Summary
When their journey to July is disrupted by a violent sandstorm, Vash and Wolfwood are forced to take shelter in an abandoned home. As the night draws on, Wolfwood struggles to reconcile the looming guilt of his inevitable betrayal with his desire for Vash and for a future he is certain neither of them will ever get to see. Perhaps the duty forced upon him by The Eye is not as black and white as he once thought, and perhaps belief can be about more than just service. Would it be a sin to ask Vash to have faith in him, one last time?

Vash had always loved the scent of smoke that drifted around Wolfwood, whether it be incense or cigarettes, maybe it was just the smell of the priest that brought turmoil into his heart. Making sense of these feelings only got harder once Vash noticed the rosary tucked under his companions neckline.

“Can I ask what you pray for?” Vash asks, voice soft and even in the stillness of the church. The stained glass above the altar is broken in parts; Wolfwood can tell it was once beautiful. A symbol of hope and worship.
“Forgiveness. Absolution for sins.” Wolfwood pulls out a cigarette. “You know, the usual.”
“Can god provide that?” Vash asks.
Wolfwood knows it’s an actual question. Vash is curious, always inquisitive about what Wolfwood does at the altar, what he asks for from a god who may not care any longer about this planet’s inhabitants.
“I’m not sure, spikey. I don’t think he’s taking requests right now.” Wolfwood takes an inhale of the cigarette, blows the smoke out avoiding Vash.
“Will you take offense if I suggest praying to someone else?”
The air is still. The stained glass is covered by the cigarette smoke. Wolfwood considers his next words carefully.

Challia feels almost paralysed, that night with the wine. He's tired, the room is dark and warm, and there's only him and Char. People orbit the Captain, it's just the kind of natural magnetism he has, Challia supposes. The wine is good, but he already knew Char had good taste. It's when he sets the wineglass down, rises from the seat across from Challia, and steps into his space. He's fucked, he can feel it; Char is far too close for this to be anything other than a message. Char smiles, slowly, smugly, then steps past Challia to leave. It doesn't feel like a warning.
