Ochako spells it out for Izuku why Bakugo is not only the worst romantic choice for him, but that he will be rejected because the boy actually doesn't like him at all. Hates him even. Izuku does not want to hear this and practically ends his friendship over choosing such a toxic partner. But he is rejected in the end and he realizes that Uraraka is probably right.
It hurts to acknowledge that your sense of self-worth is garbage because of your tormentor and that you want to forgive them so badly, even to the point of loving them. But sometimes you just have to accept that they don't really like you. That takes growth, that takes strenght, that takes honesty. It takes letting go of previous notions.
