You know, there are moments in your life when you almost question everything that happens around you.
When everything seems like it is aimed at you and you feel like you are being targeted.
Well today was one of those moments for me. At the beginning, everything was going perfect. It felt like everything had finally fallen into place for me.
Desi and Mac had finally decided that they didn't work in a relationship and that everything that they were doing was toxic and not good for them at all. Thankfully the decision was mutual and neither one of them were upset by this so they stayed good friends.
Because of this Desi and I got extremely close and became best friends which was very surprising, meaning she found out about my feelings for Mac extremely quickly. Which she was actually really supportive of and told me to pursue them.
Taylor had finally accepted Parker as an employee of the Phoenix and was starting to accept her as a close friend, with the persuasion of Matty after 7 bossy yet demanding 'debriefs'.
Bozer had been spending all of his free time with Mac and I, making sure that every adventure and every memory that we had was filled with him and his 'interesting' (terrible but we love him anyway)jokes.
And finally Mac and I. We were the closest we have ever been. Meaning he always came over to mine in the evenings with take-out, and we would even be staying over at each other's houses sleeping in the same bed. As it got too late to go home because we would binge watch Die hard 24/7 and be laughing our heads off.
Everything and everyone fitted into this perfect life that I had created in my mind and I was truly honoured and blessed to have these people in my life.
However everything came crumbling down after one stupid phone call. We had all been in a mission brief getting ready to go undercover into a criminal affair that the government was having 'problems' with dealing with. We were dealing with the details now so tomorrow we could leave as soon as possible.
Matty was explaining some important details when my phone suddenly went off. "Ahh sorry Matty can I take this quickly" She didn't look impressed but she gave me a quick nod and told me to put it on speaker.
"Hello, who is this?"
The voice on the other end was very shy and innocent which I quickly took into account with my tone of voice
"Hi, am I speaking to Riley Davis"
I looked around instantly and caught Mac’s facial expressions. He was nodding his head and mouthing 'be careful riles, no'
"That depends on who's asking" My voice was very shaky at that point for some reason however I tried to steady it as quickly and quietly as possible.
There was a long pause before the voice on the other end spoke again. I instantly registered that it was a female voice that sounded around my age.
"Ummm...well if this is Riley then I was calling because I'm Audrey's current girlfriend and I just wanted to ask you something about him, as I know that you are his ex"
Wow!! I was not expecting that at all, which everyone could tell by my facial expression. Mac's body language instantly changed, having his posture straighten and coming over to stand closer to me.
"I just wanted to ask you if he ever told you something while you were living together?"
I was extremely confused about that statement and it made me dart my eyes around the room at everyone quickly before landing on my phone.
"Told me what..... exactly?"
"What's she talking about?" You could tell by bozer's voice that he was starting to get impatient and a little concerned. My eyes connected to his and I tried to calm him down as hard as possible.
"Well, while you were away on your business trip, Aubrey and I met in a coffee shop. And first it was friendly and just light conversation..... and then we met a couple more times, and something.... kinda.... happened."
Echoes of sharp gasps and whispers of "What's" bounced of the walls in the room and I was paralysed. I couldn't breathe. Was I seriously finding out that he cheated on me with the girl that is telling me now!!!!!!. Two years after we broke up!!!.
My plan was to act like I didn't care about this particular piece of information that I had just learnt, as I didn't like everyone seeing me with emotions.
"OK. Why are you telling me this now. So he cheated on me with you. So what. My relationship with him was 2 and a 1/2 years ago and I'm much happier without him. To be honest I had feelings for my best friend while being in that relationship so technically I was emotionally cheating on him".
Looking over at Mac I could tell that he wasn't believing me one bit that I wasn't heart-broken by this, and honestly he looked kinda shocked after what I had just said about my feelings for him.
"Oh ok, well I just wanted to call you and talk to you as I just found out myself that he was dating you when we met up, so I didn't know that he wasn't single. I'm so so sorry about what I have done to you, I extremely hate myself for it and wish it never happened" I could tell by her tone of voice that she was being serious and I felt bad for her more than I think I should off.
I could feel Mac’s hand slowly stroking up and down my right arm from behind, and his other resting on my lower back which was making by legs weak. His chin was resting on my shoulder so I could hear his breathing and feel his intakes of breath on my neck. I was struggling big time with this position right now, but I didn't want to make it obvious so I leaned into his front calming my heartbeat.
"Hey, hey, don't worry about it at all OK. You didn't know about my relationship with him so please don't put any blame on yourself. You seem like a nice girl and I don't hate you for any of this"
I could feel everyone's eyes on me but I didn't want to look up from my phone as they would tell instantly that I was lying. I finally ended the phonecall 5 minutes later with a promise that this girl and I would meet up and talk in person in a few weeks time.
"Riley... Are you ok? Would you like to go home?" Matty sounded like a concerned mother which was so sweet and I really wished that I could thank her in that moment, however I just wanted to leave everyone's concerned eyes as fast as possible.
"Yeah I'll see you all tomorrow, I just need some space and time to understand all of this new information you know..." I was laughing on the outside but crying and breaking down on the inside. I quickly moved myself away from Mac’s comforting hold and walked out of the room as quickly as possible, leaving my calm composure behind.
