Flickering Lights

Miami reacted on instinct as she swiftly deactivated his quirk. As the secondary aspect to her quirk flared to life, her carefully styled hair rose quickly and hovered above her head, likely messing up the artful style her foster father created that morning. The hero was loud even without his quirk activated.

She could hear the man in front of her heart fluttering widely in his chest, but he didn’t say anything, his hands clutching his chest as if he had seen a ghost. Not an uncommon reaction to the cancellation aspect of her quirk. At least he wasn’t trying to attack her, she thought wryly.

Chapter Text

Maimi wanted to get up off seat and leave the moment she heard the word “robots” bellow from the ridiculously loud man orchestrating this nightmare. His voice was obnoxious, grating and full of delight as it echoed in the hall filled to the brim of UA hopefuls.

Quirk: Voice Amplification. Allows user to increase the volume of their voice to up to 175 decibels. Creates vibrating distortions in the air. Originates in vocal cords. Users physiology is not adapted to accommodate potential sound damage.

Her own quirk helpfully told her the moment she sat down. Clearly, the man loved to hear himself speak. She smirked as he failed to generate excitement as no one responded to him.

Her small moment of pettiness fell quickly as she was reminded of the task before her.

Robots. Robots. The entrance exam to UA high was - of course - biased towards physical quirks.

It wasn’t fair.

But neither was life.

Maimi knew life wasn’t fair. She knew that very intimately as she sat in her thin, threadbare clothing. She knew that from the painful cramping on her ever-empty stomach. She knew that from the dull ache she felt as she sat down on the harsh seating. She knew that from the sarcastic and mocking ‘good luck’ she received this morning from her foster father and mother.

She fucking knew that as she directed her useless, broken eyes blankly ahead at nothing but darkness as she adjusted the spectacles on her face.

A light within the radar of her quirk leapt up abruptly as one of the UA hopefuls stood to speak. Her own quirk responded by hammering information inside her head involuntarily.

Quirk: Engine. User manifests engines in their calves providing increased speeds up to 130 miles per hour. Orange juice required to function. Engines may overheat and stall when used in excess or pushed at limit. Susceptible to damage at rapid changes in temperature or at extreme temperatures.

Engine boy shouted about something being different from the pamphlet and how outrageous it was. Wow.  Maimi fingered the pamphlet she was helpfully handed earlier, bending it into odd shapes. What was she going to read it? She can’t believe they gave the little blind girl something to read. UA was informed of her… disability… and had accommodated her during the written portion. The idiot with the Somnambulist quirk clearly wasn’t paying attention when she has handed paper.

Miami ripped the pamphlet between her fingers idly.

She didn’t need to see it. She didn’t need to be able to see to be a hero. She could see very well on her own with her quirk, thanks. She could see colours in her mind, colours which represented the different people – the different quirks of those around her. Those colours reflected onto surfaces around them, allowing her to identify objects and manoeuvre around her. The radius of her quirk was getting wider and wider, she could see everyone in this hall and the surrounding rooms.

Eventually loudmouth stopped talking and the UA hopefuls were directed by being given a small card, which apparently had a letter which identified their battle city for the practical portion of the test.

Fucking idiots.

It took Miami longer than she cared to admit to swallow her pride to muster up the courage ask someone around her, to read it for her. Don’t admit your weakness. No one can see your eyes through the coloured lenses, apparently. But everyone fled out the room in a rather unorderly fashion and she didn’t feel like confessing her disability to those around her. She wasn’t weak.

Miami noted that all the students were rapidly filling onto busses outside the building and a jolt of panic washed through her.

Fuck the only one nearby was the loudmouth.

Miami picked up her walking stick or ‘mobility cane’ from beside her and darted down the now empty seats and barren hall towards the podium on silent feet, her slightly enhanced hearing helping her stay silent. She heard the shuffling of papers of the loudmouth in front of her. She gently slipped her glasses off her face so he could see her creepy, milky, lifeless eyes everyone told her she possessed. She made sure to turn off the radar aspect of her quirk as she was told it made her eyes glow a faint blue.

Miami approached the hero that had just outlined UA's practical exam,

“Excuse me”

“-WWHAAA...aaaaaaaatttttt” Loudmouth screamed right in her face.

She deactivated her quirk and her hair fell back down.

Fear spiked her chest… would she be kicked out before even getting to sit the crazy biased robots test?! Fuck, she was an idiot, she just used her quirk on a Pro Hero.

Miami cleared her throat, “I apologise for using my quirk on you, sir. You were hurting my ears”

He still didn’t speak.

Miami shuffled awkwardly, “Um, could you please read the letter on my paper and let me know which battle centre I’m in? I’m blind” She deadpanned a little dryly, holding out the small sheet.

The mans heart was still racing.

She cleared her throat again pointedly.

“OHH” He gasped and stumbled forward a bit, “Of-of course little listener-sure thing! Be-be happy to help” His voice warbled a little awkwardly as he took the piece of paper from her hand.

“BATTLE CENTER C” He shouted to her; quirk not activated but still incredibly loud.

She raised an eyebrow and could feel her face settle into something unamused and impatient.

Loudmouth gasped something scandalised, and his heart picked up again.

“Thank you, sir, please excuse me” Miami remembered her manners and bowed politely before slipping her glasses back on and running away to quickly catch the bus.

What a weird man.
