Summary
Sometimes, when Rocky is sleeping, Grace can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Rocky hadn’t been here. It’s not a fun reality to ponder. While part of him gives a weak assurance that he would have figured something out, he knows that isn’t true. Because Rocky is his reason to figure something out.
Then his mind flips the script. What if Grace had never shown up? Rocky would have been out here, alone. A single Eridian on a big ship, with no one to watch him sleep.
And just when he’s about to sooth his mind with the fact that neither of those things came to pass, a new scenario sprouts unbidden from his mind. What if someone else arrives after Rocky and him leave?
What if they get here, and they’re all alone.

Ryland wilts in the makeshift nest and blows out a long sigh. “Look, it's not that I'm ideologically against it or anything, Rock. It's just that—nothing has ever.” He abruptly pauses, wrinkling his nose to reconfigure his thought pattern while he stares at the ceiling of the ship and makes a vague hand gesture through the air. His blood capillaries are still dilated but not as obscenely as before. “Nobody has ever…y’know? Gosh, why is it so hard to talk about this right now?”
Simultaneous surprise and arousal hit Rocky like twin bolts of frenetic lightning. He would almost break out into joyous song if that didn’t feel slightly inappropriate in light of Grace’s burning bashfulness. “Oh, Rocky understand now,” he gently cuts in. “Grace is a virgin.”

In a misguided attempt to quell Ryland Grace’s loneliness by wingmanning him across the galaxy and into the five arms of some theoretical Eridian babe, Rocky might accidentally kind of realize that he really doesn’t want that to happen at all. At least, not with just any nonspecific theoretical Eridian babe. More like one very specific extant Eridian babe.
aka: the “split or swallow” AU that no one asked for, ft. Eridian Sex Ed 301, 303, and 305H, taught by one Rocky to a single, starry-eyed human student.
