(Stratt is the most mysterious occupant of their four-units complex. She’s Dutch and looks a few years older than him, but it’s hard to tell since she’s always sporting an impressive scowl, as if she was always in a hurry and irritated at people getting in her way. During the four years that he’s lived here, they’ve exchanged maybe twenty words, fifteen of which were “Hello”.
Most of the time, like today, they don’t even say the words out loud, just give each other curt nods and go about their business.
However, as luck would have it, today is the day that his lighter suddenly refuses to work, and Ryland sighs and raises his eyes to the sky — well, the concrete ceiling — because there is one thing and one thing only that he knows about Stratt, and that is that she smokes like a chimney.)

“Well, I’m not up for driving eight hours to Los Angeles, where we might get a chance to catch a commercial flight,” Grace replied in a clipped tone. “But I don’t want to stay here either. Let’s go to my flat.”
Stratt stared at him.
“What?”
“My flat, Stratt,” he replied impatiently. “Listen, our choice is to stay here, sit on the floor and catch so many different strains of bacteria that Lamai will make us the subject of her third PhD, or we can go to my flat, shower like humans and get some sleep. I’ll let you take the bed. Do you seriously see a third option?”) -

Summary
When a heavy storm hits the ship, Grace and Stratt find themselves forced into close proximity and repressed feelings accidentally come to the surface.
This changes some things, and spans over thirty years.—
(June; Ryland and Dr Lokken are flown to remote Alaska to participate in preliminary engine testing using astrophage fuel; they spend two weeks in the wilderness, evading bears and trying not to get into shouting matches in front of everyone. Rasmussen installs the improved and approved o-rings. Ryland discovers that he misses falling asleep with Eva in his bed. The first round of testing is successful; the night he returns to the ship, he and Eva fuck three times and end up talking instead of sleeping, anyway. She tells him that she missed him. He thinks that he might love her.)
(In July they nuke Antarctica. It’s hard to top that one.)

There’s a general store and a diner and a beauty shop, there’s a bar that’s only open on the weekends, and a town hall that’s old and sagging, with park benches in the main room.
