"Fuck off," Shane says.
You nod. Figures. Turning, you start to walk away again when he says, "Sorry."
You stiffen, look at him. He's looking at you now, managed to tear his eyes away from the shelf.
"Sorry," he says again, with such an honesty to it. "Old habits."
Three years since you last spoke, the rumour around town is that Shane's sober now. When it proves to be true, and he wants to be friends, old wounds are reopened and old habits die hard.

Shane blinked blearily up at the vision of the mermaid. It had not moved an inch away as Shane had puked. In fact, it looked fascinated, leaning closer as if to get a better look at what had come out of him.
“Fuck off.” He muttered, sniffing. His eyes were wet.
“That is very disgusting.” It told him, not unkindly. The words jarred awkwardly with its curious tone, making Shane feel more dazed than he already was.
When Shane gets drunk one night, he decides to take a walk to the beach.
He expects a night of self imposed isolation, but he quickly finds that he is not alone.
