Miku looked down at the bed beneath the both of them, her brain short-circuiting at the reality of the situation. She looked back up at Rin to see an equally dazed expression.
The blonde girl’s eyebrows turned down in a mix of frustration and denial, a cherry red blush lighting up her face. She inhaled, seeming to calm down momentarily, until she exhaled a hotel-staff-alarming,
“SCREW YOU LEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!”
Having let her momentary aggression out, Rin’s anger began to turn to nerves bubbling in her chest. After all, sharing a bed with a girl who she had been feeling all giggly and weird around was NOT her idea of a restful night.
“W-well, the flight leaves early again tomorrow, we should probably get some sleep..” Miku stammered, desperately searching nearby cabinets for a spare set of blankets.
The teal-haired girl fumbled around before finding a spare set of sheets and a comforter, and began to lie the thick fabric on the ground. She took a pillow from the bed adjacent to her little fort as well and fluffed it up anxiously before sitting criss-cross on the floor.
“Hey Meeks…?” Rin cocked her head to the side.
“…yes?” The girl below her responded coyly.
“What are you doing…?” The blonde girl folded her arms.
“I’m making a bed for myself.”
“No, if anyone taking the floor it’s gonna be me.” Rin furrowed her eyebrows and puffed up her cheeks.
“That’s ridiculous, you worked so hard today! Seriously- you deserve the bed after that note you had to hit in Meltdown.” Miku mirrored the blonde’s stance.
“No, because at the end of tomorrow’s show you have to sing The Disappearance of… well… you and Los Angeles hasn’t seen you since Mikunopolis! They’re gonna want an encore and you need to rest up for that.” Rin huffed, concerned for her… “friend’s” lack of self preservation.
The girls stared at each other momentarily, inadvertently inching closer. Stuck in her own thoughts, Miku just happened to notice Rin’s bangs falling out of their usual clip, and carefully reached her hand out to push them back out of the blonde’s eyes. Rin’s eyes widened, a soft blush spreading on her cheeks, before tentatively feeling the spot where the girl across from her had touched.
“Well we could always just…” Miku trailed off.
“Just… what?” Rin followed expectantly.
A furious blush raced across Miku’s face, and the blue haired girl shook her head furiously.
“Never mind! It’s stupid.” Miku turned to look at the wall, both girls now kneeling on the makeshift bed.
Rin looked straight at Miku, making the other girl glance back at her more than a few times in anticipation. Meanwhile, the blonde wondered if what she was about to say was going to cause the conversation to take a steep downward spiral, her red face growing darker in embarrassment.
“You were…” Rin trailed off a bit as Miku had done earlier. “You were gonna say we could uh- just.. share.. right? Not that I want to or anything!! But not that I don’t like the idea!! But not that-“ Rin cut herself off that time, looking directly at Miku once again. “Just… yeah. Um- if you want. I’m taking the floor if not.”
Miku stared back at Rin in stunned silence, a wide-eyed wild smile threatening to take over her face, instead suppressed to be a smaller grin.
“Yeah. I think I’d like that.” Miku chose to say, thinking something a little closer to “She’s really close to my face still.. was she gonna kiss me? Would she wanna kiss me? I’d let her kiss me.”
Suddenly, Rin stood up straight, adjusting her bow and combing through her hair nervously with her fingers.
“I’m gonna go put my pajamas on, move your blankets to the bed, they look soft.” Rin awkwardly spoke, shuffling out of the room to the bathroom.
Miku sat in a mixture of anxiety and excitement, heart racing at the implications of the blonde’s words. Slowly, she picked up the blankets lying on the floor and whipped them in the air to cover the bed. With nothing left to do except wait, she flopped down onto the mattress, shifting onto her back after finding that position uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Rin had finished putting her pajamas on, wearing a comfortable top with yellow dotted sweatpants.
“Your turn.” Rin gave Miku a thumbs up, signaling to the bathroom.
Rin chose the left side of the bed, pulling the covers up and trying to find the best pillow. She sunk down into a particularly comfortable one, waiting for Miku to return.
When Miku returned, she was wearing a similar outfit to Rin’s that bore a more similar resemblance to her iconic blue and gray costume. The blue haired girl took a closer look at Rin, seeing something off with her hair once again.
Rin blushed at the eye contact, sinking farther down into the mattress. Miku shuffled around in her suitcase on the ground, before pulling out a white clip. Miku approached the girl across from her, leaning over the bed- and Rin in an accidentally romantic position.
Rin’s face turned deep red once again, leaning back a bit. Miku reached for her golden bangs, brushing them to the side of her face and clicking in the clip. Rin noticed the way Miku’s tongue stuck out of her mouth just slightly to the side, and smiled at the cute expression.
Miku’s eyes suddenly widened, and she jumped back like a spooked cat. “I-I’m sorry! I just wanted to make sure your bangs swooped to the side again like you usually do them. It looks pretty when you do… not that you aren’t pretty all the time- just-“ Miku blushed furiously, waving her hands madly in front of her.
Rin, however, was stuck on Miku’s very last sentences.
“You… you think I’m pretty…?” Rin pressed, moving to sit on her knees in suppressed excitement.
“Well, of course I do… is that… normal?” Miku stammered, averting her eyes from the blonde’s intense stare.
Rin didn’t reply, instead standing up and quickly stepping over to Miku. Slowly, she raised her arms, as if not quite sure what to do with them, and pulled the taller girl into a tight hug. Miku kept her arms at her sides, unable to move them with Rin’s keeping them tight there. Her heart began to jump erratically in her chest, as the familiar fluttery feeling began to make itself apparent. Rin felt this, and leaned her head down onto Miku’s shoulder, pulse increasing to a similar pace.
“I want to hug you like this forever… and I want you to want it too… is that normal..?” Rin mumbled into Miku’s shoulder.
Miku shifted her arms out of Rin’s hold, which caused the blonde to reel in disappointment, until Miku wrapped her arms around Rin’s waist and placed her head on the other’s shoulder in a similar manner to before.
“I want the same thing, and maybe while it doesn’t make me feel normal…” Miku moved her head back to face Rin. “but maybe normal is overrated. You make me feel weird things, but a good weird.” Miku moved her head a bit closer to Rin’s, eyes flitting down to the blonde’s lips.
Rin took the initiative, and quickly pressed her lips against Miku’s experimentally. Miku’s eyes opened wide, both girls able to hear their hearts pounding like kick drums.
The weight of what had just occurred finally began to set in on Rin, and the blonde flopped backwards onto the mattress behind her to process it all, inadvertently pulling Miku down with her. Miku swiveled to the right side of the bed, keeping a hand on Rin’s waist.
“So, does this make us..” Miku began, moving her hand to Rin’s shoulder.
“..girlfriends? Is that really ok for you?” Rin finished, frowning and turning on her side to face Miku.
“Of course it’s okay!! I like you more than anyone else I’ve ever liked before. Unless it’s me that isn’t okay. Oh god, is it me? I’m sorry I thought that-“ Miku was cut off by Rin cupping her hand over the girl’s mouth and puffing up her now flushed cheeks exaggeratedly.
“Just… god I really, really like you too Meeks. You know what? I’ll prove it. Sit up quick.” Rin moved to her knees, allowing Miku a minute to shift to sit against the wall.
Rin was in Miku’s lap at this point, and both girls were over the moon realizing it. Miku looked at Rin pensively, unsure of anything but her chest’s burning feeling. Suddenly, Rin placed a kiss on Miku’s cheek, followed by another on her opposite cheek, and once more on her forehead.
The girl continued to kiss Miku’s face, the blue haired girl melting into a goofy smile from the contact. Rin’s hands moved to wrap around Miku’s shoulders, continuing to kiss Miku’s face anywhere she could until both girls had dark red covering their faces.
Rin breathed a bit heavier now, her eyes only halfway open as the nighttime started to set in. Miku noticed this, and gave Rin one last hug before turning off the light next to them.
“I… I love you… Rin. I think I have for a long time. I know this kinda just happened… but I wanted you to know.” Miku stated, moving her head down onto a single pillow and lying flat on her back.
Rin moved down as well, laying her head on a pillow next to Miku and slinging her arm over the other girl’s waist.
“I love you too Meeks, I really do. And I’m glad I can finally say it out loud to you.” Rin shut her eyes, tightening her hold around the girl next to her, inadvertently burying her face under Miku’s shoulder.
“Goodnight, Rin.” The blue haired girl whispered.
“Goodnight…” The blonde mumbled back.
And somewhere in that very same hotel, a certain blonde haired boy had the urge to text his sister “I knew it” for no reason in particular.
