Lyra had chosen the book quickly, not because she didn’t care about that evening’s story, but because she loved to lie in Mother’s blankets and watch as Mother rubbed away her layers of paint and metal; as she revealed the woman who was only Lyra’s mother beneath. Then came the silk pajamas, the lavender pillow mist, the twin mugs of hot chocolatl. The story, read aloud in French, their secret language in the heart of London. The forgotten prayer, even though both Lyra’s schoolteachers and their priest said that praying before rest was a necessity. The lights turned out, Mother’s arms opened, Pantalaimon and Mother’s dæmon sitting sentinel at their feet. Mother’s arms were Lyra’s favourite place to sleep in all the world; as a young girl, she’d hoped that she’d always be allowed to snooze in that warm, safe embrace, the smell of Mother’s potions and perfumes perfusing her dreams forever.
Such was the way of Lyra Coulter’s little life. (Marisa raises Lyra herself.)

Summary
Lachlan Pucey joins the Montreal Metros as a rookie with all eyes on him. After a year spent in the AHL, developing and preparing for his NHL debut, he's not going to let anything distract him from playing the best hockey he can and proving to everyone watching that he's just as good of a player as his old man was and his big brother is.
Hank Crawford is a second round draft pick that comes into the league after two years playing the college circuit. He's got no one's expectations to live up to save for his own, but there's a lot riding on him making a name for himself in Montreal. It's the best day of his life when Shane Hollander calls to invite him to training camp in September, bar none.
Lachlan and Crawford are fast friends. Hard not to be when they have so much in common, when it's so easy to kill an afternoon hanging out and playing video games beside each other on the couch. When it starts to feel like the only deep breaths they're able to take are the ones they take when they're side by side, on the ice or at home or out in the city.
They're fast friends. Good friends. Best friends. That's all they can be; hockey is everything else.

Shane and Ilya had mutually agreed to keep their whatever-they’re-doing out of Sochi. It was an easy decision to make: this was bigger than any MLH rivalry and definitely bigger than a few hotel hook-ups. There was no room for distractions, not with Olympic gold on the line.
So it’d be really fucking great if their daemons could get on the same page and stop trying to cause an international fucking incident.
