    Summary

The biggest difference between Tol Eressëa and the Shire, Frodo discovers, is that living on Tol Eressëa comes with the possibility of running into notorious elves who died thousands of years before he was even born. Celebrimbor was never anything more than a name in a history book to him, until the living, breathing elf walks through his garden gate.

“Yes,” Bilbo said. “And if you regret that, then I may be allowed a regret as well of a similar sort.” He reached out and touched Celebrimbor’s hand. “I regret that Sauron used your works against you. That must surely have been hard to bear.”

Celebrimbor’s eyes widened, as if that had not been at all what he’d been expecting Bilbo to say. “Yes, it was,” he said, in a voice filled with memories of times long past.

“I make a bit of poetry myself, now and then,” Bilbo said, and it was far more of a matter-of-fact statement than he usually made. No self-deprecation, no pride, no implicit offer to show off some of that poetry. He leaned forward to stir the tea, although Frodo could see that he kept a sidelong gaze on Celebrimbor. “Hardly on the same level, you might say, but I know I’d certainly hate for the Enemy to get hold of it, and set my words to his music, or some such.”

Celebrimbor kept staring at him, now with a look of wonder dawning on his face, as if he were recognizing an old friend or long-lost relation. “Yes,” he said. “Yes, that’s…you have my appreciation, Bilbo Baggins. For understanding.”
