Radio Silence

Summary:

ON HIATUS

Midoriya Izu was four years old when her life was ruined forever. She's diagnosed quirkless. Her father leaves, her best friend turns against her. And then an accident takes her mother.

Foster care is not a good place for a disabled, quirkless kid. Only Present Mic's radio show can bring any semblance of comfort.

What happens when Izu sends a distress call into the show?

Chapter 1: The Accident

Chapter Text

A month before the accident, her mother took her to a simple doctor's appointment. Izu didn't mind going to the doctor, her mom always let her bring her All Might doll along. She's not sure why they are doing the weird bone picture thing on her feet, but she doesn't mind. It doesn't hurt like the shots she sometimes gets. When that's done, she sits with her mother as the doctor talks.

"I'm sorry ma'am, but she will never develop a quirk."

What?

The doctor and her mom keep talking, but Izu is lost in her thoughts. How will she be a hero with Kacchan if she doesn't have a quirk? She's supposed to get a cool quirk like her best friend and then they'll be Japan's mightiest hero duo! How will she do that without a quirk?

Three weeks before the accident, her dad packs a bag. He's gone on business trips before, so Izu isn't too worried. Her mom is upset though. Izu can't really understand what they're saying through her cracked door, but her mom sounds really sad.

"If you knew what was good for you, you'd leave her and come with me!"

Her dad sounds really mad too. Izu goes to the door to peek out.

"She's our daughter!"

"She's not my daughter. Not anymore."

Her dad slams the door on his way out.

He doesn't come back.

Two weeks before the accident, Kacchan calls her a mean name. They are playing at the playground when he suddenly pushes her over into the sandbox, the other kids laughing.

"You can't play with us anymore, Deku ." Everyone laughs. "You're useless now, just a dumb Deku!"

She tries to keep playing with him, but it always ends with her on the ground. He keeps saying mean things, and the other kids join in. Even the teachers start treating her differently. They don't stop the other kids from hurting her. Sometimes, they even tell them they did a good job.

Izu doesn't tell her mom, though. She doesn't want Kacchan to get in trouble.

One week before the accident, Izu's mom says they are gonna go on a trip. She starts packing up their things and tells Izu to pack only her most favorite toys. So, Izu set to work organizing her dolls and picking out her favorite two. She of course grabs All Might first. Then she grabs Present Mic, his radio show being something she loves to listen to when she can't sleep. Mom doesn't know about that though. She puts both dolls safely in her backpack and goes to show her mom.

"Good job, Izu, Baby. You know Momma loves you, right? That I'll always love you?"

"Of course, Momma! I love you too!" She beams up at her mother. Her mother tears up and grabs her, hugging her close.

The day of the accident, Izu and her mother climb aboard the train out of Musutafu. Izu holds the straps of her backpack and follows her mother to their seats. She's very excited since she's never ridden the train before! Her mother takes the window seat, but lets her climb over to look out the window.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we will now exit the station out of Musutafu."

"This is so exciting, Mama! Where are we going?"

"It's a surprise, Baby. But I'm sure you'll like it." Her mother smiles at her. Tears are in the corners of her eyes, but Izu barely notices, too busy having fun.

They don't make it far.

The train is only a few kilometers from the station when a villain attacks, throwing the train off the rails. All Izu remembers from the accident is the sound of crushing metal, the heat from all the fires, her mothers body shielding her, and the world going quiet when she hits her head, blacking out.

Midoriya Inko is pronounced dead at the scene. Her body is found covering her child, shrapnel piercing her back, blood pooling around her. The shrapnel went all the way through her and nicked her daughter who lay unconscious beneath her. Those on scene stated that it took several hours to find the pair and that the mother probably bled out.

Midoriya Izu was rushed to a hospital a few kilometers into the city. There it is discovered that she sustained a severe traumatic head injury, resulting in the severing of the nerves in her ear. Surgery was able to fix some of the damage, but she was still diagnosed with profound hearing loss and recommended for hearing aids.

Given that her mother was killed in the accident and her father abandoned her just weeks ago, Izu was immediately put into foster care. Goodbye to a happy home filled with warmth and love and hello to years of moving from home to home just wishing for something permanent. Goodbye to the days of a mother who loved and cherished her unconditionally and hello to people who couldn't care less about her and ship her off at the first opportunity.

What is she supposed to do now?
