Mum

Summary:

Eiji didn’t mention much about his past, and Ash didn’t really ask. Eiji, after all, seemed like your everyday normal guy, with a normal story and a normal family. So why would Ash be bothered by the vague information that Eiji gave alluding to his life?

Ash regrets not asking.

Because now it was coming at him full force, and yeah, he was 100% not prepared for it at all.

Turns out, Eiji just might beat him out when it comes to secrets from the past. Who knew that someone had a more complicated life than him?

But sometimes you just have to go with the flow. Even if the flow contains more twists and turns than a freaking soap opera.

Chapter 1: I'm so heavy

Notes:

Title and Chapter Titles from "Mum" by Luke Hemmings. Song has some significance to the story.

BEFORE YOU READ: For the purpose of the story, Dino and Arthur did not come to observe Banana Fish being injected into Shorter. I need them to be elsewhere lol. Not only that, but Ash and the gang are already in Dino’s custody (so this is post-dinner, but Arthur and Dino are elsewhere). I originally wanted it to be as canon as possible before it went canon divergent, but I was dumb and created the idea before I re-watched the episode (I haven’t seen the show since last year, and I only briefly looked at the summary). So uh, hopefully, no one is too mad with me lol. Since this is post-dinner, this still takes place at night. This also has no set timeline because I can’t be bothered. Imagine whatever year you want lol.

Note: At one point, I'll make another story and just throw any important information in there. If you have any questions or are confused about anything, let me know because I'm not sure when I'll be getting to that. It'll just include things like their ages (as in the BNHA characters), and maybe later I'll add chapters explaining some backstories/connections to other characters. We shall see!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

“Try telling that to Ash, the little bro of Griffin, the guy you killed,” Shorter said to Abraham. He let out a smirk, “He’ll destroy you, for sure.”

Abraham panicked, backing away slightly, “Shut up! He’s powerless!” Abraham cried out, anger and panic clear in his voice.

A man’s voice spoke over Abraham’s, “Be quiet. Is everything ready? The boss isn’t a patient man you know.”

Shorter had no idea who the man was that walked in, but he could only assume that he had been sent by Dino to make sure his ‘project’ went smoothly. He was shocked Dino didn’t show up himself.

Abraham let out a smirk, walking away to his desk, “Yeah. It’s going to go perfectly this time.”

“Is he talking about Banana Fish?” Shorter mumbled to himself, he let out a smirk, looking around, “You got all this equipment and can only make dud drugs, huh?”

Abraham started filling up a needle, “You tell us, if it’s a dud or not,” he said, turning around and facing Shorter.

Shorter’s expression turned to fear, “You’re using me as a lab rat?” he yelled out, as the other doctors surrounded him to make sure he stayed as still as possible.

“Shorter!” a voice cried out.

“Eiji,” Shorter bellowed back, as he saw his friend with his hands cuffed behind his back, being dragged into the room by two men.

“Begin,” the unknown man spoke.

“Damn it!” Shorter cried out, as the needle began to press into his skin.

Suddenly, a gunshot went off. The bullet zoomed past Abraham, almost hitting him in the arm. Abraham cried out in shock, dropping the needle, and causing it to shatter to the ground. Everyone looked around in confusion.

My, my, you really got yourself into quite the mess, Eiji-kun” a boisterous voice spoke out into the room.

Everyone’s heads turned up, as they saw someone who appeared to be sitting on a floating cloud, waving a gun around. He was a male, in his early thirties at least, and had blue wispy hair that seemed to defy the laws of gravity, as well as tan skin and blue eyes. He had goggles on his head and was wearing a plain dark blue bodysuit as well as black fingerless gloves. It was covered by a brown jacket.

Everyone looked at him in confusion, since he wasn’t speaking English. Eiji on the other hand knew exactly what he said.

Oboro-san, what are you doing here? ” he asked, breathless, his words echoing throughout the room. Bewilderment was clear in his tone.

The man tilted his head, a small smile appeared on his face, “Why Eiji-kun, this is a rescue mission of course!” he bellowed out, as the cloud he was sitting on lowered to the ground.

Everyone stared, wondering if this was real or truly a dream. Because people didn’t just… float on clouds. What the hell was going on?

The man jumped off of the cloud as it disappeared, and he stood up to his full height. He was easily one of the tallest in the room, at about 6’4. Add onto the fact that he was quite buff, and everyone was clearly uneasy.

“How the hell did you get in here?” Abraham cried out, panic more clear than ever at the sight of the intruder.

The man looked at Abraham in confusion, most likely not understanding a word he was saying as well.

Um,” he started to say, “fuck me?” he said slowly. He let out a scoff, “That better have been right, Hizashi,” he mumbled to himself, before quickly aiming his gun at one of the doctors, and shooting them in the head.

It all went into chaos from there.

The man was clearly good with a gun, as he quickly took out everyone before they could even blink. Abraham was the hardest though, determined not to go down. As the men who were originally holding Eiji were shot down, Abraham took his opportunity and grabbed Eiji, holding him in front of him.

The blue-haired man let out a small curse, before taking down everyone else.

Once mostly everyone in the room had been clearly shot dead, the blue-haired man turned his attention to the three people who were still alive; Eiji, Shorter and Abraham.

The man pointed his gun at Abraham, “Back away from him,” he said, and even if Abraham couldn’t understand him, his angry quiet tone gave away his threatening intentions. He took one step forward.

Abraham was either dumb or desperate because he pulled out a pocket knife and held it to Eiji’s neck instead.

“Don’t come any closer!” he cried out, the knife pressing down, almost drawing blood.

“Eiji!” Shorter cried out. He was still restrained to the chair, but he attempted to break free. His movements became desperate as Abraham pressed the knife deeper into Eiji’s neck, this time drawing blood.

The blue-haired man didn’t look too panicked. If anything, he had a blank look on his face. He put the gun away.

Abraham let out a small breath of relief, but it was short-lived.

You know what to do,” the blue-haired man spoke loudly.

Of course, Oboro-san,” a voice replied. More specifically, a voice that wasn’t originally in the room before.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, something whipped past the man and grabbed onto the knife that was in Abraham’s hands, pulling it away from him without injuring Eiji.

Everyone looked up and spotted a man in his early twenties who was squatting on the bar of the balcony. He was in a similar get-up to the other man, but instead, his jumpsuit was dark green and went all the way up to his neck. He had white long gloves, bright red shoes, and no jacket.

He had dark green curly hair, with green eyes and freckles scattered across his face. The crazy thing? There appeared to be a black whip attached to his right arm. The whip disappeared into his arm as he pulled the knife towards him. He inspected it for a second, before tossing it behind him.

The man then stood up, still balancing on the balcony, before the weird black whip stuff came out of both of his arms this time, and it immediately attached itself to Abraham.

At this point, Eiji was given the chance to escape as Abraham’s body had frozen up in fear, and it left Eiji a quick moment to pull out of his arms and fall to the ground.

Abraham cried out in shock as he was wrapped up in the black whip.

The green-haired man had then proceeded to bring Abraham up, throwing his back against the ceiling as he himself jumped to the floor, landing right as Abraham made an impact. He then threw Abraham across the room, and Abraham was temporarily knocked out as he lay amongst the crashed equipment.

The black whip stuff returned to its owner, as he looked over to the blue-haired man, who was helping Eiji up.

Are you okay? ” the blue-haired man asked in a panicked tone.

Eiji nodded his head, “I’m fine, I’m fine. How did you even find me? ” he asked, shaken up, but curious.

The green-haired man seemed to speak into an earpiece attached to his ear, before walking over to Eiji.

He went behind Eiji and inspected the cuffs for a second. His arms then lit up with green lightning before he pulled at them. They snapped like they were cheap metal, broken in seconds.

Another man walked into the room, jumping from the balcony. Unlike the others, he was shirtless, but still had the same bottom half that the others were wearing. His outfit was dark red, and he had a black backpack on his back.

He had spikey red hair, as well as red eyes, and had a concerned look on his face as he observed the blue-haired man fussing over Eiji.

His eyes then turned his attention towards Shorter, who was looking at the scene in shock.

Hey guys, what do you want me to do with him? ” the red-haired man called out, pointing at Shorter whilst looking at the others.

Eiji was the one who spoke up, “Ah, he’s a very good friend of mine. If you could release him, that would be great.” He would have done it himself, but Oboro was clearly not going to let him walk away from him any time soon.

The red-haired man shrugged, before walking over to Shorter. Shorter just stared at him in confusion, as the man’s arms quickly turned… hard. Almost like a rock.

The man then proceeded to grab and pull the straps off of him. He did it so quickly that it was almost like ripping off a band-aid.

In seconds, Shorter was free.

“What the hell is going on,” he whispered to himself. He remained frozen in his seat.

The red-haired man then turned away from Shorter, and directed his attention to the green-haired man, “Ah, the coast was clear, just for you to know. No one heard the gunshots, so I think we should be okay for a bit. I have no doubt the others will set off an alarm at some point though,” he said, one arm balancing on his hip.

The others? ” Eiji cut in.

The blue-haired man looked slightly sheepish before he quickly explained something to Eiji.

Shorter watched as Eiji proceeded to get angrier and angrier at every word the man spoke.

They started arguing.

Both Shorter and the red-haired man’s attention was drawn away from the fight, as the green-haired man turned away and slowly began to walk towards the unconscious figure of Abraham.

He inspected Abraham for a second before crouching over top of his body. Moments later, Abraham began to stir.

Abraham slowly woke up, only to find himself staring into the green eyes of the person who had landed him there in the first place.

He tried to escape but noticed that his back was right against the wall, and the green-haired man was blocking his exit.

Eiji had suddenly gone quiet, turning away from the panicked blue-haired man. He presumably attempted to end their argument by cutting it off. He then noticed what the green-haired man was doing. So did the blue-haired man. Everyone was silent.

The green-haired man tilted his head in curiosity, “Abraham Dawson. You and your brother created the drug known as Banana Fish,” he said calmly to the man.

Shorter looked at the green-haired man in shock. He could speak fluent English?

“What-what do you want from me?” Abraham shakily asked, body trembling in fear.

No one saw, but the green-haired man let out a small smile at the man’s fear.

He sat down, and slowly crawled up Abraham’s body, almost in a seductive way. But this wasn’t sexual by any means, this was a show of power. Everyone knew who was in charge at this moment.

His face went close to Abraham’s ear, as he licked the shell of it, causing Abraham to let out a small eep. The green-haired man giggled in response.

He put his mouth right to his ear, “You tried to hurt my friend, and I can’t just allow that to happen. Although, I can only imagine what your boss would think of your little failure. You should be grateful for what I’m about to do,” he whispered into his ear.

Abraham continued to remain frozen in terror as the green-haired man bent down, pressing a soft kiss to his neck before pulling up. He was practically sitting in his lap at this point.

Out of nowhere, the green-haired man pulled out a knife and quickly slit Abraham’s throat.

Abraham’s hand flew to his neck, as blood rapidly flowed out. He struggled to breathe.

The blue-haired man sighed, “Midoriya-kun, stop playing with your food. Just end his miserable existence already, we don’t have all the time in the world,” he complained.

The green-haired man let out a little pout, before sighing and turning back to the dying man.

“Sorry, darling. Looks like we can’t play today,” he purred, and with that, the green-haired man took his knife and struck right into Abraham’s heart.

Abraham quickly took his last breath.

Shorter was not new to death by any means but somehow seeing these strangers come out and take everyone down, struck a fear in him that he didn’t even know he could have. Who the hell were these people? And how did they know Eiji?

The green-haired man pulled out his knife from the dead body, licking the blood off of it with a manic smile.

My god Midoriya, you’re starting to turn into Toga-chan,” the red-haired man said, disgust on his face at what he was witnessing.

The green-haired man rolled his eyes, before getting off of Abraham’s dead body and wiping the rest of the blood on his clothes as he walked over to the rest of the group.

The blue-haired man raised an eyebrow at the red-haired man, “Only starting? ” he said, sarcasm clear in his voice.

You didn’t have to do that,” Eiji sighed with an annoyed tone.

The green-haired man let out a smirk, “But it’s just oh so fun,” he replied.

“Who the hell are you people?” everyone turned towards Shorter, who by now was standing.

The blue-haired man and the red-haired man looked at him confused. I guess only two of the people in this room spoke English, Shorter thought.

Eiji looked slightly uncomfortable by the question.

“Don’t worry, we’re allies,” the green-haired man spoke up. The crazed look he had on before had all but disappeared. He seemed to be… almost normal now.

Shorter let out a scoff, “And how can I even trust your word? You just killed practically everyone in this room!”

The green-haired man raised an eyebrow, “You mean all the people who were your enemies?” he countered.

“Shorter, it’s okay. I know these people,” Eiji cut in, “They, um, they’re my friends. From Japan,” he said lightly.

The green-haired man snorted, “Could you be even less vague, Eiji-kun? Technically, we work for his father. But we practically consider each other family.”

Shorter raised an eyebrow, not quite sure what to make of the situation. It looks like Ash wasn’t the only one with secrets. He wondered what kind of past Eiji was hiding.

Shorter sighed and walked over to Eiji. Once he reached him, he quickly did a once-over of him, “Are you alright?” he murmured to Eiji.

Eiji let out a small smile, before nodding, “Yes, I’m fine. How about you?” he asked.

Shorter nodded his head, returning his smile. He pulled Eiji into a light hug, feeling a moment of relief for his safety. Eiji returned it, “I’m sorry,” Shorter whispered into his hair, squeezing him tighter. “It’s okay, I forgive you” Eiji replied quietly, before pulling away.

Shorter then turned around and stared at the three gentlemen. He turned back towards Eiji, “So, uh, you gonna introduce me?” he asked, awkwardly.

Eiji let out a light laugh, “Ah, yes. Um, this right here is Oboro,” he said, pointing towards the man who first appeared. Oboro, hearing his name, waved at Shorter.

“Hello,” he said in English, a strong accent coming through.

Eiji then pointed towards the red-haired man, “This is Kirishima,” he said, as the red-haired man walked over, and put his hand out for Shorter to shake. Shorter returned it.

“Nice to meet you,” Kirishima said in rough English.

Eiji tried to continue to speak but was cut off.

“And I’m Midoriya,” the green-haired man called out before Eiji could introduce him, “There’s not many of us who speak semi-fluent to fluent English in our group. So for now you’re just stuck talking to Eiji and me.”

Shorter nodded his head. A look passed over his face, “Uh, so is anyone going to explain what just happened? And why the fuck do superpowers seem to be a thing?” It had finally kicked in, what the fuck was the crazy shit he just witnessed

Midoriya had a hesitant look, before looking over at Oboro and having a brief conversation. He turned back towards Shorter, “Look, it’s a long and complicated conversation. And we think it’s best that we gather up everyone and take you back to our base and then we’ll give you an explanation.”

Shorter sighed, he should have expected that answer. What the hell did he get dragged into?

Midoriya continued, “This is what we can tell you though,” Shorter perked up, “We were sent by our boss to do three things,” Midoriya held up his hand, one finger going up at a time, “One, to rescue Eiji alive by any means necessary. Two, to retrieve anyone of importance towards the case and to Eiji. And three, to take this place down and leave no evidence behind,” Midoirya put his hand down, “We heard briefly about the existence of Banana Fish by Eiji, and after we did some investigation of our own, we uncovered a lot. A majority of our group came here from Japan to America in order to help get Eiji out of the shit he got dragged into. I know this is a lot to process, but I promise you we’re on your side. Now, is there anyone of importance we should be on the lookout for? We have three other teams dispatched across the building. They’re on their own missions, but if there’s anyone they need to be on the lookout for, now’s the time to mention it.”

Eiji and Shorter looked at each other, a pained look crossing their faces, “Well, we’re not exactly su–” Shorter was cut off by Oboro talking.

This is Alpha Team to Omega Team, copy. What’s the situation? ” he said into an earpiece. It looks like a team had contacted him.

Oboro turned towards Shorter and Eiji, “Ah, there are four men tied up in some kind of dungeon. Are they your friends? One has blond hair and green eyes– ”

Eiji’s eyes widened before he interrupted Oboro “Yes! ” he cried out, “Those are friends, please make sure to get them out safely. And let them know that Shorter and I are fine as well.”

Oboro nodded his head, before communicating with the other team.

Shorter looked at Eiji in confusion. Eiji looked at him with a smile, “It looks like they found Ash and the gang!” he said.

Shorter let out a relieved breath, “Phew, I’m glad to know where they are. I know Dino said he was gonna take them, but I was scared we would never find out where.”

While Oboro finished up talking, Midoriya looked at Kirishima, “Kirishima-kun, let’s gather all the evidence we can. Don’t forget to get a sample of Banana Fish.” Kirishima nodded, and the both of them navigated their ways through the dead bodies as they looked for anything of importance, occasionally grabbing a thing or two. It was put into the bag that Kirishima had been carrying.

Shorter looked at Eiji confused, pointing to the two men, “What are they doing?” he asked.

“Ah, they’re gathering as much evidence as they can about Banana Fish. Most likely my father’s orders,” Eiji replied.

“Midoriya mentioned earlier that they work for your father. Don’t tell me you’re a part of the yakuza or something,” he joked.

Eiji let out a laugh, “No, no, not at all. I guess you could say it’s kind of like a gang? Then again, it feels more like organized crime,” he mumbled out.

Shorter did a double-take, “Huh?” he asked, stunned.

Eiji patted his bare back lightly, “All will be explained soon, I promise. Just trust me.”

Shorter sighed, slightly annoyed, “I can’t wait until all of this is explained. I’m so confused!” he cried out in frustration.

Eiji gave him a sympathetic smile.

“Okay, we got what we needed. So we’re going to head out now. I have no doubt that an alarm is going to be triggered soon, knowing our troupes,” Midoriya said as he and Kirishima finished putting everything into the bag they brought. Apparently, he had already communicated with Kirishima and Oboro beforehand, because they started walking towards the exit.

First Oboro left, quietly making sure no one was around. Next was Kirishima, who signalled for Eiji and Shorter to follow him. Midoriya ended up at the end, and before he left the room, he quickly radioed in someone.

Deku to Shoto, do you copy? ” he murmured.

The response was quick, “Shoto to Deku, copy. What do you need?

Midoriya looked around at the dead bodies, letting out a small smile. It was quickly wiped from his face. Even he still sometimes unsettled himself.

We’ve secured Naosu. He was being held in a lab, I’m going to send you the coordinates. Make sure not leave any evidence, it was the place where all the info for Banana Fish was held,” he said cooly, as he typed coordinates on his phone.

A ping was heard on the other side of the receiver, “Received. I’ll head there as soon as I can. We’re currently dealing with… a situation.”

Midoriya perked up, “Is everything okay? ” he asked, concern in his tone.

There was hesitance on the other line. He sighed, before murmuring into the earpiece, “We’ve required another target. It’s proving more… difficult than we thought it would.”

Midoriya bit his lip, “Who is it? ” he asked, slightly nervous about what the response would be.

And then the person whispered a name that Midoirya hadn’t heard in a long time; a name that was completely unexpected.

We think we found Fujio.”

If Midoriya was holding a phone to his ear, he would have dropped it by now.

Shit.”

Midoriya quickly caught up to the rest of the group. It looked like no one had noticed how long he had been gone.

Who was that? ” Eiji asked quietly as they walked through the empty halls.

Midoirya waved his hand, “Ah, that was just Todoroki-kun. Just making sure he knew to specifically burn the lab down,” he replied, giving Eiji a tight smile.

Eiji noticed the expression on Midoriya’s face but chose to ignore it. He nodded slowly, before turning back towards Shorter, and having a quiet conversation with him.

The situation just got a whole lot more complicated.

Reminder

English: “Hello”

Japanese: “Hello

Notes:

Note: Hello everyone! I’ve been wanting to do a Banana Fish and My Hero Academia crossover ever since I watched Banana Fish back in like August last year…? Actually, I have no idea when I watched it, but I know it was during the summer. It was after the first time I had watched My Hero Academia as well lol, and I watched that in like July last year. So to start, this isn’t supposed to be like my story “Runaway” or anything (as in this big multi-chaptered story). I only plan to make this a short story, with maybe 5-6 chapters, or 8 if I really can’t wrap it up then. This is obviously canon divergent, but I’m not fixing the entire series, just Shorter’s death and by default Ash’s death and Arthur’s death. So basically, I’m ending on an open ending or whatever you call it. I just wanted to get the concrete stuff down, you know? A lot of you guys most likely have questions about what kind of universe this is if the MHA characters have their quirks still. That will all be revealed in due time, but considering Shorter was shocked, I think that already gives you a clue. Things are gonna get real complicated guys, and not just with Eiji’s backstory. I got a big plot twist that none of y’all are gonna see coming. Actually… I don’t think anyone’s really going to expect what I plan to do with this story. My mind is a weird unique place that no one will ever understand. Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. I won’t answer them if they’re spoilers to future plot points though lol. Looking forward to your feedback!

Note 2: So, uh, I think this is the longest chapter I have ever written for a multi-chaptered story, like 3,600 words dude what– I’m not even kidding you when I tell you I never expected something like this out of me, especially in one night. Just a year ago, I would be lucky to get 1,000 words before getting a headache and stopping. And I did this in like a couple of hours throughout the night? I thought it was a fluke with my other story Panic Attack when I wrote 3,000 words for the last chapter (that took a few nights though), but I guess not haha. Maybe my writing is improving. Now isn’t that a thought? Fun fact btw, in the first few days that I created this, I went through a lot of ideas. It’s kind of different what I wrote compared to my notes. My most recent notes are the closest to what this ended up being, and my old ones are VERY different.

Note 3: Just a fair warning, I’m not re-watching Banana Fish for this or anything. I was barely able to watch this episode to confirm what happened so I could write accordingly (that obviously failed…). But yeah, I ain’t putting myself through that tragic shit all over again for a freaking fanfic. My heart can only take so much, guys. So that being said, this might feel very off from what actually happened in the anime. And I apologize for that. Involving Sing and Shorter's gang, I haven't figured out what to do with Sing, but we won't see the gang, so just pretend that they were planning to break in the next night or something (you can tell I literally can’t remember what happened).

Note 4: One last fun fact before I wrap this up, back when I was into BF and MHA, I did create another fanfic with a similar premise, but it wasn’t to save Shorter’s death (or at least to prevent it, I had ideas to bring him back), it was for… reasons I can’t explain yet. I didn’t fully know where to take it though, so it kind of ended being a mess in my head. This idea though, I’m more sure of what I want, and I have a better goal which is nice. Don’t think that idea will ever get posted because I took a lot of elements from it and put it into this. This is kind of like a revamped version of that idea haha.
