he’d shuffled his way between Kevin’s calves, pushing them further apart and widening the gap between Kevin’s thighs in a nice way, he put the lube down, intent on teasing Kevin just a little. To do that, he placed both palms in a way that covered the globes of Kevin’s butt. Kevin had the nicest butt, in Edd’s opinion. Not too fatty or plump, but well shaped, tight from Kevin’s workouts. The skin was paler than the rest of Kevin, which wasn’t saying much because Kevin had a lovely, ivory Irish skin tone. He’d tanned slightly over the past week before prom, carefully timing his bouts in the sunshine so as not to burn. However, it did not hide his freckles.
Kevin’s freckles fascinated him. As many times as he’d now seen Kevin fully naked, it was wondrous that the freckles covered every inch of his boyfriend’s body. Edd often teased him about taking a marker and making patterns in them, much to Kevin’s dismay. He wasn’t overly fond of his own freckles, until Edd had reassured him many times over that he absolutely loved them, and often spent long stretches of time trying to kiss every one.
“Are you gonna stare all day, or…?”
“I am just admiring you, my love. You have the nicest posterior,” he said. “And your skin is so soft,” he added, rubbing his hands in gentle motions over that skin.
“Mm, I’m glad you like.”
“I do love it.”
“My ass isn’t just for looking at, you know.”
Edd lifted a hand and brought it down with a smack and a muttered “Language…” before he realized what he’d done. Both he and Kevin gasped. That was seriously not like Edd at all, and Edd thought he’d briefly lost his mind. “Oh dear, Kevin! I am so sorry!”
There was a pale red mark on Kevin’s perfect cheek. Edd felt horribly guilty and couldn’t stop apologizing, but Kevin was laughing now. “It didn’t hurt, sweetheart. Just surprised me! Didn’t think you had it in you.”
“Had what?”
“Dom tendencies.”
“I do not!” he protested.
“That smack says otherwise.”
“I am so so so sorry. I do not know what got into me.”
“Don’t worry. I kind of liked it.”
“You did?” Edd wasn’t exactly surprised. Kevin did seem to have far more adventurous ideas for the bedroom than he had. Still, Edd didn’t think he could do much beyond that. This evening was turning out so much differently than he’d planned.
“Yeah,” Kevin said, looking again back over his shoulder. “Maybe smack me a few times when you’re fucking me?”
Edd felt a smile tug at his lips, but he forced them into a frown and lightly tapped Kevin’s other cheek with another “Language!” It wasn’t as hard a smack as the first – it didn’t leave a mark – but Kevin drew his breath in sharply.
“I’ll keep swearing if you keep doing that!”
“I shall stop if you keep swearing,” Edd threatened, knowing how that had worked a few minutes ago. Then, deciding to see what it would be like to be a little bossy with Kevin, he next said, “Put your forehead on your arms and stay there.”
Kevin gave him a surprised glance, but then quickly complied. It gave Edd a small thrill that Kevin obeyed him like that. He was positive he would never be able to be dominant to Kevin. At least, not in the way he had come to understand dominance in the sexual act. There were elements that appealed to him, especially if Kevin would enjoy it, but he wasn’t aggressive enough to do this consistently, but a little mild bossiness should not be too difficult.
“I do not want you to lift your head, Kevin,” he added. “I will pause every time you do.”
Kevin made a sort of strangled sound, a sort of groan and whimper at the same time. Edd applied the lube to himself and shuffled forward to get into position. He grasped Kevin’s left butt cheek with his hand, while his other held himself to guide in slowly. Entering Kevin always felt heavenly for him. Kevin’s muffled moans added to Edd’s pleasure.
Edd usually gave Kevin time to adjust, but something about tonight made him skip that. Maybe it was that Edd had thoroughly prepped Kevin. Maybe it was Edd wanting to give Kevin what it seemed he was wanting – a little aggressiveness and domination. Edd knew he wasn’t fully dominating Kevin, but he was happy to provide a little of the illusion of it.
He could tell Kevin was struggling – both with not swearing and with keeping his head down. When Edd topped in this position, Kevin constantly wiggled around, going between bent all the way with his head on the bed to being on all fours to a few times straightening up on his knees for a moment. The command to stay down was agitating him, but Edd could tell he loved it. If the sounds and words Kevin was spitting out were any indication.
Acting on impulse, Edd paused for a second to smack Kevin once more on his other cheek, producing another red mark and getting Kevin to lift his head with a cry. “Fuck, Edd!”
Another smack and another “Language!” in Edd’s sternest voice had Kevin whimpering. Edd couldn’t believe how much that sound turned him on. There did seem to be more to this domination scenario than he previously thought. Again, he knew it wasn’t something he could do often, but at least he could file it away for future reference. He was certain that he would not like to be spanked himself, but next time he thought he would encourage Kevin to spank him as an experiment.
“Edd, fuck me…” Kevin gasped.
“What did I say?”
“N-no swearing.”
“And?”
“H-head d-down.”
Edd didn’t say anything, nor did he move. He waited, letting Kevin calm himself enough to comply with the rules. His head went down with a whine and a muttered “sorry”.
“Good boy.”
Again, Edd surprised himself by saying that. Kevin whimpered, but Edd interpreted it as a pleasure-whimper, as opposed to a pain-whimper. Kevin must like praise and Edd remembered reading once that some people enjoyed that. He would have to keep that in mind, too. He was learning so much tonight!
After being admonished, then praised, Kevin behaved as Edd requested for the most part. He cut off his swears mid-word, and if Edd weren’t lost in his own sensations, he would have laughed. However, he was practically overwhelmed with how good it felt to make love to Kevin, and how it felt to have a little control over him. Kevin generally had a dominant personality, so this was an interesting development.
“Fuck! Edd!” Kevin cried, lifting his upper body up, stretching up on the tips of his fingers. “Fuck, I’m coming!”
Edd felt the squeeze as Kevin’s climax hit and he had to pause, marveling that Kevin had reached orgasm without touch. Edd himself had been close to that a few times, but he always needed manual stimulation to reach bliss. So had Kevin. Edd’s hands gripped Kevin’s sweat-slicked hips and held on, letting Kevin ride it out, happy to be patient, but something nagged in his brain, so he did something he didn’t think twice about. He pulled out slightly and pushed back in hard with a slap on Kevin’s cheek.
“Fuck!” Kevin shouted, another spurt landing on the covers accompanied another tight squeeze around Edd.
Edd shook his head, smoothing his palm over the new red mark on the freckled cheek. Kevin sunk his upper body back down to the bed, slumping over his arms with a groan. Edd pushed down on Kevin’s hips, encouraging him to lay face first on the bed, which Kevin did, letting Edd slip out of him.
Edd had not only seen this in one of the porn clips he watched for research, but remembered Kevin mentioning it once, and it looked like a good position. It wasn’t much different from the ‘doggy style’, but it looked more intimate. Straddling the back of Kevin’s thighs, he positioned himself once again at Kevin’s entrance and pushed in the looser hole. Once seated, he draped himself over Kevin’s back, kissing his shoulder blade, then continued with slow thrusting as he slid his upturned hands under Kevin’s arms to grip his shoulders.
The grip gave him leverage and the position was pleasurable. More so than the doggy one. Edd liked the skin-to-skin contact and the feeling of intimacy, though he would have rather looked Kevin in the eye. Kevin whimpered and groaned, now spent, but responding to the aftershocks from Edd’s continued thrusting.
Kevin’s orgasm had pushed Edd close to the edge, so it wasn’t more than a few minutes that he reached peak as well, ending his high-pitched squeaks with a loudly gasped “Kevin!” that surprised his lover. Edd rarely verbalized anything during sex.
The pair of them lay prone on the bed, Edd still draped on Kevin despite the sweat that usually made Edd cringe. He nuzzled his nose into Kevin’s damp hair and kissed the freckles dotting the strong back, smiling at the twinges of nerves under his skin. Kevin clenched his hole, getting a little moan from Edd. “That was amazing, Dee.”
“You were amazing, my love,” Edd praised him. Though he was exhausted, he pulled out and rolled to his side off Kevin. Kevin lifted up and rested his weight on his elbows, turning his head to meet Edd’s gaze. He leaned to the side to give Edd a chaste kiss. “Give me a moment and then I shall get up and get something with which to clean ourselves.”
“I can grab the wipes.”
“No, my love. You received and I want to take care of you,” Edd said, firmly so Kevin wouldn’t object. Usually Kevin was the one who took care of him.
“Do you want to shower?”
“I think I shall.”
“I’ll join you.”
Edd almost objected, but then nodded in agreement. He liked the way Kevin’s eyes lit up and reached up to caress a cheek. “And I shall not object if you would like to do anything in the shower.”

Sleep stole away from Edd slowly the next morning. He woke up as usual, locked in Kevin’s hold with Kevin’s warm breath tickling the hair on his neck. The sun was bright through the curtains and Edd could see by the analog clock on the side table that it was a few minutes to eleven. Goodness he had never slept in this long, even when sick. They had stayed up late the night before – or he should say that morning, because they spent a much longer time in the shower together than they should have. A slippery and soapy body was too much of a temptation and they made love once again in the shower, only back to their usual dynamic of Edd as bottom.
They also woke up to sleepily watch the sunrise, quietly tiptoeing down to the first floor and out to the deck. With arms wrapped around each other, they yawned their way as the sun painted reds and oranges on the lake and woke up the water birds, who fished for their breakfasts and sang their good mornings to the world.
Edd blinked a few times, reaching up to rub the crusties from his eyes. He didn’t hear any other sounds in the house, except for the cries of water birds outside – Kevin must have left the window open. There was also the sound of children laughing. Faintly, though, as if they were further down the beach from their borrowed beach house. The breeze, which had blown through their open window most of the night, had left the room chilled, but Edd felt warm from the blankets and Kevin’s body heat. He snuggled back into Kevin’s embrace, intent on trying to fall back asleep.
It did not come, however. Once Edd woke up, he usually stayed up and the thought stole into his brain that it might be nice to slip out of bed and make a late breakfast for everyone. Kevin had said he had brought ingredients for a simple meal, and Edd surmised, after watching their friends imbibe the evening before, that no one was likely able to cook anything, let alone breakfast.
He wriggled his way out of Kevin’s hold and gathered his clothes to head into their bathroom for a quick shower, keeping quiet because he couldn’t hear anyone else moving about the house. Everyone must still be asleep.
Edd was busy at the kitchen counter, cutting onions for the fried potatoes, when the first of the revelers stumbled into the kitchen. It was Jake, rubbing at his messy bed head and yawning. “Mm, do I smell bacon?”
“Good morning, Jake!” Edd said brightly. “And, yes, it is bacon that you smell!”
“Jesus, why are you so happy?” Jake grumped.
Edd chuckled, turning back to his task. “I guess I am just a morning person!”
“After all that noise all night?” Carla asked, coming into the kitchen. Edd glanced at her, feeling his cheeks flare at the statement. Carla looked her usual put-together self – beautiful and perfect. The only indication of a long night was her red shot eyes. She stood in stark contrast to Jake with his wild hair and bags under his eyes. “I thought you’d be the last one up.”
Jake laughed as Edd sputtered before being able to form a coherent sentence. “I slept in longer than normal,” he protested – a weak protest, to be sure. He certainly couldn’t deny what he and Kevin had done. Both of them had been loud.
“He was the last one ‘up’,” Jake teased, using finger quotes around the word. “Until Kevin took care of it.”
Carla backhanded Jake across the side of his head, getting an ‘ouch’ from him as he rubbed the spot. “Don’t be crude,” she said sternly.
Edd didn’t think he’d ever been so red in his life, but he surprisingly didn’t feel as mortified as he imagined he would be. He and Kevin surely weren’t the only ones who engaged in sexual activities the previous evening, so he wasn’t exactly embarrassed about it. He was blushing from the teasing, of course, and having it brought out into the open to discuss, but he wasn’t ashamed of it.
“It is alright,” Edd said, turning back to his task. “Kevin is always loud, and he was particularly…” he added, looking up as he tried to think of a word. He grinned, “…good last night.”
“You mean a good boy?” Jake asked.
Edd smiled down at the onions and made the last few chops to them and scraping them into the bowl with the already boiled potatoes. “You heard that?” he asked followed by a chuckle.
"We were right next door," Jake pointed out. They were. Kevin and Edd had the room between the rooms used by Nazz and Eddy, and Jake and Carla.
“Stop teasing, Jake,” Carla warned. “Or I’ll tell everyone you cry sometimes after sex.”
“I do not!”
“I’ll tell a little lie if I have to!”
“Carla!” he objected over Edd’s laugh.
“Jesus fucking Christ Sockhead!” Edd’s laugh continued over Eddy’s grumpy growl as his friend stomped into the kitchen, hair standing up in a bed head worse than Jake’s. “Thanks for keeping us up for half the night!”
“It is only payback for keeping us awake, Eddy,” he replied in a reasonable tone, though his cheeks were still pink. He dumped the heap of potatoes into the large pan he’d found in the kitchen, satisfied at the sizzle. “Your bed was in need of some WD-40 or something. All that squeaking kept us awake.”
“You did your messing around after us!”
“Yes, because we could not sleep, we decided to make use of our time.”
“Make use of your…what the hell?”
Edd merely shrugged as he bent down to check in the oven where he had an egg casserole baking. It seemed the easiest way to cook enough eggs for everyone.
“Anything we can do to help, Edd?” Carla asked.
“This is almost done,” he said. “Once the potatoes cook, I shall serve. Thank you, however.”
“Least we can do is set the table,” she said, giving Jake and Eddy a pointed look. Jake nodded, rubbing his eyes sleepily. He nudged Eddy and gestured to the sideboard where plates and utensils sat waiting. “I’ll go wake everyone,” Carla decided. “Or try to.”
Edd stirred the potatoes and felt the blush fade from his cheeks. That wasn’t too bad, he thought. It had been a little embarrassing, but no more so than normal teasing. It felt more like when he was the center of attention for any reason. It didn’t make him mortified to know the subject of teasing was that he and Kevin had sex. Or, that people had heard them engaging in the act. He smiled, turning down the heat a little on the stove and setting the spatula on the spoon rest. Time to make some toast.
He unearthed an eight-slot toaster from the cupboard, marveling at the size of the thing. He guessed it made sense, being a place that entertained many people, but this would certainly make Edd’s task move quickly. He set it up, fetched butter from the fridge, then returned to the stove to give the potatoes another stir.
As he pushed them around the pan, he felt arms come around his waist and the familiar scent of Kevin filled his nostrils. He leaned back into the warmth, turning his head enough to receive a kiss on his cheek. “Morning,” Kevin mumbled against his skin.
“Good morning, my love,” Edd said in a low tone. “Did you sleep well?”
“Always do next to you.”
“Mmm,” Edd hummed.
“Smells good.” Kevin’s voice was a little scratchy and sounded so sexy to Edd that he momentarily thought of abandoning breakfast for a more interesting activity. However, he had pushed his own limits so much the night before, he thought better of it. That, and the way his tummy rumbled, decided him. Breakfast it would be, but he would give in to temptation later once they were home.
“I am glad you picked up some groceries. I did not think I would be this hungry in the morning.”
“Well, we were up late,” Kevin said, nuzzling Edd’s neck, getting a little giggle. “And slept in. It’s almost noon, I think.”
“Just past. It feels a little strange to make breakfast for what essentially is lunchtime, but I do not think anyone will mind.”
“They’ll be happy for food.”
“Fuck, can’t you two get enough?” Eddy’s growl broke into their domestic contentment.
“Fuck off, dipshit,” Kevin said, tightening his hold of Edd.
“Language, Kevin,” Edd warned. He heard Kevin’s breath hitch slightly and Edd remembered their activities the evening before. “You are squeezing a little too hard,” he added, feeling flustered.
“What? No spanking?” Eddy asked, his grin sly.
Edd flushed as Kevin laughed, loosening his hold and stepping away. “You heard that?” he asked, unknowingly echoing Edd.
“What’s this?” Jake asked. He and Eddy had apparently finished setting the table. Ed and Sarah had also followed them into the kitchen.
“Kevin was being a bad boy,” Eddy teased.
Edd shot Eddy a glare. “On the contrary, Eddy. Kevin was quite a good boy last night,” he said. Then, knowing Eddy hated hearing about his and Kevin’s intimate details, added, “He required only a few spankings to behave.”
“Jesus, don’t tell me that shit!”
“Then do not tease us!”
“Oh my god, you were spanking Kevin?” Jake exclaimed. “I didn’t hear that part!”
“Not very much!”
”What the hell are you all talking about?” Sarah asked, looking at Edd with a confused expression. “I think I missed something.”
”Kevin’s a bad boy?” Ed asked. “I didn’t know you liked spanking people, Double D.”
“Alright, everyone out of here,” Kevin shouted. “Stop discussing our sex life! I have enough dirt on the rest of you, so get out!” He herded their laughing friends out of the kitchen before returning to help his blushing boyfriend dish out the food. “Those jerks don’t deserve any of this,” he growled.
Edd laughed. “Yes, they do,” he countered. “They are our friends, and it is nice to be included in their teasing.”
Kevin paused, his hands clenching the bowl containing the finished fried potatoes. “You don’t mind?”
Edd shook his head, grabbing the oven mitts so he could take the baked egg dish out of the oven. “I do not mind,” he said straightening up and putting the dish on the counter. “I shall come back for the bacon,” he decided, though he did take the sheet pans out of the oven as well and started to transfer the slices onto a plate.
“I’m kind of surprised.”
Edd glanced at him. “You are?” Kevin nodded, so Edd shrugged and said, “I guess my experiment was a success. I do not feel anxious that people heard us last night. Not that I want to share all of our intimate details, of course, but this was not as horrible as I feared. I am actually quite relieved.”
“You are? What was making you anxious?”
“I was mostly worried about college,” Edd answered, then seeing Kevin’s confused expression, continued, “I know we would want to be intimate often at school. However, I also know that dorms notoriously have thin walls.”
“Ah, I get it.”
“Exactly.” Edd put the mitts back on and smiled at Kevin. “I was worried that it might inhibit me, much as it was when my parents returned. However, it is a relief to know that I do not feel embarrassed. At least, not about the sex we had or what we did. Nor am I even upset that people know I spanked you.” Kevin’s blush was endearing. “I did blush from the teasing, but not from the subject of the teasing, if that makes sense.”
“It does.”
“So, my conclusion is that we shall happily enjoy sex at college. Not that I shall be too loud most of the time, but I shall not feel inhibited. I was worried it would be a long time between intimate moments with you.”
“I don’t think we have to worry about that,” Kevin said with a grin. He gave Edd a kiss on the cheek. “I can take the potatoes and the bacon,” he offered. “You get the egg thing.” With each in hand, Kevin headed toward the dining room, which was already buzzing with the chatter of their friends.
Edd picked up the hot dish, but paused, watching as Kevin disappeared, a dreamy smile on his face. He shook his head and sighed, but it was a fond sound. He had never felt so happy and contented. He had a man he loved who loved him back. He had friends – not just Eddy and Ed, but a friend group! He had a full and satisfying life at school and an exciting and new life to look forward to at college in the fall. With Kevin.
At this time last year, Edd was crying in his room because he had no one to ask - and no one had asked him - to junior prom. Though he tried to convince himself he didn’t care, he did. Edd was an unknown blip at his high school. Edd Vincent had two friends and absent parents. If you had told that crying boy that he would be part of a large friend group with people who accepted him and would laugh and joke with him, and tease him in the same way as Ed and Eddy teased him, he would think you were crazy.
Yet, here he was. The morning after prom at an after party, in a house full of those friends, still glowing from a night of making love with Kevin. He would be sad in a couple of weeks when school was over. He’d never imagined it, but now that his circumstances had changed, he knew he would be. A small part of Edd’s heart wished this could go on, but the next step was also going to exciting. A challenge, for sure, but one he’d face with Kevin.
They would still have the summer with their friends, at least. And Edd looked forward to all the plans they’d thought of the previous evening while laughing around the fire pit.
“Get in here, Dee!”
“Coming!” he called, feeling the blush when that particular word got a “Not again!” from Eddy and a burst of laughter from his friends. He laughed as he went to join the group.
