But having to say goodbye, gosh, I’ve never been good at that.” Grace laughs, but it sounds sad. His mouth is shut firmly, and he leans against my ball. He’s so soft, his body melds to the side of the xenonite with ease. “I can’t imagine what a mess I’ll be when—” he cuts himself off, but I know what was coming next.
I’m not sure how I’ll be when we say goodbye either. It didn’t seem like it’d matter so much at first, after all, if we part ways, it means we succeeded. I’d be going back to Erid, to Adrian, to home. But I’d be leaving behind Grace. The thought of that is unpleasant. It sinks deep in me; the emotion is painfully familiar. It’s been a long time since I’ve had anyone to mourn losing anyone again. I don’t want to think about it, I’m not ready.

Summary
Sometimes you read a fic that alters you brain chemistry and lives in your head rent free. "Putting The Commander to Bed" by Judin is one of those fics for me. I've wanted to illustrate something for it ever since I first read it, but I could never settle on what scene to draw. My solution to this issue has been starting a project to do a colored sketch of a scene from each chapter.
Please enjoy my sketchy renditions of the epic highs and lows of: Vimes figuring out he's a Sub, Sybil figuring out she's a Dom, and Vetinari figuring out he has more capacity for love and hope than he realized. Other subjects depicted may include 'orrible murder, spooky mystery, and cheery littlebottom's unfortunate mancrush. But is he telling the full truth? And are there things that he's leaving out?
(I'm taking the interpretation that Tolkien's 'translation; of the Red Book of Westmarch was only a translation of one of various copies made of the book throughout the centuries, and that I am 'translating' a different version of the text with the help of different primary sources! Which is why our descriptions of the events may differ.)
