Summary
“Oh, come on,” Will says, struggling to keep his voice neutral in a different way. His mouth is dry, and he hates Mike for it even more. “Is this what it’s going to be like this summer?”
Mike looks back at him, considering, lips pursed in an effort to shut down the smirk that Will knows is fighting to break free. Will doesn’t dare to let his gaze catch there, focusing instead on holding Mike’s stare, because this, too, is a game.
Five years into a rivalry with bittersweet origins, the only thing Mike and Will want is to beat each other at this summer’s camp counselor competition. But being back at camp is dredging up old memories, and as Mike and Will lose momentum and gain something else entirely, it becomes increasingly clear that one summer can change everything.

Summary
“Will,” Mike starts.
“No, seriously,” Will says. The hand that isn’t holding his beer raises between them, twitching downwards like he’s physically shoving any of Mike’s other questions back down where they came from. “It was a stupid thing to ask.”
Mike shakes his head, then scoots forward, inching closer to Will. “It’s not,” he insists. “If it’s you asking, it’s not stupid, Will.”
On New Year's Eve, 1996, Will asks Mike a question. He gets an answer and then some.

Summary
Will takes a moment, hands clenched into fists at his sides, to rest his head against the grain of the wood and close his eyes. Here, with the solid weight of the door to ground him, he evaluates the facts: the war is over, Vecna dead and gone for good this time. Max is awake, reunited with Lucas and El at last, who both rushed to return to their places at her bedside the moment they knew. The rest of his family is upstairs, the rest of his friends alongside them, alive and mostly well and rejoicing in the fact that a years-long nightmare has finally reached its conclusion. It’s a night for togetherness, for celebrating hard-earned victories, for finally looking ahead instead of back over their shoulders.
It’s also a night where Will almost killed Mike.
In the midst of their final stand against Vecna, a possessed Will nearly strangles Mike to death. In the basement bathroom of the Wheeler's house after their victory, Mike and Will confront the aftermath.

“Especially since you’re at camp this summer,” Dustin is saying, oblivious to Will and the way his stomach is churning in his gut, “and he’s about to– wait. Is he going to school here?”
Will flinches like Dustin hit him. “Uh, no,” he says quickly, setting his phone down and twisting his hands together. “South Carolina.”
Dustin flinches like Will hit him. “Ouch.”Exactly two weeks after his boyfriend left for his graduation trip and roughly six months after Will successfully got a guy to ask him out, a reunion date at camp is the only thing he's been looking forward to all day. The unresolved issue of long distance that's still hanging over his relationship and the fact that he still can't be in a room with Mike Wheeler without feeling awkward about it really puts a damper on things.

“Mike,” Will admonishes, flustered, but Mike only smiles against his skin.
“Missed you,” Mike answers. Will did not ask, and they’ve only been apart for less than a day, but it’s no less true. He feels whole again, the strain in his muscles and joints all but forgotten in favor of the reunion they fought for.
Will gets taken to a dragon's keep. Mike gets him back.

“Dude,” Dustin says, sounding kind of horrified but also kind of delirious with elation. “Oh my God, you like him. You like Will. Will. As in, our Will. Our best friend Will.”
“I do not–” Mike tries, even though he’d kind of just admitted to accidentally kissing Will Byers, a little, so maybe that’s an entirely fruitless road to go down.
Listen. No one should ever let Mike make decisions right after he wakes up from a nap, okay? Especially not decisions where Will is concerned. This is so not his fault.
