Work Text:

Sunlight poured through the open shutters, laying a sheet of gold upon Mika’s face. Hesitantly, he opened his eyes, only to close them again. His eyelids were so, so heavy, and the warmth enveloping him was a warmth he thought he could never feel again, not in the magnitude it was at currently.

In all honesty, it felt like he was floating on clouds.

He was fairly aware of a familiar arm draped awkwardly across his face on his mouth though.

Yuu.

Really, it wasn’t that uncomfortable, and he didn’t really want to move in the case that Yuu woke up, but he’d rather that than one of his fangs accidentally scratching Yuu’s arm. So gently, Mika wriggled his arm out of Yuu’s strange somewhat tight koala-bear hold and pushed his arm away from his face.

“Mika?”

Ah.

“Sorry Yuu, didn’t mean to wake you,” he croaked, wincing at how scratchy his voice sounded. Nope. Too early for this.

Grumbling, Yuu rolled over and released Mika from his grasp before sprawling across the other half of the bed. Honestly. Mika was the one who was adjusting to a diurnal schedule, why was Yuu so tired during the daytime when he slept like a bear in the winter at night?

It had always been like this, he reminisced, allowing a smirk to grace his face as memories of the orphanage trickled into the bleary morning fog of his head.

White sheets were draped over the two bodies, thick blankets to ensure the upcoming fall wouldn’t freeze Yuu to death in his sleep (as if that would stop the idiot from anything).

Again warmth pooled in his chest, and he closed his eyes before carefully kissing the nape of Yuu’s neck.

And then he woke up to darkness.

Each and every time Mikaela takes a short rest after several nights of keeping watch for the others, he has these dreams - dreams of running away, living in the countryside, living with Yuu in a small cottage far away from the mess that they were in now. Sometimes the dreams would take place outdoors in the woods, other times within the tiny cabin his head had managed to imagine - all of them, however, were embarrassingly domestic.

He wiped the sleep from his eyes, feeling dreary waking from such a nice dream. It’d be bad to sleep more than he needed though, especially considering he was the only one in the squad who didn’t require sleep.

Mika had to stay up as long as he could.

It didn’t hurt to dream, though, of what could be. Yuu, out of danger, kept satisfied with a healthy amount of adventure in the woods surrounding the tiny cottage they’d be living in, and away from the filthy humans that wished to use him.

Yuu called these people his family - that wasn't something he could deny or take lightly. But these were also the people reeling him into this mess. Mika had gotten used to them, even dared to take a liking to them, but he knew better than to believe their friendship with Yuu would bring much good to him in regards to keeping him from rushing straight into the cold unforgiving arms of Death.

The darkness was suffocating, but not so much as it would have been had his eyes not been made for it. He was quickly made aware of Yuu’s uniform jacket draped across his chest (stupid Yuu - the cold wasn’t that much of an issue anymore. Mika ignored the smile tugging at his lips), and sat up in the dark on the concrete he’d been lying down on. The squad had stopped at a warehouse to rest, and there wasn’t much bedding to work with.

Slowly and quietly, as if there was anyone to even disturb, he pulled his knees to his chest with Yuu’s jacket still on them, and laid his head on it face-down. The feeling and smell of home gently enveloped him.

Maybe he and Yuu wouldn’t be finding their way to the countryside anytime soon. Maybe he’s rushing to his death despite all of the signs that he’s being used. But at the very least, Mika would go down first.
