These interviews with Daniel must have cracked something open in Lestat’s mind again—brought his nightmares back out into the open. Now he’s retreating to somewhere safer; somewhere before Magnus and the tower, before even the wolves it seems.
Lestat has a nightmare about his Turning and when he wakes, he forgets who Louis is. It's up to Louis to pick up the pieces.

“From the flight over,” Lestat said with a solemn nod, unscrewing the cap from his drink. “What do you say? We can get to know each other!”
Louis waved away the offered bottle.
“We just did that. We braved the hordes downstairs, we took the elevator together. I know your name, you know mine. It’s nice to meet you. There. All done.”
In late December 1973, Louis and Lestat meet at a history conference in San Francisco. They are drawn to each other, but Louis has hang-ups, and Lestat has a secret.

The blood on his body is dry and crusted, tracing paths like rivers climbing mountains, from his abdomen to his throat. It then splatters—like sparse, fervent, melting snow—across his face, up to the bridge of his nose.
Lestat flinches, then freezes.
His breath is so heavy it becomes audible, and then seems to turn into a serene sigh.
