For all intents and purposes, this strange woman looks indistinguishable from a strange man. The disguise fooled Satomi, anyway. Or, partially fooled. Maybe this is why she, despite her terror, so willingly climbed into the passenger side of her car and allowed herself to be driven away. A deep, buried ruby that pulsed in recognition.

Crosby, lingering nearby, gave Zhenya a tentative smile. They were all smiling, everyone in the room, looking at Zhenya and Crosby and dreaming big dreams, the same dreams that had pried Zhenya out of Magnitogorsk and launched him halfway around the world. Zhenya knew what was expected of him, him and Crosby together, and why not? Why couldn’t they?

Summary
Together, they make easy work of any terrain, and by nightfall, they've already gone further than the initial journey to Ives' cave. They set up shelter on a snow-capped outcrop, heat some Slauson-filled stew over a fire and go to sleep without much affair. Boyd wakes before Ives. The murderer's hair is disheveled, and his eyelashes fan out against his cheek. It occurs to him that he could end it all here, kill Ives while he sleeps, vulnerable and unguarded. But–
He has accepted the life he is cursed to live. But he’s not so sure he can accept living it alone.
