Work Text:

When he had gone to live in the Hidden World with the light fury, Toothless thought his adventures were over. But that changed when he became a father. His three children were extremely adventurous and loved to explore. They also loved their father's stories about his life outside the Hidden World and his time in Berk and at Dragon's Edge; they were some the night lights' favorite stories.

🐉🐉🐉

"Tell us the story again, Dad," Blizzard said.

"The one about how you met, Hiccup," said Coal.

Cloudjumper laughed.

"You three have heard that story almost as much as you have the one about how I met Valka," he said.

"But Uncle Cloudjumper, it's one of our favorites," Midnight said.

"Alright," Toothless said. "I was just fifteen and on a night ride with the other dragons from my nest stealing food to take home."

"Because, if you didn't, the queen of the nest would eat you," Coal said.

"That's right, Coal, but don't interrupt. The other dragons liked when I came because I'm fast and never miss my target. But that night, something happened. I was shot down and crashed in the woods. I was scared and hurt and alone. That's when I met my best friend...though, at the time, I didn't know it. It was a Viking; young, about my age and he looked as scared as I was."

The night lights looked on excited. This was their favorite part of the story and Toothless knew it. It was also his favorite part.

"He cut me loose and slowly we became friends. Five years later, he became the chief of his village and I became the alpha dragon. Years later, I met your mother and came to live here."

"The last part's my favorite," Midnight said. "It's really romantic."

"It's mushy stuff," Coal said.

"Leave it to a girl to think something mushy is romantic," Blizzard said.

"Now boys," their mother said coming up to them. "Leave your sister be."

"Yes, Mama," Coal and Blizzard said together.

"Dad," Coal said, "can we meet your Viking friend?"

"I don't think so, Coal," Toothless said. "He lives outside the Hidden World and it's not safe out there for dragons."

"But...," Blizzard started.

"No 'buts'. Don't leave the Hidden World. You know that the most important rule."

"We know, Daddy," Midnight said.

"Daddy's girl," said Blizzard.

"Trouble maker," Midnight retorted.

Blizzard growled and jumped on her.

"That's enough!" Toothless said as he and his mate pulled their children apart. "Blizzard, what have I told you and Coal?"

"A true alpha doesn't attack a girl..." Blizzard threw a look at his sister "...even if she's asking for it."

"Come on, Blizzard," Coal said. "Let's go play."

"Wait for me," Midnight said chasing after her brothers.

"She's got your spunk," Toothless said to his mate.

"And the boys are as stubborn as you."

"That, Angel, comes from living among Vikings for over five years. They have...stubborn issues."

🐉🐉🐉

They boys wrestled with each other, growling playfully. Both were determined to become as strong as their father when they grew up. So they play fought everyday hoping to learn the skills that would make one of them Alpha.

"I want to play," Midnight said jumping around excitedly.

"Girls don't play fight or battle," Blizzard said.

"That's not what Mom and Aunt Stormfly say."

"Well Uncle Hookfang says different," said Coal.

"Don't tell me you've been listening to that muscle head," came a voice.

"Aunt Stormfly," Midnight said running up to the nadder.

The brothers looked at each other wondering how much their aunt had heard anything else they said.

"What are you three up to?" Stormfly asked.

"Coal and Blizzard are play fighting but they won't let me join in," Midnight said.

"Really?" Stormfly said looking at the brothers.

"Aunt Stormfly," Blizzard said quickly, "can you tell us about your human friend."

"That's a long story and your mother sent me to bring you three home."

"But we don't want to go home," Coal said.

Stormfly gently nudged the brothers.

"Come on," she said.

Grumbling, the boys headed back to their mother. Angel was busy tidying up the nest but looked up when her daughter ran up to her.

"Thank you, Stormfly," Angel said.

"Mommy," Midnight said, "Coal and Blizzard wouldn't let me play with them."

Angel shot her sons the "Mom" look.

"Boys, what did your father and I tell you about playing with your sister?" she said.

"'A family that plays together stays together'," Coal and Blizzard said. "Even if it includes your sister."

"Boys, be nice," Toothless said. "When I was your age, I would have been happy to have a sibling to play with, even a sister."

"But, Dad," Coal said, "Midnight doesn't play any of our games right."

"Then you two should play with her more so she can learn the right way to play your games."

Coal and Blizzard hated when Toothless did that. Dad Logic was extremely hard to argue against; just as hard as Mom Logic. They also knew that there was no wiggle room in it either.

"You can play with us," Coal said to Midnight.

"But only if you can keep up," Blizzard said.

It's not that Coal and Blizzard didn't like Midnight but, like most brothers, they didn't always want to play with their sister. Adding to things, Midnight was the youngest of the three. Try as she might, Midnight never could seem to keep up with her brothers.

🐉🐉🐉

Midnight was woken up by the sound of whispering. Looking up, she saw her brothers sneaking away from the nest. Getting up, she followed them.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

Her brothers looked back at her.

"We're going on an adventure," Coal said.

"And you can't come," said Blizzard.

"You know the rules," Midnight said. "Mom and Dad won't be happy when they find out."

"They're not going to find out," Coal said. "We'll be back long before they wake up. We're only going to the lake for an hour."

"And what if something happens?"

"Then...tell Mom and Dad and I'll take responsibility."

Coal was the oldest of the three and often took responsibility for the trouble they got into. With that Coal and Blizzard ran off so quietly that Midnight couldn't help but think that they had gone off like this before. Knowing her brothers, they probably had.

Shrugging, she snuggled back down in the nest and went back to sleep. Her brothers would either get back before their parents woke up and get away with it or they wouldn't and get in trouble. It didn't matter to her. If her brothers got in trouble, it would serve them right for sneaking off.

🐉🐉🐉

Midnight woke up to find it was still night and her brothers weren't back yet. A quick glance at the moon told her that it was midnight, an hour and a half since her brothers left. They should have been back by now.

They are going to be in so much trouble when Mommy and Daddy find out that they snuck off, she thought.

But she couldn't help but think that her brothers had gotten themselves into some kind of trouble. She looked at her parents who were still asleep and half debated waking them up. If her brothers were in trouble, their dad would be able to get them out of it. But, if they were on their way home, she didn't want them to get in trouble.

You two owe me big, she thought as she left the nest.

Being as quiet as she could, she made her way past the sleeping dragons. Several dragons stirred but none woke up. Even Hookfang, who was suppose to be on guard duty, was asleep. Midnight slipped past him and made her way to the lake. She was going to find her brothers and give them a talking to just like their parents would.

"Midnight, stay back," Coal said when Midnight got close.

Stopping in her tracks, Midnight saw her brothers incased in amber. That meant only one thing: a Death Song was nearby.

"Go back to the nest, Midnight," Coal said. "Get Mom and Dad. Hurry!"

A strange sound began to rise up. Not wanting to wait and see if it was the Death Song, Midnight turned and ran back to the nest. She knew that she needed help and there was only one dragon she could turn to.

"Daddy! Daddy!" she called running towards the nest.

Toothless and Angle looked up as their daughter ran up to the nest.

"Midnight, what's wrong?" Toothless asked.

"A Death Song. It's down by the lake. It has Coal and Blizzard."

"Angel, get Stormfly and Cloudjumper."

As his mate went to get their friends, Toothless and his daughter made their way to the lake.

"Stay here," Toothless told Midnight.

His daughter stayed right where she was told while Toothless made his way down to the lake to confront the Death Song and rescue his sons.

"There are rules if you want to be here," Toothless said.

"Toothless," the Death Song said. "The human's pet."

"I'm alpha now," Toothless said. "You can stay here but you have to do as I say."

"I follow no one."

With that, the Death Song lunged at Toothless.

"Daddy!" Midnight called.

However, Toothless had been in many scraps with Hiccup and knew what to do. Dodging out of the way, Toothless took to the air.

"Get him, Dad!" Blizzard called.

The Death Song attacked again but Toothless was too fast. With a well placed plasma blast, Toothless managed to bring the Death Song down.

"You have two choices. Obey my laws or leave," Toothless said.

The Death Song got to it's feet and flew away never to be seen in the Hidden World again.

"You got him, Dad," Coal said as Cloudjumper and Stormfly broke him and Blizzard out of the amber.

The brothers brothers ran up to their father but stopped short when he gave them an unhappy and stern look (one he had learned form both Hiccup and Stoick). They knew they were in trouble.

"Dad, we're sorry," Coal said.

"Let's go home," Toothless said.

🐉🐉🐉

Angel had stayed at the nest in case the Night Lights came back. When she saw her family, she ran up to them.

"My babies," she said licking Coal and Blizzard.

"Mom, you're embarrassing us," Blizzard said.

"That's my job."

Toothless cleared his throat to get his sons' attention.

"I'm very disappointed in you two," he said.

"We know," Coal said.

"You both could have been killed."

"We know," said Blizzard.

"Do you have any idea how worried your father and I were?" Angel said.

The boys looked at the ground and didn't respond.

"You both know better than to leave the nest at night. Even here it can be dangerous," Toothless said.

The boys still didn't respond. They knew not to.

"One week restricted to the nest."

"What about her?" Blizzard said looking at Midnight. "She left the nest at night, too."

Toothless thought a moment.

"Three days restricted to the nest," he said.

"But that's not fair," Blizzard said.

"It is. Midnight's being punished for punished for leaving the nest at night. But, if she hadn't, you tow would still be at the mercy of the Death Song."

The boys knew better than to argue. They also knew better than to complain about their punishment. They did break the rules so they had to take their punishment. Growing up sure was hard.

Notes:

I know that the Light Fury and Night Light's have names but I was calling them Angel, Coal, Blizzard, and Midnight since Hidden World came out.
