“It’s dark. Nobody cares.”
Everybody cares, though. The whole world has been watching them, analyzing every interaction through a lens they can’t control. Samira knows she’s complicit in the crime; doesn’t hold her husband’s hand enough in public or discuss his domestic habits in interviews to justify the perpetual blush on her cheeks when Jack has her accompany him on official visits.

Summary
Jack nods, “Good,” then enters the elevator. At the last second, he turns to stop the doors from closing to find her again, “Samira?” he calls out into the hallway. He steps one foot out of the elevator, and looks around hoping to see her. But she’s gone.
He steps back into the elevator, and lets the doors close. Samira. He lets out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding this whole time, and steadies himself against the wall. The weight he’s been carrying falls away, the comfort he’s been seeking nestles into his chest, a gift from Samira. Jack Abbot smiles to himself, and does something he’s never done outright before- he prays. He prays for a chance to see Samira again.
Samira touches a hand to the elevator door, hearing his wish and hoping for the same thing.

Summary
Jack has and will do anything for Samira Mohan. Has written her letters of recommendation for fellowships, and moved her permanently to the night shift to help boost her confidence after the hit it took that Fourth of July shift.
