Summary
He becomes aware of his hands flexing in the air with the effort not to touch her. She notices as well, shifting with a small, watery sound. And he looks down just as she looks up at him and she's goddamn adorable. She has a nose that deserves to be kissed.
“What's wrong?” she asks him, and it's so absurd how big her heart is, he just wants to laugh. It must show on his face, because she peels herself from him, shrinking. “I'm sorry. I'm freaking you out.”
“You're not.”
“I'm sorry,” she says anyway.
He misses her already. “Stop that.”

Summary
There was no reason for him to intervene. They didn’t know each other. Not in any meaningful way. A brief exchange in a stairwell did not justify involvement. She might not even remember him. From her perspective, he would be a stranger—a large, older man in a car pulling up unprompted in the dark, in the rain. There were variables there he couldn’t control. Unknowns in how she would react, how she would interpret it.
He didn’t like unknowns.
He also didn’t like the image of her standing there, soaked through, waiting in the rain.
The irritation came quickly—not at her, but at the situation. At himself.
“Fuck,” he said under his breath.
He signaled left.

Summary
“So ditch him,” comes out of his mouth before any critical thinking takes place. He holds out his hand. “Have dinner with me.”
“What?” Emma’s eyes widen. “That’s okay, I’m—I can take the bus back home.”
It’s clear from her tone she thinks the offer is just because her date stood her up and he feels bad. A miscommunication that must be rectified as soon as possible. Brendon doesn’t like being misunderstood.
He lets himself look her over, take in her bare legs, her short dress, the way the straps drape over her collarbones. “Dressed like that? No you can’t.” Impatiently, he reasserts that she should take his hand.
“Really,” she pleads, eyes wide and shining with emotion, “just go home. I’m fine.”
“I know you are.” That’s not the point.
It gives her pause. Two little lines appear between her eyebrows, adorably furrowed in confusion. “I—you what?”
He softens. “I know you’re okay. I’m asking you to dinner because I want to take you to dinner.”

Summary
Tommy is on his back, dark sunglasses on, basking in the heat like a cat. Buck thinks he might actually be asleep. The rise and fall of his chest is so even, so regular. His ever-moving fingers are calm and still. He looks peaceful. There’s something so casually domestic about this, just laying side by side in the backyard with no plans, warm and indulgent in the sun, like they have all the time in the world to just be together.
And Buck loves that. He really, deeply loves it; feels lucky beyond words to have a partner who wants this with him, who will give it to him. But he’s also… well, bored. That’s not a reflection on Tommy or on their relationship. Buck has just never been good at sitting still.
