Summary
When Katsuki comes home and is met only with silence even though the door was unlocked, he knows Hitoshi’s mission didn’t go over well.
“Fuck,” Katsuki mutters as he toes off his shoes and then takes the time to throw on a ratty shirt and soft sweatpants before he goes to find Hitoshi in the bathroom.
Just like Katsuki knew he would be, he’s curled up in the bath, pressed into the far end, his arms around his legs and his face buried in his knees. It’s still unbearably hot in the bathroom, so he can’t have been there for long yet, which means that Katsuki wasn’t that far behind him.

Hitoshi thinks it’s the happiest moment of his life when the cat bonks its entire head into his hand afterwards and the bliss lasts for a good five seconds before Yamada speaks.
“Ah, I see you’ve met Bumbles.”
It’s enough to make Hitoshi go ice-cold with terror and he scrambles away from the cat, trying to put as much space between him and the defenceless creature as he can.
“Please, it’s—it’s my fault, it didn’t mean to pay me any attention, I made it, I brainwashed it, please don’t hurt it,” he rushes out, stumbling over his words in his haste and he feels as if he’s choking on fear. “Please, the cat didn’t do anything wrong, it was me, all me, please, don’t!”
“Shinsou,” Yamada whispers out, and Hitoshi doesn’t dare to look up at him, doesn’t dare to do anything but to cower on the ground and hope they’ll go after him instead of the cat.

It starts slow.
Shinsou messages him when he can't make it to school or training, when the trains are delayed due to a villain attack. When Shouta drops that he adores cats almost more than he does his husband, Shinsou starts sending him pictures of stray cats he apparently feeds and it's something they talk about a lot.
Shouta makes sure to always answer the kid, even if it's just a simple 'Okay' but he never lets a message go unanswered, not if he can help it.
It takes even longer for Shinsou to trust that Shouta's offer for him to come by whenever was genuine.

Eventually, people learned about his reputation, heard of his winning streak, and discovered that if they fought him, they would lose.
Depending on the handler, losing meant something different for everyone. But no matter what, a loss meant punishment. Some got beaten, some were starved, some killed, some suffered worse.
All that’s to say, Katsuki became a light sleeper. Unfortunately for his competition, the league didn’t want to lose their “grand champion”, so after the third attack, he was moved.

Or Katsuki is never saved at Kamino and the league uses him in their human dog fighting ring.

Katsuki doesn't particularly like calling his mother—prefers to see her in the flesh, actually—but planning for her birthday requires it because if he cooks and brings a dish she already made at home—again—he's going to scream.
So coordinating on the phone is much easier and probably way healthier for him so he bites the bullet and suffers through a five minute phone call with her.
It's the usual hell, at least right until she asks "Will you bring your boyfriend?"
It almost feels as if Katsuki blue-screens and it takes him way too long to answer.
"Katsuki? Will he be there or not?" she impatiently demands to know and Katsuki's brain comes back online.
"My what now?"
