Summary:

Guardian fic for Valentine's Day :)

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

Yunlan has never believed that he is a good cook. He knows that his skills are limited to instant noodles and he’s never tried to overstep those boundaries. And ever since he’s started living with Shen Wei, he hasn’t had the need to cook anything.

But it’s Valentine’s Day and Yunlan is currently vigorously fanning the air in the kitchen with all the windows open to get rid of the burnt smell. He’s not sure what went wrong.

After discussing it with Zhu Hong, they found a chocolate recipe that seemed simple enough. But looks can be deceiving and just to be sure, they tested it out at her house the week before. Everything had gone smoothly, and the chocolates were beautiful and delicious.

But now that Yunlan’s alone, the chocolate is burnt, and the microwave looks like something died in it.

It’s terribly disappointing and Yunlan’s worried that Shen Wei will be home soon and Yunlan will have nothing to show but a messy kitchen and a burnt lump of toxic…matter. It’s just as he thinks this that the door of the apartment opens, and Shen Wei appears in the doorway.

It takes a few moments, but Shen Wei notices the burnt smell immediately and rushes into the kitchen, grabbing Yunlan’s cutting board and halting his fanning.

“Yunlan, what happened?” Shen Wei asks, and the concern in his voice is as heart-warming as it is disheartening.

“I was…I wanted to make some chocolate for you,” Yunlan says as he gestures towards the very tragically formed lump of charcoal that he made. He laughs weakly, “It didn’t go too well….”

Shen Wei frowns slightly, but it’s one of bemusement and curiosity.

“Yunlan, you don’t need to make me chocolate,” Shen Wei smiles at him reassuringly and it only makes Yunlan feel worse because Shen Wei told him that he didn’t like sweet things when they first met, how could he have forgotten?

“Nothing will ever be sweeter than you,” Shen Wei says, and it’s ridiculously sappy and Yunlan’s blushing, how can he say that? It’s so embarrassing.

But with Shen Wei’s help, he manages to make a new batch of chocolates and they take turns decorating the tiny squares of sweetly flavored happiness.
