Except she had. She lied. Even now she was lying - to Serena. Who seemed genuinely nice and interested in being her friend.
“Small mercies,” she’d said before fleeing back to her ward - but there would be no mercy the moment Marcus found out. And what about Serena? She’d like them to be friends. Should she continue the subterfuge - or own up to everything that happened, taking the risk of ruining their friendship right at the start.

Bernie Wolfe arrives at Holby Community School to cover history teaching for one term. Serena Campbell has been Head of Music for as long as many members of staff can remember. If, when they first met on the playground one chilly January morning, someone had told them that by the end of the term they would be the best of friends they might have been a little surprised. If someone had told them that by the end of the school year Bernie would be an integral member of Serena’s department they certainly would. “Oh, Spain,” Serena had replied, fixated still on the broken, familiar skin against hers, but the offhand answer surprised a laugh out of Bernie that startled Serena. When Bernie was brought on as head of the science department at St. Winifred’s secondary school, she and Serena inevitably butted heads. As deputy headteacher, and one of the longest standing faculty in the department, Serena didn’t take kindly to Bernie pushing in on her territory. Some of their early rows were the stuff of legend among the other faculty.
Despite all that, they came to understand one another, and eventually became the closest of friends. Bernie treasures the time they spend together, their friendship one of the most important she’s ever had in her life.
