Summary
The Mortal Anniversary; or A ghost made them do it.
For the second year in a row, on the anniversary of her death, I saw my wife waiting for me. Holmes had been returned from his sojourn to Europe for nearly a year, alive and whole though worse for wear; I had sold my practice and moved back into Baker Street; and we had begun an affair. It had been since the start of the year, and now I felt the weight of that decision like a millstone as I tried to ignore my dead wife’s presence. I didn’t regret it. Not for a moment. But I hadn’t expected to look her in the eye five minutes after I’d kissed him goodbye.
“I need to know you’re all right, John,” she said.
“I’m all right,” I said, and it was even true.
“I need to know you’re happy.”

Summary
Sometimes I am accused (by Holmes, mainly) of embellishing the romantic aspects of a tale to make for a more engaging story. Everybody wants the hero or heroine to be in love, don’t they? However, recently, more often than not I find myself downplaying this aspect of my stories—especially after an incident during a case that came to be published as The Case of the Blind Man’s Bluff. On that fateful and most memorable day, my bath was interrupted and I almost got myself arrested for threatening Inspector Lestrade with a golf club.
