Summary
Pancakes were easy to make. Pancakes were an old favorite, something that was just similar enough in ingredient list (flour; sugar; eggs; milk) to donuts that it was Vash’s God-given right to learn how to make ‘em. No leavening agent made them a faster throw-together dessert, but that didn’t mean they didn’t require patience and a skilled hand. One could easily fuck up pancakes as easily as one could, say, blow a giant hole in the moon. He’d made many-a burnt circle of ash in his time as a sometimes-useless baker and most of those weren’t even his fault. You try making a perfect pancake while in an active shootout. You try attending to that sensitive little bubble of dough while dodging your own customers rallying for your head on a sixty-billion double-dollar pike. Vash might’ve been a free man, now, but he was not taking any chances with something being made for someone as special as Milly Thompson.

When Meryl and Milly were interviewing her about the ongoing Noman recovery efforts, the topic of the Humanoid Typhoon had come up—and as smoothly as any other slimy, skilled politician constantly bathing in the public’s critical eye, Luida had hummed thoughtfully to herself, before lying straight through her teeth.
“Oh, Vash the Stampede?” Luida had said, never missing a beat. “Ahh. Yes. After everything, I heard he went bald from the stress. When do you suppose they’ll update his bounty poster?”
—And then she’d winked when Milly’s giggles made the camera move off of her face, and Meryl had smiled like she’d just found a nugget of pure gold in a pile of tomas shit.

A comfortable silence falls. Vash watches Wolfwood knit and savors the little things. Wolfwood has settled so much that he’s now on the cusp of dozing off: his eyes are half-lidded. He’s been lulled into contentment with his hands busy and his head blank and his heart soothed by Vash’s company. They have nowhere to be. Nothing to do save rest and recuperate from yesterday; and Vash had affirmed with their little back-and-forth that he wanted Wolfwood happy and healthy and that he’d be delighted to see Wolfwood dolled up as pretty as he wanted to be.
Vash starts massaging around Wolfwood’s left knee as he contemplates his spouse, and Wolfwood moans (actually moans!) and lets his knitting drop as his eyes completely close. “Wow, that good?” Vash teases; Wolfwood huffs at Vash’s tone but nods. His black hair fans against the black leather of their couch. His eyelids flutter. God, he’s pretty. He’s so pretty like this: when he’s soft and honest to himself and Vash about what he wants.
Wolfwood has some crummy feelings about being waiter-assigned-top. Vash goes down on his wife about it.

Maybe Wolfwood is a little pent up.
Maybe he usually is, of course. But especially now. He’ll never be able to figure out how Vash can dodge and talk his way through a gun fight just to fall asleep in the car next to him moments later. Wolfwood still feels like he's in fight or flight mode, every bump of the trip jolting him to full attention even when he tries to sink into his seat.

“I’m sorry, Madame Mary Magdalene,” Dominique croaked. Her eye trembled. She and Elendira weren’t close; why was she here? She was supposed to escape. She was supposed to be dead.
Elendira scoffed, shook her head, and left the room. Disappointed.

On Wednesday, Vash realizes that Wolfwood is getting sick and promptly pretends that he hadn’t noticed.
It’s his food, is what gives it away. As a rule of thumb, Wolfwood likes spicy things, sour things, and flavors strong enough to clear Vash’s sinuses; so when Vash notices the smallish pot simmering on the stove Wednesday night, he’s careful to keep his tone just curious (not assessing: Wolfwood will know that Vash knows if Vash is assessing) when he asks, “Is that congee for me?”
Wolfwood visibly starts where he’d been zoning out next to the stove. There’s a crease between his eyebrows when he wheels to face Vash. “Y’said y’wanted bread,” Wolfwood tells him like that answers Vash’s question; in a way (in the way of the shared language of their relationship) it does. Vash had said he’d wanted bread; and the congee is very obviously not bread; so the contents of the pot merrily bubbling away on the stove aren’t for Vash.
Which means they’re for Wolfwood. And Wolfwood never wants plain congee unless he’s feeling bad.
Wolfwood gets sick, and Vash does what he can about it.

"Naw, I have a pretty good idea, actually," Midvalley argues, leaning in so close that it makes Wolfwood's stomach flip. "There's a sheep behind those eyes, Chapel. You don a wolf's pelt to make yourself look bigger, scarier, meaner. You can't seriously believe your disguise will save you, do you?" His eyes go from half-lidded to wildly wide as he speaks, and his eye contact in general is way too intense.
New hired-gun coworkers, Nicholas D. Wolfwood and Midvalley the Hornfreak, get to know each other through a cautious dance, executed as intricately as a mating ritual.

Nick Wolfwood is the new director of Conrad-Chapel Funeral Home in May City, located across the street from Saverem Greenhouse & Landscaping. Over time, the owner, Vash, gets to know Nick and introduces him to the rest of the neighborhood, including local busybodies and married feminist bookshop owners Meryl and Milly. Vash and Nick are inexorably drawn to each other until they have to start admitting their feelings.
But Vash's brother, co-owner of the garden center, hasn't left his past as far behind as the twins had hoped when they started their lives over in May.
