“I feel like it’s somethin’ that should be covered in orientation. It’s an important part of our school’s history,” Mungojerrie stated, almost solemn. Rumpleteazer nodded in agreement next to him.
“It’s just a dumb legend, the administrators are tired of all the rumors,” Munkustrap interrupted, giving the siblings a pointed look.

Becoming a superhero had been an accident. Literally.
Lance wasn’t the type who had been born with his abilities, they weren’t gifted to him by a god or some weird genetic mutation, he hadn’t been tortured until his body went beyond the normal human expectation, and he hadn’t died and come back to life like some people had.
It’s estimated that about 6% percent of the population was a super of some sort. This was including abilities that didn’t seem that useful, like fire breathing or being able to levitate small objects. Then again, that had been an estimate taken back when understanding how someone was a super and why they were a super wasn’t really well known. Even now it still confused scientists. They couldn’t figure out the exact reason why some people developed abilities and others didn’t, for some it was genetic and for others there was no traceable cause. And most people didn’t report if they had abilities or not which made it hard to count how many supers there were.
Point being, Lance had a very, very, very, slim chance of having powers. Incredibly slim.

Ryland looked down at his clipboard, where he had written a reasonable script, supplied earlier that day by Adrian. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on the words, his brain supplied only terrible ways to say them.
He chose the worst one.
“I need flowers with prominent reproductive structures.”
The man went completely still.
Ryland could feel his soul attempting to leave his body.
“For a plant anatomy lab,” he added quickly. “For my students. Middle school students. Not–” He cut himself off, because there was simply no end to that sentence that would improve his situation. Instead, he just weakly smiled, and added “Science.”

Bucky does not waver, will not doubt. In his dreams, his hair falls to his shoulders, braided like a woman’s, and he feels his breath come more deeply than anything he takes while waking.
Helio’s light is that which bleaches the fields, which burns the unholy, which demands he stand as upright and exemplary as any paladin, that he not doubt. No matter that he has lied to his parents. No matter that Kristen was — nice to him, almost, even if her words were riddled with sin, even if she delighted in profanity, even if the twilight that suffused her was so cool it almost felt like relief. Even if she looked at Bucky like he was still just a kid, not almost the man of the house, not the eldest child now that — well. — like he was still growing, becoming, changing. No. Helio demanded that he stand tall, now, unwavering. Like one more corn stalk in that empty, holy field.

Bucky scrubbed at the tear tracks on his cheeks. "But you were the Chosen One."
"I know. I could talk to him. But he wasn't listening." Kristen took his hands back up in hers. "I died on the very first day of school. I believed in him and I thought he was good, and I went to Heaven and he wouldn't answer one question from me. I asked him and he turned around and left me there."[Helio abandons Bucky. Kristen doesn't.]
