    Summary

The figure that steps into the airlock is one Satoru recognizes by the way his hips move in mag boots and how his gloved fingers stretch as he feels along the wall.

It’s the man he’s spent almost every day of the last ten years with. The one he’s kissed every which way—even upside down with the gravity off. They’ve ventured places only a handful of humans have ever gone. They’ve thrived together in the kind of isolation that fries others’ brains. They know each other better than most people know themselves.

Closer now, and the front of that EVA helmet still reveals nothing; the place where a face should be is obscured by a sea of floating black hair.

    “Suguru?”

Satoru and Suguru—best friends of more than a decade and soon-to-be-married, if Satoru gets his way—are the lone occupants of an orbital research station some hundred thousand light years from Earth.

But they’re not as alone as they think.

    Summary

They speak of a kitsune that has long since fallen from favor.
It need not touch flesh to devour.
    It only needs to speak.
For the sound of one’s name through that bloodied maw thieves time. Some say days; others warn of years. Lifelines eroded with syllables.
The more you fear, the more it takes.
Until the only thing left to bear your name is a headstone.

OR: Suguru is a cursed kitsune. Ancient, enlightened, and burdened with more memories than any one soul was intended to keep.

Satoru is warned not to give the fox his name. He does. It’s only a matter of time before he surrenders his heart, too.

As their time together accumulates, Satoru finds himself asking questions no legend ever bothered to answer: is grief another name for love? And if so, why does Suguru choose it twice?

    Summary

Suguru begins to wonder if it’s lonely for Gojo. Keeping an inch between him and the world.

Not an inch, a voice that sounds suspiciously like Shoko reminds him. Infinity.

But does it feel like infinity? When summer’s humidity swells to its peak, can Gojo feel the pressure? When a barrage of low-level curses ambushes them in Roppongi, can he sense their velocity, the twist of the wind? When Suguru grazes the immovable space between them – hands him a test paper, shoulders past him in the corridor, reaches out, unthinking, to slap him on the back – does Gojo know the warmth of Suguru's skin?

Then, on July 12th, in a sour-smelling alley in Katsushika ward, Suguru catches him. Hunched over, spindly legs crouched, a street-worn cat pressing her nose to his fingertips. It licks her sandpaper tongue over his knuckles. Rubs the flat of her forehead against his palm. Gojo hums, pushing a tangled cowlick back with his thumb, a serene little smile on his face.

Yes, Suguru thinks. It must be lonely.

(Trauma is complicated, brains are strange, and Satoru Gojo is not immune to either of these truths.)

    Summary

As a PhD in Physics, Satoru Gojo had pictured a crisp, easy career path for himself: CERN, Non-Perturbative Structure of Infinities research, Oxford, papers in journals.
Instead, he accepts a job he’s either underqualified—or absurdly overqualified—for at a shadowy Global Intelligence Agency™. He’s brilliant at it, but brilliance doesn’t shield him from the kind of suffering no textbook ever covered: life.

or: the one where satoru works for the government (multiple governments?), at a surveillance capitalist meta-analytic authority that treats his brain like a storage drive—but he doesn’t care, because a ripped, heavily tattooed suguru geto is his boss.

    Summary

Shoko lights his cigarette first, then hers. They each take a drag and sigh.

    “Holding up okay?”

“Oh, you know how it is when your best friend-slash-crush murders your estranged parents and takes off into the night without so much as a backward glance.” Suguru shrugs, having since settled into the strange new normal of a life devoid of Satoru.

“Oh, so now you’ll admit you were crushing on him,” Shoko complains.

In which Satoru Gojo defects instead.
