Fresh off four blissful, sun-soaked weeks of nothing but lazing around in various states of undress across assorted boats, beds, and beaches, Shane and Ilya are back from their honeymoon and ready to finally start their new life together. They’d won their happy ending, fair and square, and nothing can take the joy out of that.
Not even the tedium of unpacking the dozens of boxes that had been shipped over from Shane’s house in Montreal.
Or so Shane thought.
The joy is still there. But it also turns out that happy endings might be a little more complicated than Shane believed they were.
Or: The one where the Shane finally confronts some things he didn’t realize he had buried and the boxes aren’t the only things that get unpacked. Six boxes that lead to six moments of healing.

Summary
Ilya knows that no one loves the same version of a person; his Shane is different to Yuna’s Shane, who is different to David’s Shane, who is different to J.J., or Rose, or Hayden’s Shane. And while Ilya knows he’d fall in love with every single version, he’s happy he gets this one. Happy he gets the Shane who lets himself be trusting, and vulnerable, and honest.
It makes Ilya wish he could have loved Shane earlier - makes him wish he could have known him longer. But he’s just glad he gets to do it now, here, like this.
(Or, four times people are surprised by Shane’s clinginess, and one time they completely expect it.)

Shane wants to figure out if he's gay before he gets drafted—and no, the way he felt when Ilya Rozanov smirked at him with a cigarette between his lips in Saskatchewan has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, the random guy he hooks up with to try and make sure one way or another takes a picture, and Shane gets outed before the draft. In the ensuing scandal, he goes seventh overall, to Ottawa.
It turns out, having the worst thing you can think of happen to you when you're seventeen years old can end up being pretty liberating. And land you an unexpected best friend.

Ilya guides them to shift their weight in time with the music. Shane remembers trying to dance with Rose this way. He'd made a valiant attempt, to be sure, but dancing with Ilya now makes it very clear that it was only an attempt, like everything else with her had been. This easy push and pull between him and Ilya, the way Shane lets himself be guided by the gentle pressure on his waist, the way Ilya half-sings the song in a voice meant just for him—this is the real thing, or at least a glimpse of it. He knows there can be more. He wants all of it.
"Fun, yes?" Ilya prompts, never one to let Shane hide his enjoyment.

She is looking at her like that now, hands clasped tightly over the obi of her hakama, but Moroha doesn't need her eyes to see the obvious tension, not when she can smell her mother's sweat, not when she can hear the dry swallow of her throat, the way Kagome's heartbeat is ratcheting up the more she looks and looks and breathes like she is about to say something, that little hitch in breath that usually is a precursor to speech.
