Iruka lifted his head and met Hiruzen's eyes. "I've been thinking, since we returned. I know I can't continue field duty, so I looked into other positions around the village. I think...I think I want to become a teacher at the Academy."
Hiruzen was pleasantly surprised, taking another drag of his pipe and blowing out smoke. "That's an honorable position," he said. "I think that would be a good choice for you. You're good with children and a natural leader." He closed his eyes. "There is an issue, however."
Iruka blinked. "What is it, Sandaime-sama?"
Hiruzen shook his head. "It's a long withstanding tradition across the Fire Country, only members of prominent clans are allowed to become Academy instructors."
That...certainly presents itself as an issue.

Through stubbornness and what Kakashi calls a ‘dazzling display of heart,’ Iruka somehow befriends the CEO of Hatake Corp, Hatake himself. And no, despite what Iruka’s friends might think, Kakashi is not his sugar daddy. Kakashi is giving and selfless, and he’s Iruka’s friend, kind and reliable. Sure, he does constantly try to buy Iruka things, and he’s attentive, almost overwhelmingly so, but that’s just how he is: Kakashi is lonely. He’s not used to having friends.
Besides, their relationship is totally platonic. There's no sugaring. If anything—and this is a big if—he’d be something like a… Sugar Friend. Yeah, something adjacent to that.
Iruka is becoming increasingly unsure if that is actually true.

After his parents’ death they had gone away for a time; then they’d come back with a vengeance, and he had spent the whole year he was fifteen in a haze, not sure whether he was really Iruka or whether he was another, younger boy who skipped stones and laughed and still had a living father.
