Chapter Text
The Crucible of Souls is built by Melkor and his servants at some time in the Years of the Trees, when the Dark Lord decided his enslavement of elven souls as orcs was going to be a long-term, large-scale project.
It is destroyed in the first decade of the Fourth Age.
The destruction of the Crucible of Souls is a great deed, a deed immortalized in songs: The Liberation of the Lost Ones, Journey to the Prison of Fire, Redemption.
This is not one of those songs.
A detailed and serious account of the quest takes up fully a third of the first edition of A History of Orcs.
This is not that account.
This is the story of the Road Trip From Hell.
Also the Road Trip To Hell.
Also arguably the Most Awkward (Series Of) Reunion(s). There's stiff competition, but this is a contender.
The story of the Fellowship of the Dynamite, except the fellowship part is a little questionable and they don't call it dynamite.
Or maybe call it a story about un-giving up. Not about not giving up, but about having given up, and then changing your mind.
Or call it 'the Crucible Job'.
Or call it The Rescue of the Unforsaken. Whichever.
