The words stunned him. The confession was strange, unexpected and disarming. He could feel Valery’s hands freeze in place. The younger man did not look at him. He seemed to pull into himself, bracing for judgment. In the Soviet Union, one wrong confession to the wrong person could end a man’s life, free and direct trip to a psychological unit.
The name Mykola rose in Boris’s throat. A simple answer. A quiet “me too.” But he could not say it. Years of fear pushed the words back down.
