this is a story about that cold. about two girls who walked into it so young that they mistook it, for years, for the only weather there was. about how you can love someone entirely, uselessly, in a language that was never given the words to survive past the walls it was born inside.
lord, i no longer believe — not in medals, not in mercy, not in the arithmetic of a scoreboard deciding who gets to be loved out loud and who has to silence it, over and over, pressing it into a safe. i believe only in this: that it happened. that the love was real. that somewhere it is still happening, on a loop, forever, in the girls they used to be.

Will had started up with his sword, slashing wildly at the nearest boulder. Watching him made Clarisse wince. He was clearly undertrained. Even his grip on the sword's hilt wasn't completely correct. She started sidling down the tree as he hacked and slashed with no visible tact. This wasn't a carefully designed training exercise, where he imagined the boulder was an enemy and struck its weak points accordingly. No, this was something Clarisse knew very well: a blind, wild release of anger.
Some days, you had to just run off and stab something. A lot. It was Clarisse's favorite coping mechanism, and seeing Will participate in it gave Clarisse a grudging fondness for him. But the least he could do was hold the damn sword correctly.
