Alex grabs both his hands as Henry steps in front of him, squeezing hard. They lock eyes, and Henry searches his dark brown irises, taking note of the amber flecks that make an appearance in the light of the setting sun, and finds all of the emotions that he feels flooding his own chest—excitement, joy, anticipation, love.
Alex leans in close and whispers to him, “You ready for this baby?”
Henry smiles softly back at him. “Since the day we met, love,” he whispers in reply.
They opted to keep their vows simple. Henry didn’t want the added stress of public speaking, so they exchanged handwritten letters before the ceremony, and used standard vows about loving and cherishing each other until death do they part. When they were finally pronounced husbands, they both surged forward at once, sinking into a long, deep kiss as their family cheered around them.
Henry’s family was still figuring out how they fit together. But as Henry held Alex in his arms, the smooth, familiar voice of Elton John filling their ears as they swayed slowly, he felt that an essential piece had slotted into place.
