It's a classic plan -- if Sokka and Zuko aren't married by the time they both turn thirty, they'll marry each other. It's one of Sokka's best plans, even if it's only meant to be a back-up.

holy shit this is like. one of the best, most thought provoking fics i've ever read in my life. explores post-colonialism with a lot of care, has a wonderful establishment of different cultures, complex and realistic characters?!? ough its incredible. minor trans character who is a full person outside of her transness and is respected by everyone in the story (besides difficulties with her family). just fucking incredible world-building and themes ! and i absolutely loved and adored the exploration of zuko's queerness !!!! it felt very affirming as an ace-spec person to read <3333 there was so many different areas that were touched on and explored and it was so so fascinating. i fucking love fics like this oh my god. need a printed copy of this so bad

Sokka isn’t stupid. Not that his sister is, mind you (at least, he’d never call her that to her face now that she’s honed her waterbending), or any of the rest of Team Avatar, although sometimes it feels like he’s living in a different world from the rest of them — a world where running out of food means starving, and walking into a town full of firebenders with the Avatar in tow will get you killed, rather than help you free a beaten-down Earthbender colony.
Anyways.
Sokka isn’t stupid, which is why he laughs directly in Aunt Wu’s face when she tells him that he will marry the Fire Lord.

Zuko is courting Katara, and with every passing day finds new and insane ways of showing that he would quite literally move the spirit world and earth to make her happy.
In hindsight, it probably would've been better if Sokka had realised he was in love with Zuko at literally any time before this. Or preferably, never fallen for his best friend in the first place.
