The scrape of a chair startles Bradley, and he looks up just as some guy drags a chair over to their table and takes a seat right next to Haley. She tips her head toward him. “This is my roommate’s brother. My backup.”
“In case you decide to be an asshole about this whole thing,” the guy says. His sprawl is casual, but his eyes are sharp as they rove over Bradley. His hackles are up for sure—one wrong move, and Bradley’s probably getting frog-marched out of here.
“It’s fine, Jake,” Haley says. “I told you, Bradley’s a nice guy.”
The guy—Jake—rolls his eyes. “Well, excuse me if I don’t have a lot of faith in some asshole who fucked you and then didn’t call.”
Bradley leans forward, his eyes narrowing. What the hell, where does this guy get off pretending like he knows anything about this situation?

“Do you want to pop the question now or later, then?” Jake calls from where he’s apparently stopped in the kitchen.
And, really, there’s nothing about the statement that strikes Bradley. Jake poses the question so naturally, so casually, like he’s asking if his boyfriend is jonesing for Chinese or Thai. Maybe that’s why Bradley just calls back “tonight,” happily, mindlessly, a soft grin splitting his face in two.
