    Summary

Somehow, Matt has become an adult before Jay. He goes on runs, lifts, cooks at home, reads, takes more than 2 showers a week, goes out on the weekends, does his laundry consistently. It drives Jay crazy. It's not fair. He goes back to sleep, pulling the covers over his head, hoping that maybe he'll disappear.

"I think I feel anger differently than other people," Matt says distantly, "there's no way it's like this for everyone." Before Jay can respond Matt's pulling the stop request cord, and hauling Jay to his feet.

Jay sits on the porch of their house, staring blankly into the distance.

"Bird, c'mon" Matt says, defeated, exhausted.
"No" Jay says, his forehead pressed against his knees, "we're going to go inside and we're going to fight, and it's going to be our last one ever and we won't be friends anymore."
Matt looks at him like he's stupid, pity mixed with genuine fondness.
"It's not going to be our last one," he says quietly. He puts his hand on Jay's shoulder, shakes him a little. "Come fight with me." It sounds unbearably romantic.

    Summary

Jay can't dodge this one. Mrs. Johnson is turning seventy-five and she wants her entire family to spend half of December together. They've rented two massive cottages in a fancy winter resort four hours north of Toronto. Maybe, maybe, if he and Matt weren't getting married, he could duck out of it. Maybe if fifty thousand dollars weren't being dangled above their heads, he could whine and mope his way free.

    But Matt wouldn't hear it.

    "You're going," he said.

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Like all things, Matt softened over time. Matt, whether he wanted it to be so or not, would do anything for Jay, would love Jay to pieces no matter who he was or what he did, and he took pity on him. As the very nature of their relationship, the very object of MattandJay blurred at the edges and became fuzzy with ambiguity and the fear of losing Jay became more and more tangible, it became clear to Matt that all he needed to do was take care of him, do all the thinking, all the work, all the leaving home for him. That’s all."

    Summary

Two key truths had remained constant for Jay McCarrol since his childhood: one, Matt was always there; and two, Jay had no real sense of direction in his life.

On the rare occasions in which he had allowed himself to reflect on it, Jay had always ended up reaching the same conclusion: a change in number one must be the key to changing number two.

After experiencing a timeline without Matt at his side and making the decision to go back to set things right, though, Jay realizes how much he values the life that they have together, and it finally occurs to him that maybe the purpose that he’s been searching for his whole life has been right there in front of him the entire time.

Or, Jay decides to propose to Matt.

“Hey guys,” Jared says, handing them a cartoony storebought card that reads: FUCKING FINALLY. I MEAN, CONGRATULATIONS.
