    Caitlyn wished she knew how red her face was, and if it was noticeable. It seemed, at the very least, Vi remained oblivious.

    “I’m gonna get changed then,” Vi said, slinging the blouse over one shoulder and sliding into it fully, before beginning to do up the buttons. “Oh, you know,” she paused. “I just realized something.”

    “What?”

    “CK is also your initials,” Vi grinned. “This whole time, I’ve been wearing you.”

    Caitlyn’s heart sprang into a gallop again. She didn’t even reply—what could she possibly say to something like that?

    “— No,” Caitlyn says, cutting Vi off. “I — I came here for the artifact. I know it’s here. It’s… It’s down there,” she says pointing down toward the abyss where the elevator leads.

    Vi sighs, “Look, Caitlyn, you need —”

    “— What I need is for all of this to mean something,” Caitlyn interrupts, again, gesturing to the dead bodies scattered around them.

    Fine. Vi gets it. She really, really does. She’s been there before. When she made her first kill, she was overwhelmed with guilt. She searched for a reason for it — begged the gods to give it meaning.

    Vi wanted to kill them. All of them. Wanted to go back inside and paint the walls red for daring to touch her, to frighten her, to make her feel small and powerless and alone.
    Instead, she reached up and cupped Caitlyn's face in her hands.
    Caitlyn's breath caught. Her eyes finally lifted to Vi's, wide and wet in the moonlight.
    "I'm sorry," Vi said quietly. "I should not have left you alone. Dat was my fault. It will not happen again."
    "It wasn't—you couldn't have known—"
    "I should have known." Vi's thumbs brushed across Caitlyn's cheekbones, wiping away tears that hadn't quite fallen yet. "You are not a t'rall. You are not property. You are—"
    She stopped. The words caught in her throat, too big, too frightening to speak aloud.
    Mine. You are mine. Not because I own you. Because I would burn de world down before I let anyone hurt you.
    "—safe," she finished instead. "You are safe. I will keep you safe. I swear it. I promised."
