Work Text:
“welcome to detention. since the school policies have changed, you're now being tasked to clean the classrooms along this corridor. i hope you don’t end up here again, y/n, and gojo? just try and stay out of trouble for once.”
stiffly, your homeroom teacher thrusts a mop at the two of you and you do your best to glare at the tall figure beside you, who's gotten you into this situation in the first place. either he doesn't see you behind his ridiculous black sunglasses (are they even allowed in the school uniform policy?) or he chooses to ignore you and the outstretched broom in front of him. after an awkward few seconds of your teacher waiting for someone to take the old cleaning tools off of her, and gojo doing absolutely nothing but rock on his heels and stare uninterestedly out of the window, you bow in apology and take the broom off of her and recoil with it like it's a bad omen. she retracts her hand like she's scalded it and promptly turns on her heel, sparing neither of you a second glance as she disappears down the corridor.
one may think that gojo satoru is just your average reckless, nonchalant, tactless, gloating womaniser but in reality he is so much more than that. with hair purer than the first snow and an icy attitude to match, gojo seemed to get one with everyone and no one; of course, many girls and guys fawn over his looks and there's never a day where new gossip about gojo satoru is flitting between classrooms. rumour has it that he wears his sunglasses (again, uniform policy?) whenever he's seeing a girl and you don't think you can ever recall a moment where they don't shade his electric blue eyes from view.
despite all this, you're sure you can count the number of actual friends gojo satoru has on one hand; not that you were keeping tabs on hi or his relationships, but you've only ever seen him with a tall guy who's inky hair is tied back in a bun save for a single bang on the side of his face and ieiri, a girl from your biology class who has a neat brown bob and an attitude just as careless as satoru's.
perhaps it's his reputation as a member of the gojo clan that precedes him, and you wonder if people are actually afraid of him. those who have seen his cursed technique have called it 'insane' and almost divine, and he also wields the power of the 'six eyes', which you have no idea what it truly is but the name alone sounds terrifying. with any great power comes an even greater hubris as gojo always slacked off in the classes you have together, much preferring to mess with perfect little you instead.
this was going to be a tough 2 hours.
gojo had been relentlessly teasing you more than usual this week, showing no mercy, before you’d finally had enough and slapped him with murderous intent round the back of his head as you were handing out the worksheets to the class. unfortunately, you hadn't yet mastered the refined stealth of committing such an offence, not like satoru who had it down to a T, and your teacher caught you red-handed, expelling you from the classroom and landing you in your very first detention. all of your friends had thought you were brilliant - your teacher didn’t have the same sense of humour.
you don’t know why you were so shocked to see him already sat at a desk, carving a message into the wooden side of it with a pen he probably stole off some poor classmate. you’d heard from one of your friends that he's received three weeks worth of detentions for beating up some first year but you didn't believe her, musing that it'd just been an elaborate plot to boost his already-soaring reputation. apparently not.
ten minutes prior to your teacher leaving you for the afternoon he'd watched you enter, confused and timid because it was your first time in detention, from over the tops of his lenses. smirking a little, he'd continued scratching the word ‘FUCK’ into the desk in block capitals, noting how you muttered with the teacher before grumbling as she'd told you to take a seat. naturally, you sat as far away from satoru as possible, under the impression that you’d be at peace until you were allowed to leave, until the two of you were called to the front.
presently, gojo was rolling his eyes and snatched the mop out of your hands. he sauntered cooly out of the room with it resting atop his shoulders leaving you no other option but to stumble after him, wondering how the universe could be so cruel.
-
“how’s detention?” not even 10 minutes had passed.
“shut the hell up.”
“jeez, was just asking.”
he sounded genuinely hurt and your heart drops a little at your coldness but you ignore it and tell yourself he deserves it for being so rude to you all the time and for putting you in this position in the first place. with new vigour you continue mopping, eager to go home and enjoy your weekend. when he doesn't say anything more to you, the tension in your shoulders dissipates a little. the two of you clean in silence for a little longer, finally finishing the first classroom to an acceptable standard.
“one down, five more to go,” you mumble to yourself, marching into the next room and leaving gojo behind.
“so cute,” he smiles to himself, picking up the bucket of water and dragging it after you.
“you look cute when you’re determined,” he says aloud once he locates which classroom you'd chosen to subject to your wrath of soapy water and disinfectant, causing you to freeze up. an unfamiliar feeling bloomed in your chest and you weren't sure if you liked it or not. satoru doesn’t seem to realise he’s said his thoughts out loud as he wipes down the dust gathering on the windows, humming an upbeat tune.
“er..thanks?” you say. it comes out as more of a question and your detention buddy looks confused before it dawns on him. his face drops and a hand goes to cover his mouth. for the first time since you've known him, he looks genuinely caught off-guard.
“did i just say that out loud?”
“yeah?”
“shit.”
-
you hadn’t noticed the time fly by, or how the temperature of the school had gradually dropped as the pair of your worked in a comfortable silence after gojo had unexpectedly called you cute. both you and him were exhausted, four of the six classrooms sparklingly clean; you're absorbed with wiping away the chalk dust from the blackboard when you felt gojo nudge your shoulder. you weren't sure whether it was because of how hard you'd worked or whether you'd actually grown to tolerate his presence but being around satoru was sort of...comforting: you had to admire his ability to stay cheerful in the worst situations, making you forget that you were actually being punished, and you couldn't push the image of him with bona fide shock all over his face out of your mind. in fact, it even made you giggle sometimes and you had to quickly hover to the opposite side of the classroom so he wouldn't accuse you of laughing at him.
no matter how many times you did this though, satoru would always end up right next to you after a minute or two.
“what’s up?”
“no one’s here.”
“what?” you ask, throwing the rag into the bucket of dirty water. “fuck this then, i’m going home.”
without another second wasted, you fly out of the classroom and into your homeroom to retrieve your school bag, realising the absence of all the teachers that gojo had noticed ages ago but hadn't brought up because he was sure you would leave him as soon as the moment arose.
he finds it hard to explain, but gojo doesn't really hate you. he just finds it amusing to mess you with you every now and then, to push your buttons in hopes that you would try and push his in retaliation. sparring with people has been the only way of finding friends that satoru knows, so he felt ashamed when he took it too far and caused you to tarnish your perfect school record. he tried to take the blame for it too and get you off of the hook, but it was hard to pretend he'd smacked himself on the back of his head for fun.
by some incredible luck, a teacher had decided to patrol the training houses the day satoru and his friends decided to deal with the first year they'd been told had transferred to jujutsu tech to unleash a special grade curse and kill as many sorcerers as possible. they'd almost finished with him when the teacher stepped in, obviously unaware of the situation; arduous meeting after arduous meeting later, gojo had been let off with a slap on the wrist for trying to take matters into his own hands and not alerting members with authority to make an actual change. although he knew that that was absolute bullshit and that little to no retribution would've occurred without him, he was at least thankful you'd be there to keep him company.
gojo wordlessly does the same, except he doesn't have a bag and instead just follows you like a lost puppy, and walk with you to the entrance of the school building despite your light protests. casually, you pull the handle but it doesn’t budge. you try again, more frantically, and it’s stuck fast like concrete.
“no,” you whine childishly, sinking down onto the floor with your head in your hands.
“no way, they’ve locked us in,” satoru exclaims obviously and you don’t even have the strength to respond with a snarky comment.
“what should we do?” you ask. it comes out muffled because of your hands and you feel gojo sit beside you, offering no solution for now: you’re certain that he won’t respond but soon he’s grabbing your wrist and leading you into the cafeteria, which is thankfully still open. he pushes you into a booth, the cold leather making you hiss as you shove your hands under your thighs to keep them warm. satoru slides in opposite you, the bright light of his phone screen illuminating the dark room. there’s another moment of silence before he suddenly curses out loud and you're plunged into darkness, taking you by surprise.
“my phone’s dead,” he informs you and your heart drops again, before you remember something.
“wait, i’ve got my charger with me. hold on, let me find it.”
you throw your backpack onto the table between the two of you and root around for your charger. your hands close around it and you yank it out triumphantly, passing it to your detention buddy who takes it gratefully; it’s almost as if you’ve forgotten that you’re supposed to be sworn enemies.
and you take in his bare face and bright blue eyes in all their glory: he's not wearing his glasses anymore.
“it’s a bit cold in here isn’t it?” you mumble, shivering: the thin cotton of your school shirt is doing absolutely nothing to shield you from the biting chill of the october weather. gojo sees you shaking and instantly feels guilty so he sheds his uniform jacket from you, ignoring your quiet complaints that are undermined by the constant chatter of your teeth. soundlessly, you put it on and marvel at how oversized it is. you must look funny, swamped by all the blue fabric and surrounded by the scent of gojo satoru mingling with the light notes of the cleaning supplies from earlier.
“thanks,” you reply.
“no problem.”
as the time passes by, the temperature drops further and now gojo has started to shiver across from you. his phone is taking a painfully long time to charge and you sigh, wondering how long this is going to take. you’re starting to feel hungry and you crave a nice hot meal and a movie. gojo shuffles about on his side of the booth, trying to preserve some warmth by folding his arms across his chest.
your limbs act on their own accord as you stand up and move to slide beside him, leaning against his shoulder. he’s on the verge of hypothermia as he thankfully wraps his arms around you, his shivering ceasing eventually.
regular-you would absolutely hate seeing you snuggled up to your arch nemesis gojo satoru, but right now you're focusing on the warmth enveloping your bodies and the quickened pace of his heart. yours probably isn't much slower and your cheeks feel very hot out of the blue. the silence seems to stretch time and your thoughts wonder to the worst. will you ever escape from here and see your cosy, heated dorm ever again? will gojo start talking to you besides calling you names? speaking of gojo, why has his heartbeat sped up so quickly and why can't he keep his arm from curling around your shoulders?
“i like you, you know."
oh, that's why. you tense beside him and he fears he may have scared you off forever.
“weird flex, but ok.”
“i’m serious, y/n.”
“date me then.” you have no idea why you were feeling so confident all of a sudden. maybe you secretly enjoyed messing with gojo, and liked that he never took anything too seriously. not to mention anyone would be a fool to deny that he is good-looking...
“i’m trying to ask you but you keep being stubborn.” he chuckles and you feel the vibrations from his chest. his chin rests lightly on the top of your head.
“sorry, continue romeo.”
“shut up. wanna go on a date with me?”
“of course, you idiot. but how about we get rescued first?” there’s a hum of agreement and you feel your eyes begin to droop contentedly as gojo’s phone lights up and has been successfully revived from death.
“i can’t wait to spend the rest of our lives together.” he whispers, reaching for his phone and selecting getou's contact.
“huh?” you say, half-asleep.
“nothing, just can’t wait to get out of here. i’ll wake you up when someone comes to get us. getou should be on his way over soon.”
“oh, okay,” you reply, already drifting off to sleep.
