Maybe she needs space. So Fatin sets down her phone and waits.

In some sick, twisted way, the grime under her nails and the smokey scent of campfire clinging to her hair reminds her of the better parts of the Island. The parts that she clasps close to her chest. Moments aside from the fear of death, the constant state of survival, survival, survival. Eight bodies draped over one another around crackling flames. Pot gummies loosening their tongues and inhibitions. Laughing and playing chicken in the ocean. That moment during sunset where escaping sunlight hits dark skin at just the right angle, making it glow with hues of orange, pink, and red. The urge to press her mouth firmly against a certain thin-lipped smirk.

Richie Tozier, the Trashmouth himself, wannabe comedian, marine enlistee, CEO of terrible your-mom jokes, was finally good at something. This weedy little kid with his trademark curls shaved clean away and a military issue rifle still in his newly calloused hands had just killed four men at long range without blinking. And as their blood stained the sand, the blood of men with families, men who, despite their malicious cause, were still only men, Richie found his place in the world was clear. He was destined to be the man behind the scope, murder in his hands, a puppet on a string. It wasn’t the life he had imagined, not bright lights and laughs from an audience, but it was a life nonetheless.

Summary
Dorothy Campbell doesn't know who she is. She never got the chance to properly grieve her best friend and only family before being shipped away to an island and constantly trying to survive 'til morning, so how the fuck does she figure out how to live now? When she drops off the face of the earth after returning to Texas, intent on figuring that the fuck out, she doesn't think she'll be missed. She's very wrong.
Fatin Jamandi is fucked up enough. Her parents are still fighting, maybe worse than ever. She was stranded on an island for a while, almost dying SEVERAL times. She can't sleep, and yet never wants to get out of bed. And now the girl she's in love with has disappeared, whether by choice or not unclear. How could her life possibly get worse?
Leah Rilke is there to pick up the pieces for her best friend as she pines and falls apart. And maybe she's in love with said friend. But it isn't about her, it's about Fatin, and so she shoves it down and survives. Except maybe she's really angry.

Summary
So busy badly sneaking bites of cheesy potato off of Joel’s plate (after he’d already offered them up wholesale, not understanding that theft makes them tastier), she largely tunes out what Tommy and two of the other lead patrollers are discussing. Training patrols don’t start until 16, and no amount of whining, threats, or attempts at sneaking into groups has borne fruit to change that, so it’s not like it’s immediately relevant to her since she already knows all of Joel’s routes before he goes on them.
And then one of the women says “Silver Lake” and it’s like all of the air has been sucked out of the room.
