Ilya doesn't know why Shane's making such a big deal of this, honestly.
An ode to that one line from The Long Game where Ilya references his first time. Featuring grief, mommy issues, and trying to talk about your feelings but giving up and fucking about it anyway.

But Ilya shakes his head, absolutely mute. There’s no universe, no universe where he can talk about this. He moved to America to forget.

Summary
And yeah, Shane knew that Ilya hadn’t been okay last time he was in Russia, but Ilya had had the very real excuse of a funeral to blame things on. Ilya had downplayed it as much as he could, and Shane hadn’t been there; he’d heard the fatigue and he’d seen Ilya’s tired smile, but he hadn’t felt the way Ilya’s hands were cold the entire time he was there, hadn’t seen through the screen the way Ilya dropped eight pounds in three weeks, hadn’t kept time when there were twenty hours in Ilya’s day instead of something closer to sixteen. Or, on the flip side, for the week or two after, when there had been approximately ten conscious hours in a day.
It was one thing to see something. It was another to feel it in your hands.
Ilya and Shane are so, so happy for their first year married. They’re playing in Ottawa together, they’re fucking winning, they’re together and out.
So now, after a year, Ilya should be fine. He should be great. He should not be flinching at small noises or nearly punching people off the clock or feeling like he’s drowning whenever he’s not on the ice.
Or: Ilya Rozanov, meet your PTSD.

Summary
Afterwards, Hollander lays his head on Ilya’s chest like he has every intention of staying there. Hope has Ilya’s heart beating in his throat. Hollander must hear the elevated pulse.
“I told Hayden I might not be back until morning.” The way Hollander says it makes it sound like a challenge.
Ilya doesn’t want to talk about Hayden Pike in his bed. He is also going slack with relief.
Hollander is not trying to leave. Ilya can keep him for a little longer.

"No," Hayden says finally. "Sorry. I don't get it."

There’s a sign in front of Shane. It says Welcome to Scott Hunter and Kip Grady’s Happily Ever After in a cursive font that makes Shane think of Etsy. Shane’s stomach churns. He briefly squeezes his empty ring finger. He feels, all at once, like he might cry. Instead, he swallows, and breathes, and pastes a smile on his face, and marches his ass down to Scott and Kip’s fucking wedding of the century.

Summary
Ilya is not going to do anything. He knows this. He's also standing very still.
He thinks about his mother's arm, hanging over the side of the bed. He was twelve. He'd thought she was sleeping.
He closes the cabinet.
The face in the mirror is someone he recognizes in the way you recognize a city you lived in as a child: the basic geography is familiar, but you can't find anything you're looking for.

Or: A closer look at Ilya’s first year in Ottawa, set against his first in Boston—featuring a long-lost answering machine he claimed he’d never listen to, the family inevitably left behind when you move, and the mostly self-imposed pressure of loving a man as large and looming as the great Shane Hollander.

Summary
In 2008, Shane Hollander lost to Ilya Rozanov. Fresh-faced, hungry. Like he’d been living off victory points that were scraps compared to the real thing, compared to beating Rozanov, the first man in the world to make him feel second-best. Back then, he’d thought that was the only thing he felt, too. That the electric pulse jostling between them in the gym some time later was a trick of the mind. It was like seeing sky above for the first time. See you at the draft. Life in that paper body.
