CHAPTER ONE
“Hurry! Give me that thing!”
“Don’t be so anxious! Hand over the money, first.”
Shinichi Kudo peered around the corner of the building, watching silently as the first man (roughly 160 cm, bald, wearing a suit) quickly raised a case, opening it to reveal about ¥100,000,000. The second man, the one he had followed to this spot, took the suitcase. The deal was completed, the first guy running off with what turned out to be a film of a company smuggling illegal weaponry.
‘That person is…’ Shinichi thought as he prepared to flee in order to report this incident to the police. However, he had not anticipated a third man, the tall, cold-eyed and silver haired one, to come up behind him.
“Your little detective game ends here!” He declared, striking Shinichi over the head with a metal (pipe? Bat? It was hard to tell). The high-school detective collapsed into the grass, blood beginning to drip down his face and onto the ground. He was just barely hanging on to his consciousness, hearing only bits and pieces of the following conversation between the two men in black. The things that stood out to him in particular, the things he definitely heard was:
“…new poisonous drug from the organization…” and “…no way that it can be detected on the corpse…”
Next thing he knew, there was the vague sensation of a pill being forced down his throat, and the men were fleeing the scene.
For a moment, all was still. Not a single sound, other than the muted music from the main part of the amusement park. Then, it hit him.
And it hit him hard.
Sweat leaked from every pore like a broken water line, turning into steam as his temperature skyrocketed. His heart raced, throbbing painfully. His skin began to itch as though he were covered in hives and it hurt it hurt it hurt.
His bones were melting he was so hot and he couldn’t breathe he couldn’t move he was dying all alone but he promised Ran he would catch up with her later but he was never going to see her again…
The teen screamed with all the air left in his lungs, and the world faded away.
‘Am I dead?’
After an undetermined period of time, Shinichi was able to drag himself back to wakefulness. He realized that he was breathing, and his heart was beating (both at an alarmingly high rate. His heart sounded like it was trying to break out of his chest. It certainly…felt like it would earlier…).
His eyes cracked open, but were of little use as the area was almost completely pitch-black, save for some lights in the distance. And while most of what he felt was pins and needles, there was the odd feeling of a weighted blanket covering his entire body. Of course, this caused him to attempt to shimmy his way out in order to free himself.
It took longer than he would’ve liked to admit, and in that time his nerves were almost back in their proper working order. He felt very strange, to say the least. Shinichi would have liked to think the poison didn’t work on him, but he had some doubts about that. The first order of business, though, was to get back to his house and then assess any symptoms he might be having from the drug.
He began to walk (his legs felt too small) forward, looking around for any nearby light source he could go to. He nearly entangled himself in a bush trying to find his way around in the dark (shouldn’t his eyes be adjusted by now?), but was eventually able to find a street lamp in the main area of the park, “Dream and Fairytale Land.” At least he knew where he was now! But…but…
Everything was so big! It was as though the whole place had quadrupled in size! And there were colors everywhere that he had never even seen before.
‘Oi, oi,’ he thought. ‘Did that drug cause me to hallucinate?’ It probably did, honestly. Well, all the more incentive to get home so he could sleep whatever this was off. Wait a minute, his clothes weren’t on him anymore! And…
He was covered in feathers.
