Sober, those words haunted Lenny because they didn't just mean that Arthur hadn't found someone, nor did they mean Arthur wasn't interested. It meant he’d wanted it. It meant he’d tried. And it meant that he'd been hurt so much, by so many, that he’d given up. And that... that was painful.
There's a kind of pride men have, especially outlaws like themselves; they don't really open up about those things – they especially don't open up about those things with people younger than themselves, which is exactly why Lenny had no ability to pry after the fact.
And there's a burden that comes with knowledge. There's a burden that comes with knowing things. Seeing things.
Arthur’s biggest tragedy was the very thing Arthur couldn't see. But Lenny could. Lenny didn’t just see the way people treated him, he saw the way people treated everyone. He saw the way people treated Arthur. And he saw the way people looked at Arthur. One person in particular looked at Arthur too often, too intently – at least too intently for a "brother."

Hosea’s sigh was barely audible. "Dutch is…" he trailed off, like even he couldn’t find the right word.
Arthur spat behind them, watery red hitting the dirt. "Dutch is what?"
"Different," Hosea settled on, glancing ahead where the raven-haired man rode at the front, a king's relaxed posture, "lately."
Arthur sighed. "Ain’t we all," he dodged. But he knew. He knew Hosea was right. Something was off with Dutch. Had been for a while. They just didn't wanna voice it.
"Be careful, son."
"All I know is 'careful', Hosea. I'm not the one to be worryin' about."
"You need more red herb?" "Shut up," Arthur and John growled at the same time.
Sean blinked.
John barely spared the redhead a glance, his eyes locked on Arthur's tight shoulders. "You," John started, throat gravel, "You good?"
Arthur's jaw stiffened; a muscle jumped in his cheek. John had seen him look less tense staring down the barrel of a twelve-gauge. "Peachy," he warned.
The Frenchman emerged from the saloon, "Oh, he's perfect, non?" he purred, approaching Arthur's shoulder and perching his hand on it like a hawk. His fingers plucked at Arthur's lapel. "Don't you think, Dutch?"
Their leader stared silent for a moment, a pause that dragged on too long. "Depends," he decided, "on whether he's ready to do the job right."
Arthur's eyes drifted to the brick street, voice quiet and strange, devoid of his accent, normal slur, and everything that made him 'Arthur', "Of course, sir."
Dutch and some old associates have a new job lined up for the gang. Despite the fact that Arthur's never been first pick for a con, he's being asked to 'play prey'...
